Ahh, thanks :)

Wait, dumping?! You're telling me I've just registered at a place that will be dead in a few months? Or is phpBB being dumped in favor of something more reasonable?

edit: neatlify
Last I knew, we're upgrading to the next version of phpBB. Hopefully someone else can verify this.
Hm, in that case, nate should use 'forum software' when meaning 'forum software' :^)

edit: BTW:

Code:
Gzip compression Disabled

May I ask why? :X

edit: +compression issue

ok changed to 31. not going to bother with the html because we're dumping this forum in a few months anyway.

Hah. Ha ha.
Hmmz -- is that supposed to resemble an evil laugh?

should be on when inside /forum. if not then something broke. can't have it on for the site proper because the windoze ie quicktime activex control chokes (actually i strongly suspect it's ie but you know).

It's on the forum statistics page, so something seems to be broken indeed :^) Fault of phpBB, I shouldn't wonder...

Windoze? Do people still use that stuff? :S
even if i could just block ie then that would solve many things. but that minority is very large. compression isn't going to make that big of a difference on the main site anyway ... surely the cpu on render is going to be the bottleneck there with or without gz (bandwidth is a drop in the bucket for me).

edit: forgot to talk about phpbb. no idea what's going on there nor do i really care for reasons explicated elsewhere. this forum is a disaster as far as i'm concerned. looking forward so very much to upgrading.
phpBB _is_ a complete disaster. It will be foolish to upgrade to a newer version phpBB in the hope that it will solve your problems. Very typical of the Lunix-centered 'community' these days. In their passion to beat M$ they have created the perfect windoze clone, including commercially available add-on software. That's what you get when mixing politics with attempts at serious development.

edit: I'm not suggesting you block IE -- I'm suggesting that you remove I.E-specific measures. We have standards for a reason.

What if you want to look at this site in school or a library or any place you're not supposed to download anything
What is the purpose of a network connection if you can't use it? :S

For some people, this is the only way to get online.
I mean, he says he can't download anything -- sending without being able to receive is a bit useless, ain't it?

edit: fix typo
Cook of the Sea
Well, not necessarily.  I mean, library computers are mostly meant for just simple browsing of pages and such.

Excuse the self-quoting, but I've already addressed that point.
lol. see, that's why you shouldn't waste time pointing things like that out, because the people you are pointing them out to are 99.9% of the time 1) not going to get it and 2) not going to care if you take even more time to make them get it.

so you don't like phpbb 3? what do you think of smf?
In that case, they don't deserve tools of this sophistication until they've mastered them enough to keep themselves (and others) out of trouble.

Not into forum software (when I need something that will take ages of frustration to investigate, I usually write it myself) personally, but there's bound to be something better. The only reason why I'm a bit acquainted with phpBB is because I've ran into it's limits *while using it* many, many times (with problems that usually only manifest itself when trying to modify bad code).

edit: Got bored and went to take a peek at SMF. Even though it uses PHP and MySQL, it seems to be a <CENSORED>uva lot cleaner than phpBB :) Don't install that awful default theme, though...

Christ, all you Linux/Mac/Firefox/Alternative Browser elitists should be shot. Use it, be glad its 'better', and just shut up already, because the phrase "Those who think they know everything annoy us who actually do." really stands out in my mind when I read that crap.

Oh, and by the way, I use Linux myself, but I dont go around toting that everywhere like its a badge of sophistication.

Couldn't agree more. Pathetic bunch of n00bs who haven't even had a glimpse at the true extends of existence. Even worse than most windoze lusers, who tend to be simply ignorant. As the proud owner of a NetBSD personality, I despise them as much as you do.

You're preaching to the choir here :)
also thought that it's your job to remind yourself that such language's applicability is at most limited to the speaker from which it came. no matter how much they say it's superior, the act of saying it alone will never make it so for you. i have found it easier throughout my life to simply ignore other people rather than to attempt to change their behavior.
Ignoring other people is at best difficult when you're forced to live and work with them on the Network.

What's true for you isn't necessarily true for everyone.  When weeds grow in your garden, even if you don't mind how they look, the flowers probably want them gone.

Think of the flowers, nate.
Again, preaching to the choir :)

Nevertheless, I want to keep it clear that I do *not* condemn the use of {windoze,os/2,vms,debian...} just because I happen to hate 'em. At the very least they are useful examples of how *not* to do things ;^)

It shows.
