Yeah, I got lucky with my first setup, but I did make a separate save before Tourian to switch the final item in case anything got terribly wrong.
Metroid: Zero Mission (full gallery) Luckily you can make a 99% save before the final boss and beat that file over and over with different combinations of time and item %, so I "only" had to do four runs to complete the gallery:
1. Normal, 100% items, under 2 hours (saved at 99% for multiple pics) 2. Hard, 100% items, under 2 hours 3. Hard, 15% items or less 4. Normal, 15% items or less
Again I followed a guide for the speedrun. But unlike Fusion, ZM is non-linear, and the pro speedrun route does some scary stuff like horizontal bomb jumping. I wasn't ready for that, so I just used a speed guide that collects items in the natural order. Even so, both Normal and Hard speedruns felt more lenient than Fusion's IMO.
15% Hard was the real challenge for me. Tourian Metroids and Mother Brain with only two freaking missiles? No, thanks. I ended up ignoring E-Tanks completely and focused on having decent firepower. I had no health, but at least I didn't have to survive too long. This was my 15% setup:
- 9 mandatory items - Second missile tank - 3 Super Missiles - Hi-Jump - Screw Attack
I got Hi-Jump because otherwise you gotta bomb jump/wall climb everywhere. It's just a huge weight off my shoulder when traversing areas. Screw Attack makes boss fights much more tolerable because in 15% you have to destroy their little projectiles constantly for item drops. Plus SA is great in general (and like zeldacia said, helps a lot vs. Mecha Ridley's missiles).
I had a lot of fun with 15%, even though some parts were frustrating. Maybe it's because I was able to take my time after 3 consecutive Metroid speedruns. But yeah, they really make you learn those bosses, holy moly. My heart was racing the whole time during Mother Brain and the escape. Mecha Ridley was BS... it was manageable BS, but still BS. Sometimes he would throw like 3 attacks pretty much at once. One thing I found surprisingly fair is the stealth part. You get OHKO'd, but pretty much every room has a safe method. I did 15% Hard before Normal, so Normal was relatively a breeze with double Super Missiles and 5 missiles per tank.
nice!! i gotta tell you early, alicia is by far the best combat character in the game and can solo most missions
have fun figuring out how as you get further :)
Yeah Scouts seem super good. Like I cleared a Skirmish map a couple times to pay the old guy by having her just run across the map, shoot a guy in the head and take their shit. It owns.
Like Scouts being able to run for days seems kinda busted lol.
