At first I thought they were Nightbarbs, then I thought they were Ing Larva Swarm, but they're not either. They're the wrong colour and shape. What are they? Are they only seen there, and therefore unnamed and unscannable?

Cheers,

Matt

See my avatar?  That's what you're talking about.  It's called an Airthorn and can be scanned in a SW state.  It does have a logbook entry, but it's dummied.  However, I happen to have the text for both:
Quote:
Mechanism: Airthorns
Rogue airborne mechanoids.

Targets are small and travel
in packs for safety. Avoid
contact.

Quote:
The Luminoth made the Airthorn to patrol local airspace. The small, speedy machines were a boon to the war effort until their programming failed. Now rogue, they serve the Ing as fiercely as they served their creators.
The only other place I remember posting this was on SCU's message board, but it's gone.

theres an extra enemy that isnt part of the logbook?  wait, and its only scannable from a SW?  does it count towards scan percent?  and i was always wondering about your avatar... looked familiar for no reason.

...
Could this lead to what avengah calls "202%" (101% items, 101% scans)?

Yeah, Mills better rebuild his site before some former SCU fans sue him  laugh new

Their logbook entry is dummied, so they don't count toward the scan percentage.  If they did, the Airthorns would be a bit more well known instead of a very obscure oddity in Echoes lore.
Master Zed (or anyone who's done this successfuly):
How did you get that scan? I can't trigger those creatures to come out when I'm in the SW, and when I enter from Trial Grounds, they appear but leave quickly afterward, giving me no chance to scan them when I use the SW. Did you enter the area from Duelling Range?

Yeah, though I don't see why you couldn't do it from Trial Grounds if you took care to walk through the ether to avoid setting off the event trigger that summons the Airthorns.  Just walk to the other side, hop on top of the tunnel, and move forward along it back to Trial Grounds until they appear.  The other trigger (there are two, though there isn't a good reason for it) is somewhere around the start of the bridge on the Duelling Range side.

I just did it from Duelling Range to keep what little Ether Jump skill I had up, using Ing Cache 4 as my initial entrance.

Ok, I scanned one by walking along the tunnel. You said these have a logbook entry; where does it show up, because I haven't found it.

You should add this creature in the wiki here, or under 'other' on the main page, if you can do that kind of stuff.

I also said it's dummied.  The only way to access the entry that I know of (unless someone can hack an appropriate AR code to make it show up) is by opening root\Metroid3.pak on the disc and looking for the word Airthorn.  Since GC discs require a modified drive to read, your best bet for verifying the truth with your own eyes would be to download Echoes via a torrent like I had to.

And I don't mess with the wiki, but I can contribute more than my avatar for an image if there is a need (I asked Metroid Menace for some model pics of it when SCU was still around, it was for a project that never really got off the ground).
A wiki page now points to this topic as a description of Mystery Enemy.
