I'm in the area where you get the spring ball, wave beam, and high jump.  Judging from a map I found on the internet, there is only one metroid in this area that I haven't beaten.  It's up in the upper-left corner, too high for me to reach with high jump and I can't use spider ball to get to it because there are spikes on the wall.  Am I supposed to be able to reach this metroid somehow at this point in the game?  I'm pretty sure I haven't triggered the earthquake needed to progress past this point, and this metroid is the only thing left in this area that I haven't gotten to yet.

You're supposed to be able to spiderball to that Metroid. That one will trigger the earthquake, I think, been quite a while since I played the game, but I know what Metroid you mean. You'll need to spiderball on the left wall, incase you tried from the right.

the left wall is the wall with the spikes.

If we're talking about the same Metroid, the one in the upper-left corner of the very big room where you can find springball, wave, highjump and varia suit. Then there's nothing that can stop you. Just go to the shaft left of that room, jump up on the top of that shaft, roll into a ball and springball/spiderball up the left wall in the big room up to the Metroid.

Oh, duh. :| I feel kinda stupid for not being able to figure that out.  Well, thanks. :) Now I can finally get to the next section.
