What controller setup do you guys use for the SNES controller? I'm not using the defaults, but I'd like to know what setup is the most efficient. Right now I have:

A: Dash
B: Jump
Y: Fire
X: Select Weapon
Select: Cancel Weapon
R: Diagonal Up
L: Diagonal Down

I guess I just played like that my first time through, and now I'm used to it. Yet, I feel like it could be more comfortable. What do you guys do? Thanks in advance.

I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
You can see it in my vid (well kinda, I choose Japanese before changing), but my setup has always been:

Y=Shoot
X=Dash
B=Jump
A=Item Cancel
L,R, and select are the same.

Doing so lets me hit/hold X with the side of my index finger, but that started hurting after not very long (I had to use a bandaid on my finger when doing the 1:00).
What luck, there's french fry stuck in my beard.
Off-topic: I'd just like to point out that I'm from Minnesota too!  Nice to see some other Minnesotans here!

Okay, carry on.
well, the most efficient control set-up for me has always been the default. With default, most of the movements just come naturally.. one problem though is that is kinda hard to use the select button while running, which sometimes tends to slow you down if you want to do that quickly in a small distance(from your starting point to the door you want to open).

yeah... probably looks tough to use. btw bullet, sucks to know that, I think I was being quite selfish with you about the whole 100% run thing...

off-topic: cool, I finally did my 0:37 - 26% on the cart!.. yeah that was using saves this time. ^^

I don't remember what the default is..I just don't like running with A or something, cause I don't have a claw hand to be able to push Y+B+A a lot or something like that.

:37? Cool.
The default involves jumping with A and shooting with X. Most SNES platformers jump with B and run/shoot whatever with Y. Adapting's a bitch, I'm hardly able to use defaults without pressing the wrong button every other second.
hmm..

default setting:

A: jump
B: dash
Y: item cancel
X: shoot
L: aim down
R: aim up
Select: item select

imagine running(lets say to the right)and pressing the select button. In your left hand you'll have to use the thumb to press forward(right)and the index finger(also on the left hand)to use the select. A bit disturbing, huh?

that's the only problem I have with this setting.

Actually... running to the right and hitting select is much easier if you use the the base of your thumb to hold the d-pad and the tip to hit select... going left, however, isn't as easy  Wink
PAGE BREAKER
Ready and willing.
Geez, if you have 6 fingers, do we have to dock you a penalty on SM?  Rolling Eyes

Did you get that :37 on tape?  What made the difference? Savin?
yeah I recorded that in a tape. I'll probably mail it off this saturday :\. I saved 3 times... and I just realized now that's way too much for a simple pure speed run 0.o. Next time I'm going to try one saving one time before hitting Maridia.

first save: 0:08 (in the bubble room/before speed booster)
second save: 0:017 (before Maridia)
third save: 0:29 (in the ship before tourian)

I used every trick there is for the exception of the... murder beam :p and screw ups, I actually think if I gather them all they'd only cost no less than 15 secs. Still, my 0:38 is a pretty solid run comparing to this one only that in the :38 I messed badly doing that quick super jump before entering the wrecked ship and the zebetite part was just plain horrible.

anyway, saves makes life easier 8) . Whoever wants to break that record would probably want to check these times, I guess.
I'm trying this on my second go through the game:

R=shoot
L=diagonal up
X=switch
Y=jump
A=N/A
B=run
select=cancel

It's pretty good, but my last go had X as shoot, so I keep accidentally
hitting X and then missiling open blue doors and stuff. It was really
embarrassing when I didn't have enough missiles to take out a red
door, and I had to scrounge around a while Mr. Green
Too many fangirls to count
I'm screwed. With my EMU setup, I set my controls to right being left and left being right. I got used to it and have to have it there and am crippled on cart now.
Yay for reviving ancient threads and bumping stickies.
Too many fangirls to count
I didn't notice Motherbrain_Jr's bump. But it is true. And thank you for minimodding.
red chamber dream
Thank you to both of you for mini-modding. Note: sarcasm. Please don't do that.
I saw the bump, but motherbrain_jr added something worthwhile to the topic, so I think it's okay. Believe me, if something needed to be said about the bump, it would have been.
Y-shoot
B-jump
A-Nothing
X-Item cancel
R-Dash
L-Diagonal up
Select-...take a wild guess...

That's my setup...I like it...allows me to be constantly pressing dash...and it doesn't hurt your fingers at all...
y=shoot
b=jump
a=dash
x=item select
select=item cancel(don't really use it)

others are same
I have large thumbs.
I really, REALLY hate that you can't change the button for
menu, because my start button is totally trashed.
I have to pull back the skin around my thumb and press down on
start really hard with my nail. It's nearly impossibly hard to do. :x
One word of advice...buy a new controller....*sigh*
Hehe, I've had the same controller since 1992, and 5 people has been playing on it since then, and still today, me and my brother plays. My start button hardly works, and the D-pad is almost broken, I still manage to pull off some neat times in SM, without having to replay anything.
red chamber dream
Wouldn't it be a whole lot easier to just buy a new one, like Roxinos said? I mean, they don't cost much at all.
*nods* I have like four controllers...and one turbo...the turbo controller's R button is screwed so we don't use it any more...and all the others are perfectly fine...just an occasional stick in B...mostly we've only played SM and Mario...mostly...
Buying a new one is easier said that done here. Nowhere to buy it and if you are lucky. You might get a used one for about $30.
red chamber dream
Well, you can find some good used ones, like on eBay and stuff.
