Does that mean hurting cows in Master Quest gets you something.

Not random cows. It's rather obvious which cows he's talking about, when you see it.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Those were the most bizarre cows ever, at least placement wise.
Heh, yeah, I remember importing WW just for Ura-Zelda, and it was so hard to keep from spoiling that to my sister before she could play it herself.

It took me a 3 flickerbat weeks to beat that game without help.

I don't really get the asking for help thing, at least as far as puzzles are concerned.  I guess, if you look for help on action parts, like boss strategies, then you still have to perform the action and the accomplishment is still yours.  But if you look up the answer to a puzzle, there's nothing to feel good about, because you didn't do anything.  It's like looking up where expansions are hidden.

No guides, no nothin'.
Well then, you rock at Zelda.

I only look stuff up when it's along the lines of "Where the fuck is it?" and I've been looking for a looooong time. Sometimes searching for things gets to a point where it's not fun anymore, but simply an obstacle to the subsequent fun.

What about the CDi games?

Sometimes, though, a puzzle is no longer interesting and becomes simply frustrating.  If you get stuck on a puzzle for weeks (or months!) on end and simply cannot figure it out, getting help is your best bet.  Otherwise the game becomes a paperweight, and you just sort of glare at it occasionally.  For instance, I got through the Water Temple up to the point with Dark Link, and quit playing for a long time because I never noticed the time block in the room with the Longshot.  Had I figured it out on my own (after wandering around for a few days doing nothing I looked up some directions), I really doubt I would have been any more satisfied than I was with just looking it up.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I am. There's only a few games that I will never ask for help on, and those are mainly the Myst games. Myst IV was so. Damn. Hard. But I'd never go online to look up solutions when the entire game is solely about puzzles. Getting help would take away the whole point of the game. On Zelda, though, I don't look for help, simply because the games are too easy.

I wish I had internet when I played the first Myst game, i couldn't figure out a damn thing no matter how hard I tried, and therefore never manged to finish it, or make any real progress.
Once you figure out the tower rotation thing everything is easy, I think.

Heh, if you know what to do, you can "beat" the game in well under five minutes.
soaking through
I demand to know how.

Well, you know how the whole point of the game is to take the white page into the fireplace? Well, you go there from the very beginning of the game.
First, you know the eight marker switches on the island? Begin by going to them all and flipping them in the opposite direction (I think it's from down to up). Flip the one on the dock LAST, and it will open to reveal the white page.
Also, you have to know the fireplace code (it's ALWAYS number 158). So, go to the fireplace in the library, enter code 158, go to the green book with the white page, and BAM! You've beaten the game.

Of course, since the game is so old, the developers never thought/weren't able to make the fireplace code random, so that's why it works. Normally, you'd have to get ALL the red and/or blue pages from the different ages and bring them to the red and blue books in the library, so you can listen to Sirrus or Achenar tell you the fireplace code. If you've already beaten the game, of course, doing that is not necesary.
You would also have to go to Channelwood and Stoneship to read the fragmented letter so that you could figure out how to open the marker switch vault.

I have never played a myst game. I probably never will.

I actually got stuck after I flew to some place in the rocket, and in that new area I couldn't figure out what I was doing, what the place was called or how to get back to the main area of the game. Though I was much younger and dumber then, so it might be easier now, if I still had the disc.

Meh, it will probably be a little easier, but it's probably the hardest of all the Myst games. Well, maybe not, but some particular ages are incredibly hard. Than again, some ages, like Channelwood, just insult your intelligence.
I found Riven harder.  I think that the puzzles have different approaches, though.  Riven is more "Hmm, I saw this here, and that there, so that means I have to do this here" while Myst is more "Click random locations and something might happen!"  That was how they struck me, anyway.

And Exile is just, "oh, that's not so hard." But Myst IV is, "oh my gosh, I have to know math??"
