Er.... Nintendo has existed for over a hundred years now.
Anyways, I'm kind of saddened to see how few people here didn't first play it on the NES. Metroid was the very first video game I ever played and owned. I can remember, back in the day, drawing out the map on my own so I could remember where everything was, and having Kraid kick my ass for the fifteenth time in a row.... Ah yes, them was the good days.
I could have sworn it was on one of those Player's Choice machines back in the 80's when NES was really huge. Though that doesn't necessarily count as being an arcade, it might have been what he meant.
Back on topic, NES, it was in 88 and I was 8. I remember bombing though my first secret wall thinking I was so cool XD
I first played Metroid sometime in the late 80's when my parents bought me Nintendo :). I never beat the game in NES, because I usually panicked in tourian when all the metroids came all over me, and didn't know how to get rid of them. (hey, I was about 6-8 years old back then ;))
And it gave me nightmares (ie. you're walking in a park and suddenly a metroid jumps from behind the tree and sucks your brains out).
I'm not sure about the original part, but the rest of it is a surprisingly good description of a metroid game, especially considering how they're some of the very few games produced by Nintendo that aren't cuteified (for a Nintendo game, Crocomir's death scene in Super was down-right gruesome).
I played it first on MP bonus. I was 5 when it waso ut so surprisingly I didn't have a NES. I first played Metroid on the SNES with Super Metroid.
Played Metroid II notl ong after... I was scared of the Metroids. Bigger they got the more they scared me! (I was bout 12/13 so I can be forgiven for it :P)
I got fed up with Metroid as I never knew what to do or where to go and EVERY room looked the same! Was cool to see a few areas from Super Metroid tho.
I unlocked it in Prime like many others & played for a few minutes. Then I died :D So then I watched the speed runs since I figured that I would never play it seriously (well maybe when my ZM arrives).
