Metroids Are Jerks
Quote from LDreamNinja:
I suddenly remembered this: all of m2 was dark aside from the first room and the ending mountain climb, maybe the entracne cave had some light filtering down, but for the most part samus was looking through an ir scanner according to the manual.

Wow.  That makes my plea for visors to make a return even more convincing!  As well as this fine little tidbit about Samus's gunship:
Star Ship
This is Samus' elite custom scout ship designed to travel interstellar distances. Samus traveled to the planet SR388. This ship is her base of operations for this mission. [italics mine]
That's just a pray for the Ship Visor... but if she had the IR Visor all along, then what's with the pitch-black puzzle zones in that game?  They could just retcon the IR Visor out of it and just go with the Thermal Visor later in the game.

So, I just think that if it's remade, they should overhaul the beginning of the game.  They need to explain the absence of "Larvae Stage" Metroids on the surface (which should be keeping the X under control),  how Samus got the Morphball/30 Missiles and it would be a good idea if they made the Metroid Detector an item (you could click on it on the DS screen for info about certain Metroid Stages...).

I still like the idea of selecting/deselecting items on the touchscreen. You can probably even choose the visor through the item select screen.

I think it would also be nice to have the missiles on the touch screen.  And it would be cool to see the Ice Missiles make a comeback in M2, which would make the missile select on the touch screen more useful (since you'd be selecting between three missile types).

Oh dude, I just remembered a flash game that uses udlr keys to move and mouse to aim. You can do that using the stylus! L for missiles is fine, and you can easily flip your hand back to the buttons in morph ball mode. For charge beam you can just keep the stylus on the screen. Jump is obviously up. I'm not sure about the other buttons.

Perhaps the entire right half of the buttons (except start and select pretty much) can be remapped for various functions: you have missile selection, maybe visor selection (it's probably best to make them toggle instead of select), maybe you can charge a short thrust attack, I'm not sure if an Action button can ever be applied enough (but it's a possibility), and a button to chuck the Fonz at enemies. A run button probably isn't necessary, IMO. Morph ball of course has different actions and no real need of the stylus.

Metroids Are Jerks
EDIT:
Well, I was thinkin' more of a 2D version, rather than the MPH style.
...nevermind, I know what you're saying now.

I would rather keep the controls more traditional, Castlevania-esque style.  Keeping A = Jump, B = Fire would be almost essential in a 2D Metroid game.  The flash aim-with-the-mouse style is good for action games and such, but for Metroid, I think that would be a bad move.

For the touch-screen select, I would put the visors on the on the left side.  I would definitely agree that the visors should stay on a toggle option after you select them, which could be delegated to a single button (Y, for example).  That way, toggling off a selected visor would just put you in the normal Combat Visor mode and toggling it on would switch to Thermal/X-Ray.  Toggling for the Ship Visor (keeping in mind the warp idea), would just be calling your Ship... if it could land where you are.

As for the missiles on the touch-screen, I would place the various missile types on the more-immediate-to-firing right side.  That way choosing between normal, ice and super missiles wouldn't be that much more difficult.  And you could just use the X button as a toggle the same way the Select button worked in NES-Metroid, M2, and SM, or you could just delegate the X button to solely firing missiles (which would be easier for using Power-Bombs).  I personally don't like the "hold down the L-button" deal in MF and ZM... it's too cramped.
my umbrella goes directly to Bankai
those ideas sound good for the controls (btw, it was hold R in the GBA games. L was for aiming. it still makes possible SM-style aiming if that button is free from missiles/pbs)

something that looks kinda overcomplicated is the use of visors. unless the cave has more ilumination, you'll be wearing the thermal visor 90% of the time and it would become kinda boring to see everything infrared (samus isn't the predator). more exits help the idea since there's a greater chance of external lightning in the caves.

the BSL sectors could be other planets that were researched before so the m2 enviorments wouldn't be necessarily tied directly with them and that can let the devs make other kinds of enviorments (it's a bit clichè to run into the usual fire/ice/water pattern once again but unique areas like NOC would be nice to see)

I'm terrible with my right and left... you said what I meant

Oh, I didn't mean that Samus should have it on all the time; just in a few areas (deeper down, lava could be used for illumination).

I think it would be really cool to bring back the desert part of PYR.  I really liked that, and since SR388 is sorta just a barren rock, it works really well.  I think a little mountain range action wouldn't be a bad idea either... maybe add in a little TRO somewhere... Haha, I just really liked the areas in Fusion, and most of them seem very possible for SR388 (except for the jungle, I guess).
This topic seems a bit confused whether this will be first person or side-scrolling.  I'd rather have a 2D Metroid, simply because I think that Nintendo has been using first person as much as they can to try and get as good as game as Prime 1, but looking at MPH...yeah.  Also, in 2D you could have more freedom with background.  While a remake on the DS would be awesome, I just hope Nintendo doesn't tack on stylus uses everywhere, as they have been so far.
Metroids Are Jerks
Right now, we're actually talking about a 2D Metroid game.  All the visor/missile selection talk is referring to using the bottom screen as a sort of menu for selecting different visors and such for the 2D game.  The different visors would work as a filter over the whole screen and the effects of the filter would be dependent on the visor (i.e. Thermal gives you Predator-vision, X-ray lets you see hidden blocks).

We talked about an FPA version very briefly, but decided it would be best on the Wii and not on the DS.

I would love to see a remake just as long as it improves on the original Metroid II and (like Ark said earlier) not kill the atmosphere of the game.

