Took a break from Aegis today and churned out this puppy. Five rooms of grapple-related agony. You'll probably hate it.

Let me know if there's any bugs. My best time's 19 minutes, no savestates. Yes, there's a way through the third room, you just need to grapple that high block near the "dead end" wall until things click.

Edit: Okay, fixed the bug (it was pretty stupid) and we're good to go, just finished another clean runthrough. Let me know if it's still problematic. Savestates before the crash should work fine.

Edit: New version should be completely bug free (and features 10% more spikes!). I'm for cereal this time, guys.

hey
i got past the 3rd room (took me a while to get past that wall) but when i enter the door to go to the 4th room the game crashes.
Almost happy
Yeah at the 4th room (not counting the first) the game freezes.

But it was kinda fun, even though I don't really like grapple that much, and the new graphics/color scheme where awesome.
. . .
Game Freezing....

Other than that, this was lots of fun, hoping that you fix that so we can all finishing playing!
Loved the Warping thing!  Maybe "someone" should use that in a full hack.... *hint hint*
Great stuff, up until the freeze.

Durhh, a freeze. Strange, I ran through it. Hang on, I'll fix it...

Fixed, I think. Let me know if a scroll bug comes up, I had one once but couldn't recreate it. Check first post for new patch.
Dude I just played through this hack and let me say that OMFG i cannot wait until aegis!  your graphics and schemes just have an art to them.
Haven't finished it yet, but I'm liking this; harder than I like them, but enjoyable with some savestate use. The original didn't use the grapple much, so it's nice to see it get a workout. And the warps back to the start of the scene were a way better idea than instant death pits. =) And seeing Aegis's graphics in action is making me want to play it even more.
I noticed a bug, though; I fell into one of the doors near to the edge of the 3rd room, where it curves from going left to going down, and it caused some misaligned tiles as I started going back through the scene (or maybe the tiles were just drawn wrong, I didn't get to the tiles to check). I suspect the issue is that the doors weren't on the edge of the screen due to the way it scrolls at such spots.
Yeah, the same thing happened to me.  But i suppose it's probably hard to fix so its bearable.

The last room is the worst. You're gonna want to savestate like a madman, most likely. I did a no-savestate run and it went pretty smooth up until then.

If the fall causes scroll errors and they persist and mess things up, please let me know. I've had a couple places where it's strange right away but fixes itself; that's unavoidable given the design. If it's a permanent scroll glitch and things look messed up for more than a couple seconds, that can be fixed.

Technically, using spike blocks and these warp floors, someone could create a "terminal fall" effect like the Prime series uses. I'm surprised Nintendo's never actually done this themselves...
A: I believe that grapple is one of the items with the most potential in the original SM
B: I love grapple underwater
C: I beat this in 10 minutes
D: I beat this with 17%

All of the effing above. Awesome job. The 17% is interesting, but other than that, very satisfying. I found that the fifth room is much, much easier if you take off the gravity suit until the vertical climb. I did hate (and love) the leap of faith at the end though.

I have no idea what's up with the 17%. There's only three items in the hack, and I didn't mess with anything besides these, what, eight rooms? Who knows... 10 minutes, though, sheesh. Next thing I know someone's gonna TAS this.

I forced the gravity suit on players in the fourth room, didn't I? Kind of cruel of me. I haven't tried taking the suit off myself but I knew people probably would for the last room, and more power to you, that room's hell enough with water to lessen the strain. And of course all good hacks end with a "leap of faith" right? Mwuahaha.

I agree with you that grapple doesn't get enough love. Sadly it's one of the last items in Aegis, but it's quite crucial just the same. I was inspired by the old "conc-jump golf course" map from TFC, if anyone's played it. I think I'd been looking at the new hack list and saw the SM Grapple hack and the idea just clicked.

Actually, The original idea was a "grapple golf" where you build up momentum from a single swing and morphball as you release, aiming for a narrow hole. I found it was a bit too cruel though, even for a mini-hack. Maybe someone more sadistic wants to do that? Feel free to gut this mod for it if you want, the "missed the jump" concept is pretty easy to do if you just take a look at how I did things.

The good thing about aiming for a small hole is that you can hit fairly far above it and be ok.

I actually use this concept once in Soup, which coincidently has a ton of grapple goodness. Please note, I don't want this thread bombarded with questions or comments about Soup. This thread is about the awesome side-project Acheron created.

I've also realized the 17% thing. You start with 14 Etanks, then + Morph + Grapple + Gravity = 17. Any particular reason for starting with so much energy? Did the original have grapple under lava with no gravity?

The "hole" in this case was a door 1 tile wide, with a one tile wall below/above it. Hitting higher or lower meant restarting the shot. I even had "Par #" at the beginning of each "hole", which was pointless because you HAD to make it through a "par 3" room by using three grapple swings. I'd like to see someone else do it for a mini-hack. Actually, I should take more mini-hack vacations from my main hacks. (No, don't worry! No more until Aegis is done. ...Maybe one more.  grin new)

Good sleuthwork on the 17%. I knew it all along! I was just, uhm, testing you. Yes, yes. You hit it on the head--originally lava was going to be in one of the rooms (if you look in SMILE, lava gravity is something crazy like 0200). At least you won't die to spikes with 14 tanks.

Soup uses grapple a lot? I still need to play yours. I was a bit into Gravy but it starts off similar to SM IIRC, so I haven't yet finished it. Trying to put hack playing on hold until I finish Aegis, futile though such an effort may be.
Well, Gravy is similar to the original in the beginning, but things change later.

If the thing looked like this:  Wall
                                        Door
                                        Wall

you could still hit higher without penalty, or did you mean like this?
                                        Ceiling  Ceiling
                                                  Door
                                                  Wall

Gravity of 0200? Just out of curiousity, which room would've had the lava? (And by "just out of curiousity," I mean so I can make it have lava, then try it out.)

The real long room would have had lava, but I found I couldn't actually survive the trip more than once. I suppose I could have put down an energy refill though.

Well, that would certainly be effective. The really long room huh? Is that the one with gravity in it or the one before?

I'd also like to say that I love your tile design, and cannot wait for Aegis.

Glad you enjoy the tiling. TBH, the "space mountain" one is probably my favorite... except for all the areas no one's seen yet. :P

The long room was the one with gravity at the end, yeah.

Very nice work, Ach, especially for a mini-hack! I got 15 minutes and slightly sore fingers. I'm very much looking forward to Aegis if you can put this kind of quality into a simple side-project.

S_I, I've actually been using that 'warping floor' effect in the escape sequence for my full hack, too.

wow! this was great fun to play. very addicting.
i cant wait until Aegis. just dont ruin like redesign. laugh new

Sounds good!  But I woundn't use it myself, not if both you and Acheron86 are using it!  Buts it's a great idea!

how i can pass the water room?

Which water room? They're almost all pretty wet. Savestates are a big help.

Oh, right. Uhm, swing around to the dead end, then get creative with the grapple block there. If you can't figure it out,
try grappling it from the right side, between it and the wall
