I've always wanted to know who this is?

Can anyone explain?
Thread title:
I like turtles.
It's clearly a statue of Adam Malkovich.  It proves that Sakamoto had Other M planned out for years!

I think it's nothing more than a foreboding looking statue strategically placed to make the player feel that they are entering an area where something horrible lives.

After playing Metroid 2 years ago I suddenly thought it looked like a Queen Metroid. The Chozo could have designed the statue to look like one, had they known that the metroids evolve to that state. It's all possible.

That's what I think it is. Since Metroid 2 came out first and Zebes and SR388 both being home to the chozo at some point, decided to make a replica statue of Queeny on zebes.

[edit] actually it could just be a menacing creature as Opium said. They are designed the same as those statues that guard elevators in the NES metroid. Which of course was made before Metroid 2. No metroid evolution was thought up then presumably.
I like turtles.
It also looks kind of like the bottom part of the World of Chaos in Kingdom Hearts.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I guess it could have been a possible iteration for Kraid's appearance, just as the giant Ridley head thing is before entering his area.  Or perhaps another miniboss, finally omitted in favour of the baby Kraid?

I agree that it could just be a statue / gargoyle of sorts (the fact that it matches the colour of the surrounding room structure supports this), but it seems odd that it has a complete body, whereas the others just have heads (Ridley, and the baby Kraid room).

I think it's just an homage to the statues that you see at the elevators in metroid 1. Since this statue in Super metroid is placed right next to an elevator as well (as it is still Zebes and I recal one at the NES Norfair elevator too). This statue in Super though is placed a bit further back after finding the secret passage to it. So as you go down to norfair first to get the Hi jump boots you might ask yourself where is that statue ?. Then when you come back up and find the secret passage you are also rewarded with seeing the old statue. A nice little touch that this game does so well. I don't think they hold any significance or meant to resemble bosses though.

The Ridley head at the lower norfair elevator statue and the Rock formation in lower norfair in super are definately meant to resemble Ridley though I think.
I like Big Butts and I can not lie
I always thought the one at lower Norfair resembled Crocomire actually
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Yeah, I guess his and Ridley's heads are both long, thin, and saurian-looking. Think

My thirst is endless.
What the people above said. It's probably just to intimidate you.

It would however, make a really cool boss!
It would indeed. As a kid I always wanted it to just wake up from some sort of in game trigger and you have to fight it.

I think there purpose in Metroid 1 was to intimidate but in super it's there mostly as a nod to Metroid 1 but with it's up to date polished graphics of the time. Just to make you go, coooool !
Guys, you're forgetting about one more statue in Lower Norfair.
I'm talking about room where you're supposed to kill Fune and
enter statue's mouth to get Energy Tank. It looks like giant stoned Kraid
The Bomb that says it all .!..

Is talking about the statue behind the Fune.
I like Big Butts and I can not lie
There's the one at the entrance of Lower Norfair as well
Yeah that's the Ridley head at the elevator I mentioned.

About the other statue. I agree it does look more like Crocomire than Ridley, but doesn't actually resemble either closely enough to call it one or the other. Just a statue depicting a cave dwelling saurian type creature.
i think turtle had a point...