Yeah, I played that last night and it was quite interesting. I really want to see this finished.
Devonodev: Other D
a metroid remake for the DS would be good.
but knowing nintendo, they would probably add a ton of new features. Rolling Eyes
Anywhere, everywhere
Cuz new features are soooooo horrible. :/
Devonodev: Other D
nintendo should keep it the same as the original. just change the graphics and the phisics a bit.
and mabie add a map

EDIT: my 100th post! :P
Normally a straight port would be alright, but in the case of metroid 2, I'd definately want new features. That's why AM2R looks so cool. It's a remake that's revamping the gameplay, which was - quite frankly - pretty much boring.

This guy, Jonas Kyratzes, makes compelling arguments about the merits of Metroid II's technically limitations being used to create atmosphere and psychologic effects in players.
Super Metroid Addict
I still own the original M II:RoS and yesterday i beated it up again, even though the games seems a bit more retarded than the jewels of the crown Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion,it still gives so much fun,and it has a special meaning to me,cause it was the first metroid game i've ever played...
A childhood friend i used to hang up with had it,and he did sold me in 1997 for 5 bucks,i used to play it when i was younger at his home, but he was dumb and kept erasing the save files i created, but even beeing one of the worst metroids in what comes to graphics,i enjoy it...
A remake woud never be as dumbly fun as this one was...
We saw how remakes are adulterated in metroid Zero mission, even beeing a great game,i still prefer the original NES version...But MzM runs so smooth, and with "oh so amazing" graphics that makes younger people like it more...
I'm not that interest in graphics(even though a good game with good graphics is excelent),there are some old games that have a certain "je ne sais quois" xD

If M II:RoS remake would be made by Nintendo, and if they don't put any more prequel in between, and if*spoilers* the ship at the 100% ending of metroid prime 3:corruption is really Delano 7,they would have to put Sylux there...maybe as someone sabotaging the planet as samus went on and on and killed more metroids...but...a remake with storyline alterations at this point could eventually lead to more story line errors and lead to a Super Metroid Remake, and i don't think Nintendo is really oriented that way...

I think that if Metroid Dread was at any point being developped,Nintendo may have quitted it because either the storyline was not that consistent,or maybe because they weren't just interested in releasing another 2-D side-scroller metroid now,due to all rthe dumb kids who just drooled over Metroid Prime:Hunters 'cause to them it was like playing a portable FPS(even though MPH is a FPA,don't misinterpret me)

well.sorry for the extensive writing...

Which leads me to believe that, if an M2 remake comes about, the original would be included (with the added bonus of flash memory, so no battery-death save-erases).  Now here's the question: Would they stretch it to fit the DS's screen(s), or would they retain the regular dimensions (think RoB and SotN in Dracula X Chronicles)?

As for Zero Mission, I think the only real lamentable thing about its graphical design in relation to the other titles is the inconsistencies with Super's intro.  Had finally seen it, and Samus was using that weird leg-bundle jump (well, she did at some point in that prologue) and the Mother Brain site was shaped as it was in the original, but ZM used a more natural looking jump and altered the MB's area, which is slightly bothersome to me/my sensibilities.
Super Metroid Addict
The new MB's area was annoying...well, i owned metroid zero mission, but a friend of mine borrowed it to play and his NDS was robbed,so,adios metroid zero mission,so then,i downloaded an emulator(even though i hate emulators) and a MZM rom and started to play it...even though in the GBA and NDS i played the game without dying a single time,in the emulator i completely sucked,i died to Kraid a couple times, even though Ridley was a piece of cake, and Aurora Unit..erm...Mother Brain is nearly impossible in the emulator...
i just hate playing on the PC.
but..returning to the topic,i agree with tfj wtvr xD..a remake would never be as fun as the original cause the original was so retardly fun that was ubberly fun...i never got lost, even though since i started reading this forum,i only see people complaining about getting lost and spending lots of hours backtracking to see where they were supposed to go..i have to admit it,it's my favorite metroid game next to Metroid Prime and Metroid prime echoes

Ah, so that's what this Aurora Unit thing I've read mentioned is... Haven't rightly put two and two together (11, in base-3) between the name and those MB-ish pics (did they even have "Aurora Unit" on the display?).  As for a remake, I'd might end up liking it better than I would M2 (tried it on emulator a bit, but I'm likely to hold off such activity until the acquisition of a controller).  What'd really been busting my chops is Link's Awakening; how do I get what I need to get past that raccoon?  I've tried messing around with that monkey at the beach, but nada. Uargh... *forgets what else I might've said... which is happening often for my last thought or two*
Super Metroid Addict
oh tjf588,I've alreday beaten Link's awakening, some months ago,but i don't remember that part..i guess i went to gamefaqs or so,because those trading sequences are completely freaky..meanwhile,i forgot my nds with The Phantom hourglass in it at my girlfriend's house, and when i realized it,i went back to get it,and she was playing it and having lots of fun, that i let her borrow my old DS(the silve rone, the first model)and the zelda game cart..she already liked metroid, cuz samus a kick ass girl, but she didn't like zelda..xD
well, getting back to topic...x.x...nowadays,mII is a bit crappy, but when i first played in what?1994/1995 it was such a kick ass game...i still beat it sometimes...xD,but now i'm beating Super Metroid xD..already beaten the first metroid in a old NES xD

Consider, ark, that at least it is intelligible. Lack of spaces after punctuation, and punctuation that isn't entirely correct (but still near the mark) are hardly things to complain about.
