well i have lots of experience with the midi format in general, so all i would need is a tool to convert them, someone to explain how to convert it, or someone to give it to that can convert it ( after i make them of course). Also, according to what your saying, i would also need a list of what instruments would be ok to use in all of the different areas of the game, or is it just the instruments used in the game as a whole?? Im in the middle of some downtime with my main band, so im kinda bored and ive been looking forward to this hack so i figured i might as well see if i could help, plus it would be awesome to hear my music in a hack of the greatest game ever made
I don't know about everyone else, but I'd much rather have a remix/original song from the metroid series. I just don't know if a band can just convey on a whim the specific Metroid-ey feelings that are in Metroid songs (unless you're a professional band?)
I wasnt saying anything about my band doing the music, i just said that im IN bands, I was more talking about me writing original stuff for the hack. Ive done soundtrack-styled stuff for some of my friends who are (wannabe ) filmmakers. I was just saying im in a band to show that i have experience with music creation. I am planning on doing stuff similiar to what youd hear in Super Metroid or Metroid Prime.

You can say that as many times as you want. But it will not make you more trust able.
It's not my call, It's not my hack. But it would be nice with a few samples to see what you could do befor asking you to whipe some thing up.
Also your spelling needs more skillzorzzzz (Not that I should say some thing)
Ok Acheron i signed up jst to ask you this How do you go about creating music for the SNES?? The reason i ask is that im in a couple of bands and i think id be able to help you by making ORIGINAL music for your hack. All i need to know is what type of music do you need ( .mid?? .wav??). All that i would ask is for a small credit to given to me in the game somewhere ( even if its at the very last line of the credits lol) for helping with the music. Well, just let me know, I would love to help with your music situation.
While I'm certainly open to contributed music, I should mention at the forefront that I'm a very picky person. That said, if you could put up a sample of what you can do and it sounds like it'll work, I'd be glad to include it in there, as I'd -much- prefer original songs to rehashes of anything already out there.
As far as format goes, no tools currently exist for easy conversion into the Super Metroid format. Making music in the engine requires turning notes into code that an ASM compiler can read. The process is difficult to explain, but basically I need the score, as I have to literally transpose each note of sheet music into code (thankfully I play a few instruments so I know how to read/write sheet music). I'd been using Anvil software to take midis and turn them into sheet music, so a midi format also works.
The limitations are the biggest frustration and are why I have been avoiding working on music until last: I've not yet found a way to introduce new "instruments" (sound samples) into the engine, so I have to work with what I've got, which is very limited. The best way I can explain it is that each "song" selected in SMILE only has 4-8 "instruments". Lower Norfair has some drums and a choir, Maridia has a piano and a xylophone, Crateria gets a couple horns and a bass. If a way to bring new instruments into a song stumbles into my lap I could have a -lot- more freedom... until that happens I have to work within those limits.
Still, it's not as bad as it sounds. Kejardon's website has more on the SM sound engine and lists the available instruments for most songs, so it's a good reference if making SM music is something anyone wants to seriously tackle. And as always I'm here (sort of) to answer any questions. As soon as things calm down in real life I'll be back on my A-game hacking... looks like I'm going to have a good month's vacation soon to wrap up all the loose ends with Aegis, so here's hoping.
Ok what ill do then is start making a bunch of midis and pm you a link to them as i finish them. Ill try to make at least 10 - 15, maybe even 20 or so, and you can go through them and see if theres anything you like. Give me a week or 2 to work on them ( my life is kinda hectic right now, as well) and ill get back to you with a few of them.
Embarrasing Fact: Power suit made by lowest bidder
If someone wants to seriously attempt a music hack (they have a score ready, and understand the tools and such required to hack the music into the game), I'll gladly help work with hacking instruments into the game as well. The hard part is really converting an instrument to the BRR format and sounding good, putting the BRR instrument in and getting the game to use it is relatively easy.
@ Acheron86: I seem to recall it being mentioned that once the patch is out - this topic will still be used to discuss what to do, how to play, where to go, etc. ...?
Or has there been enough 'chit-chat' about it to warrant a new topic?
I suppose I could wait to find out. When it does -for the 'Gameplay Help' directory- I'll probably have to link it to the page where all that begins.
Because a new person might open the topic and sift through many of the first pages to find very little help. Unless you're going to edit the title to say something to the affect of 'starts on page 16' -for example. :P

You have been working on this hack at the same time I had noticed that there was a new Walgreen's three blocks down the street from me (both started in January, and the shop's right near my school). The shop's almost done (now they got to put the shelves and computers up and stock them). I wonder if the hack or the shop will be finished first.
At one point or another I read this entire thread, maybe this had already come up (I'm not about to reread 16 pages): What sort of difficulty are we looking at for Aegis? I'm sure there's hard enough tricks for 100% and such, so I suppose I mean in general.
I'd like to see a new hack that defines itself not by difficulty, but by creativity. I like a real hard hack, but the replay value is low for me. I think its time for a creative & unique new hack with difficulty set at or around the original SM.
