Ice Beam doesn't do anything special in the fight itself. The "bombs in the stomach" method is a pretty quick kill, though, provided you don't take too much damage otherwise.
To beat the MQ, shoot her open mouth and then when she spits those goo-spiky things, just screw attack them... Bombing the belly is also an hypotesis, but it's more risky

It is? I always end up facing the queen with 170 Missiles, so I can't do the Missile technique anyway. But I tried it. Ended up having to go through the hole on the bottom. I did the bomb technique, and the queen died in five rounds, less than that if you keep pelting her with Missiles between chances.
That was so funny, ark xD I'm pretty sure that you have to kill a couple of metroids or so...xD Go through the "industrial part of those ruins... the one that has all those fences or wtvr... xD I'm pretty sure you probably missed a metroid or two there
To the up-right of the space jump room there's an entrance into a building, as well as a shaft down the other side of that building (where a gamma metroid lurks). Inside the building are 2 gamma metroids and an alpha.
Back the way you came before getting the space jump, you should have gone up a long winding shaft with the fliers in it. Halfway up that shaft and to the right is where you'll find the rest of the metroids, which total 5 gammas and one alpha.
thanks carlmmii (no thanks to you other guys ). Will I have to go back for the ice beam at some point? Is there any of the 'traditional' ice beam/missile metroids further on?

Not until the very end of the game, by which time you will have passed 2 ice beam statues, one of which is right next to them (though a bit of a detour to get to).
In the ruins after those where you are, there are statues for every beam in the game, and, later, in the "volcano" Metroid Mommy is, there's a room beneath her that contains a broken Chozo Statue holding the Ice beam, so... no backtacking for that one:)
Didn't know where to post this and I couldn't be bothered to make a video and make a new topic.
There's a fairly large secret passage in ruins 3 when heading west for the 3rd Energy tank with the alpha along the corridor. The entrance to the tunnel is in one of the pipes in ceiling above you. It takes you around as a ball inside the ceiling for quite some time before coming to a dead end. It's clear they wanted to put something here like an item. Or maybe even some kind of escape route past the Alpha (can't think why since they need to be killed) but they forgot to omit it from the final game. I know this game is chock full of pointless shit like this but this one really seems to stand out
How many missiles do you have in total? Omegas have if i recall 40 missiles worth of health. Luckily 1 shot into their back = 3 shots, so you only need to use 14 missiles. 14 times 3 = 42. so that is 14 missiles into the back or 13 missiles into the back and 1 anywhere on the body. But you need to manipulate them to stay still so you can get behind them and fire several in one go.
