I decided to make a topic for this, since MZM's board has one as well (and I think MP also has one).

This topic will be basically for any discussion about low% runs, whether it's 6% NBMB, 15% unglitched, or anywhere in between, TAS, unassisted, whatever. Anything having to do with completing the game with a minimal amount of items.

So... anyone do any good 14% runs recently? I'm in the middle of my first one; I decided to take the ice route and CWJ over the evil missile lake (much easier than bomb jumping, I can't DBJ for shit), and I'm at Norfair with Kraid, Phantoon, and Draygon killed. Only thing left before Tourian is Lower Hell- er, I mean, Lower Norfair- and satan- er, I mean, Ridley. Hopefully the ice beam will make that fight a bit easier than having just the normal power beam (I've attempted a 15% run for practice before, but my data got wiped before Ridley so I decided to just cut the bullshit and go for 14% ice).

6% NBMB

Care to explain what items exactly? Sounds interesting, and good luck on your run.
yeah
6% NBMB is the current "glitched" TAS.

Do you know where I can find a video? I can't seem to find it.
Well, using the X-ray glitch, sure it's possible, even on console. It's just very very difficult. I'm actually trying a suitless run, maybe I will do a 15% run after that. I want to try all the possibilities.

Tyjet66 : You can find a video on Youtube.

Your friendly neighbourhood Cpadolf is the creator of the run.

The X-ray acquisition is probably my favourite part of any Metroid movie I've ever seen. aiwebs_011

Wow, I didn't even think of putting 2 and 2 together, the any% and NBMB are the same. I've seen "them" before.  laugh new

A NBMB run is usually the opposite of a low%, as the idea is to collect as many items as possible without fighting any of the bosses, with the exception of Bomb Torizo.

So, since Cpadolf didn't kill Bomb Torizo, doesn't that mean this isn't technically a traditional NBMB or a low%?
That would be considered as a TRUE NBMB run. But since it's nearly impossible for normal players to do that, Bomb Torizo is not included in the list of skippable mini-bosses.
yeah
He is on the PAL version though.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
He can be skipped on it, yes, but you still need to be almost perfect with the arm pumping and jumping.

The run of Cpadolf's above is the current best any% glitched TAS, which also happens to be the lowest percentage possible.

Using methods that are currently known, of course.
Embarrasing Fact: Power suit made by lowest bidder
At this point, I'm actually inclined to say that 6% is going to remain the lowest percent for Super Metroid, unless a glitch that removes equipment is found.
Morph Ball, Missiles, Bombs is basically impossible to avoid. Super Missiles is required to get almost anywhere else in the game.
If anything, Ice Beam might be able to break something... but I don't believe there's anything available to break with just those 5 items.
Reserve Tanks can break a few things, but not significantly enough by themselves to get anywhere, I don't think.
I could see how maybe the Ice Beam could break things by letting you glitch through walls or something of that nature, but how do Reserve Tanks glitch things?

The Space-Time beam can write to save data. I suppose it might theoretically be possible to precisely overwrite the data that determines Samus's percentage...but it wouldn't beat the any% for time because of the beam reqs, and even if the displayed percentage gets lower, you'd still have the equipment, which seems contrary to the purpose of a low% run.
I like Big Butts and I can not lie
The percentage isn't stored, it's calculated using your current equipment at the end
yeah
I've been thinking about low% possibilities using the spacetime beam recently, and I've thought of some interesting things that could be done with it. Some of this is speculation about stuff that may or may not be possible, but it is interesting to say the least:

1. Start new file, complete Ceres Station (0%)
2. Go to Blue Brinstar, collect Morph Ball and missiles (2%)
3. Get bombs (3%)
4. Go to Brinstar, collect Super Missiles, save in save room in main shaft (4%)
5. Copy file, collect Power Bombs and X-ray scope (6%)
6. Go to Maridia, collect Plasma with X-ray glitch (7%)
7. Go to Red Brinstar, collect Spazer (8%)
8. Go to Norfair, collect Ice (9%)
9. Perform Reset glitch and save (9%)
10. Redo Ceres Station (8%)
11. Corrupt Beams, Morph ball and Bombs equipment data with Spacetime beam (possible?) (3%)
12. Go to Tourian via X-ray scope glitch (3%)
13. Complete game without beating Mother brain (3%)

Interesting, to say the least. If we can find some way to corrupt Samus's equipment and delete items with the Spacetime beam, we can knock the percentage down to 3%.

Ah. Well, fuck what I was saying then. ^^
Using glitch, is it possible to do less than 6% ? The Morph Ball, the Missiles, the Morph Bomb, Super Missiles. I think that's all you need.
You need the X-Ray scope to glitch past everything you can't kill. You need powerbombs to get the X-Ray scope. You need super missiles to get power bombs. You need missiles and bombs to get super missiles. You need the morphball to get missiles.

That's the dependency chain. To reduce the percentage, you'll have to knock one of those out, or figure out a way to delete equipment after picking it up.
Why X-ray scope ? I don't think you need something like that. You could do something without it (forgot about powerbombs, you need them).
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Any other items are necessary for navigation.  X-ray is used to glitch outside of rooms, and travel to areas that you shouldn't normally be able to get to.  Watch the movie linked on page one, and you'll see it in action.

Have you not seen the 6% TAS? You should go educate yourself in this category before asking silly questions. >.> Oh and, Anything Kejardon says becomes law.

It's not like it's a No-Boss/Mini-Boss. He use the X-ray scope to skip Motherbrain. But you still need the Ice Beam to defeat the Metroids if you want to finish the game. So, it's really impossible to do a less-than-6% run, unless you can use a glitch to bypass Tourian completely and finish the game, in place of the X-ray.

PS : I have watched most of the TAS videos on tasvideos.org. But like I said, it is possible to do a 6% run without the X-ray scope.
