Hello, after playing super Metroid for the hundreth time, I went looking to see what 'mods' there were for the emulated version of it. First and foremost I found was the Super Metroid Redesign made by Drewseph. I did quite a bit of research on it and decided it was something worth playing.

Here's where my problem begins; first and foremost I am quite new to the whole patching ordeal. So I downloaded both the Headered and Unheadered IPS files for it off of Drewseph's site (http://drewseph.zophar.net/). I looked at the readme for both IPS files and downloaded Lunar IPS as well as Super Metroid (JU).smc and Super Metroid (JU) [!].smc. I used Lunar IPS to patch both smc files with the cooresponding IPS files, and attempted using ZSNES to launch both patched smc files. The Headered one gave me a black screen and froze ZSNES, and the unheadered one gave me a black screen, but had the audio track for the Super Metroid Title Screen playing in the background, it did not freeze ZSNES.

So I did a bit of digging, and have tried downloading the smc files, headered and unheadered from different sites and patching them with the cooresponding ips files to no avail. I received varying results from these, ranging from crashing SNES to the same aforementioned effects of the other two smc files. So I tried doing patching it a different way, I renamed the smc files and the ips files giving each the same name, and placed them in folders to allow ZSNES to automatically patch them when loaded. And lo and behold I got the same results as when I patched it with Lunar IPS.

It occurred to me that the Emulator might be the problem, I am currently using ZSNES v 1.51 downloaded from the ZSNES site, by all accounts from what I've read, the only version that should not work is 1.4, whereas earlier versions of it work, and future versions work; so I am skeptical on whether it IS the emulator or not. Suffice to say, after reading over numerous threads on varying sites trying to diagnose and fix the problem I'm having, I am at a loss of what to do.

I decided to come here and post a thread since this is the site featured on Drewseph's site in hopes that more people here will be able to help. I would appreciate any assistance people here could give me so that I can be able to play Super Metroid Redesign.

Could you give the CRC32 of both the original unheadered ROM, and after patching with the unheadered patch?
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
If you've got the [!] version, you should be good to go.  Have you tried another emulator?  Or another version of ZSNES?  You could also try soft patching.  Give both the .smc and the .ips the same name, and place them in a folder together.  Then try loading it.
What'd you say?
He tried soft patching already. Perhaps try a different emulator? Not to use it forever but to help narrow down possible problems.

I play Redesign on ZSNES 1.51 just fine

Perhaps his copy is corrupted or missing files? It's always worth a try to narrow options (when reasonable) during troubleshooting.
