"Looks like Ridley left a trail..."
okay, so ive read before that people were having problems when trying to super jump horizontally, and it just sometimes doesnt work. someone even made a cheat code so u could hold l or r to go horizontally.

HOLD JUMP + direction, dont just press jump.
and i kno this could be really obvious to others, but i thought i'd just point that out teach

EDIT: Sorry, let me make it more clear.
When you hold in a shinespark and you want to super jump horizontally, hold jump (making samus float for about a second). Within the second that she floats (while you are HOLDING jump), press the direction that you want to go. It should work fine and easy.

When you press jump instead of holding it, the "window of opportunity" appears to be very short, because holding jump keeps the "window of opportunity" open.
Thread title:
I don't have any trouble shinesparking horizontally, but I can't figure out how to go diagonally.
Don't think you can in SM. I know you can in ZM, not sure about Fusion.

Whaa??  There's like 4 places where it's practically mandatory if you care about time.

Diagonally is very easy, just hold down whatever button you have set for diagonal/up aiming (usually L or R) and then press jump.

That's kinda the same instructions for shinesparking horizontally in ZM, and for some reason it's much easier to pull off in that game.  Since I have never found a definite technique for horizontal shinespark in Super, I just tap the jump button + the direction repeatedly.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  It can be so picky and incosistent, like space jump timing.

To do it in Super, the window of opportunity is much tighter than in Zero Mission.  You just need to press jump, immediately followed by left / right, whereas Zero Mission gave you quite a lenient window.

I don't. I always take Super and Prime at a leisurely pace.

um, guys, it's actually quite easy as long as you aren't doing something like mid-air horizontal. Just hold jump, don't tap it.

... Oh wow, apparently then the first post is actually helpful. Assuming people read it.

I've always abided what I posted here

well, as far as game mechanics go:
Being in certain poses will immediately trigger a super jump. Almost all normal jump poses (but not falling poses) will trigger it.
When a super jump is triggered, it will go through a windup, and at the end of the windup do a vertical super jump.
During the windup, if jump and up/aim up/forward are both held down (it doesn't matter when they're pressed just so long as both are being held down at the same time), a super jump will be done in that direction immediately.

The only tricky part should be breaking out of spinjump to start a mid-air super jump.

Thats why i said to HOLD jump, because it works EVERY time.

NO, the window of opportunity IS OPEN AS LONG AS YOU HOLD JUMP.

LOL thank you, but i assume these people need to read it again. stern

Perhaps it could have been worded a little better.  Perhaps I didn't read it carefully enough.  Perhaps both.  Either way, the point stands, in that it should now be easy enough for anybody to consistently spark horizontally.  Thank you.

Yea, that's my fault, considering I've re-read what I wrote and it barely seems to be clear.
Okay, I edited it.

I just did a quick run of Super, and pulled off every horizontal shinespark effortlessly.  Now I just need to stop trying to figure out why the fuck something so simple has remained so elusive to me for the last 15 years.  Thank you.
I thought it was diagonal sparks that were the problem. I've never had problems with horizontal ones, and I suck at Super.

It is because of the bad design-issues. Nail me, but I am not kidding. (the relationship to what it does and what it takes can factly be simpler and more intuitive without getting into trouble with other things)

Diagonal sparks should never be a problem.  As Opium said above, just hold the 'aim-up' button (default is R) and press jump.

Sorry if it's been answered dude, but it seems as if it hasn't. To Shine Spark diagonally, you simply hold the R button and face the direction you wanna go then jump.

Absolutely!!! :D Totally didn't even see that I am sorry for posting a pointless post.
