Project Base (official page)

-----

Project Base is a ROM hack of Super Metroid that keeps the original map mostly intact, while adding new stuff. It doesn't force the player to take a new path, or to use any advanced techniques. Well-known sequence breaks and shortcuts have been left alone, with many new ones added. Highly speedrunnable, and with a level of difficulty that is accessible to anyone. Works with Snes9X, ZSNES, higan/BSNES, and on SNES/flash cartridges.

FEATURES:
- General movement is less inhibited, with many new tricks made possible
- Modified enemies and bosses, including AI and graphical touch-ups
- Faster elevators, doors, room transitions and item-collection sequences
- Optional new color palette for the entire game
- Bug fixes and polish applied whenever possible
- New rooms added, others expanded and/or merged
- Alternate versions that offer even more ways to enjoy Super Metroid!

SPECIAL MOVES:
- RESPIN -- press jump at any time during a normal fall to resume spinning
- BACK FLIP -- while crouched, hold run, then press and hold jump + back
- BOMB SKIP -- hold down to avoid bomb jumping
- QUICK MORPH #1 -- hold item cancel + press down to instantly morph
- QUICK MORPH #2 -- hold L + press down, only works in the air
- DEMORPH JUMP -- until Spring Ball is equipped, holding run allows spin-jumping straight out of ball form
- SPEED BALL -- with Spring Ball equipped, Samus gains the ability to run at full speed as a ball
- UP SPIN -- while standing still, hold run to easily spin-jump straight up
- SPIN FALL -- hold jump as you fall from a ledge to flip automatically

ENHANCED EQUIPMENT:
- Beam travelling and firing speeds adjusted, auto-fire speed increased
- Charge beam draws energy and ammo drops from enemies toward you, also charges slightly faster
- Speed Booster has become a major power-up with several huge limitations removed
- Horizontal shinesparks can be exited into a full-speed run when Samus touches a slope
- Space Jump no longer stops working after you've fallen too far
- Missiles and super missiles can be fired faster
- Super missiles can be fired straight down while in the air to propel Samus upward
- X-Ray Scope speed increased
- Bomb timer shortened
- Underwater wall jumping and bomb jumping enabled
- Running speed no longer resets after jumping or falling

Thread title:
<<<empty space>>>
this sounds like an amazing idea, and I hope it works out :3 .just don't make any mistakes in hex or you might end up with a dead game. I know I have XP.

With that out of the way...

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE BETA.

This patch has:
- New palettes for every area and many new FX1/palette blend combos to enrich rooms a bit more
- New backgrounds for ALL of Brinstar and most of Crateria
- Greatly modified physics

Known "issues":
- Not all CRE palettes haven't been modified yet, nor have I touched enemies
- The ramp leading to grapple beam in Norfair requires a horizontal shinespark to get past and reach the door (Samus falls faster, so running and jumping won't work anymore until I fix the ramp's trajectory and length)
- Quicksand in Maridia can be a pain in the butt to get out of sometimes. To save yourself a few choice words, you might wanna make a savestate before you make a jump that could land you in it.
- 1-block holes in walls (the power bombs in the Etecoon room, before the reserve tank room in Norfair, super missiles in Maridia, etc.) are only slightly harder to enter because Samus falls faster.

Comments, critique, whatever else are welcomed.

That link just gives a very weird text document.

I'll go to MetCon and get it from there...  Then let you know. ;)

Edit: I didn't comb over your post, so sorry if I didn't notice it but...

Is for UNHEADERED. Razz

The Physics change...  It will take some getting used to.  Sequence breaks that depend on wall jumps aren't going to be as easy -at all.

I fired a charged beam up/diagonal - and there are some horizontal lines...  It doesn't look right. Confused

Edit: Or is that how it's supposed to look?

Edit2:  I like it.  The change in physics does change how you have to play the game.  Maybe I'm a wuss at doing the wall jumps, but getting the wave beam was interesting. IMO
i dislike the walljumping but im getting used to it aswell has bombjumping
I'm a huge fan of underwater walljumping and bombjumping. Gives so much more freedom while underwater.

I think he means within this hack, as they were both altered, and are now much easier.
Surprised there isn't more here.

Landing site is just beautiful.

Some things that I noticed.
- although wall jump has been altered, dramatically reduced shinespark distance requirements made a few things easier than i thought were going to be. (short charge can pretty much get you anywhere)
- as stated quicksand is a pain and doing Maridia without getting grapple is not 100% advised imho ;)
- exceptionally minor graphic issues:
♦ some mushroom bases in crateria were not properly integrated, blocky transition to next tile. See img.
♦ pipes in Maridia in quicksand are regular colours (is this CRE or whatever? i do not know what they are i'm afraid**)
- I'm not a massively thrilled by the yellow/blue "red brinstar" change, bit hard on the eyes imho, but still an interesting change.
- Jump/Bomb/UWWJ/UWBomb are very good - I enjoy the extra speed.

My thoughts:
I enjoyed this very much.
My favourite parts were Crateria and Wrecked Ship. The landscapes were vivid and refreshing.
Small changes to the suit were also nice.
Beams worked so well, the pink flash when firing, accelerating beam, new beam graphics - all good stuff.
Also I do not know why, but the part after spore spawn was just so well done as well graphics wise.

Great work Grime, thanks for the beta.

My cousin made a TAS video of this hack in 100% and 34 min end time. It's very entertaining and interesting.
You can see the video here.

Is part 1, I'll post the other videos during the week.
I hope you enjoy and comment.

Thanks, Mariofan! I saw your play-through on YouTube, I appreciate it muchly, and anyone else who puts their experiences online.

New versions are out now! This time there're several majorly different ways to play.
I can't seem to get on the site to download the new updated version. It says that this page is not available.
Ouuuuum
Uuugh, yeah, sorry about that. Wouldn't you know it, immediately after I updated this and another topic, I run into domain renewal hiccups. All good now!
I'm still experiencing some difficulty on getting to the website.
Ouuuuum
Really? Well, that's certainly annoying, it works fine for me. I'm sure it'll work for you eventually, lol. In the meantime, you can also get it from here, and even rate/review it if you'd like. http://beta.metroidconstruction.com/hack.php?id=307 Thanks for keeping interest even in the midst of my stumbly presentation here. :P
No problem, and the site works for my computer now, but I still got the file from the link that you provided, from the previous post.
