In a way this branches into the already-posted topic of whether or not Mama Brain is their leader, but it's disparate enough for its own topic. Therefore, are the Space Pirates individuals, or, given their insectile nature, are they possibly some sort of hive mind? Prime's Pirate Log imply they have some measure of individuality(enough so that they need to be reminded not to disobey), but are they truly individuals with indivdualistic goals and thoughts, or are they all kept in line by instinct/a higher power?
Thread title:
individual.
Otherwise, they wouldn't need so much technology, since all the info would be stored in the hive mind, not on computers etc.
What luck, there's french fry stuck in my beard.
I'd say they're individuals.  Expendable, but they're still individuals.
Not impossible
just highly unlikely
There's evidence in the scans in Prime to suggest that they're individuals.

That one about not keeping pets comes immediately to mind.

Syl, why did you just post a quote?  Is that your opinion in a nutshell or something?  Bah, nevermind..

Anyway, I reackon that they're individuals but the majority of them are probably incredibly stupid or something.  Another Pirate Data is  the one about the morph ball attempts.  I recognised a hint of irony and cynicism in the word "Wisely" when it said "Science team wisely decided to move on afterwards", a little something that would only seemingly be found in an intelligent mind.
Individuals.

Okay, you can stop that now.

I've always found that scan really funny.
I think pirates are individuals, not only because the kept pets but that there is no way they could have their kind of technology if they were to have a hive mentality.

Yes, they are definatly individuals. I'm writting a fan fic of a space piratre, and trust me, that would be completely impossible if they had a hive mind.

The only reason i think they dont revolt against Mother Brain or something is that she would probably kill them all, mentally, not physically. What a headachge that would be... :(

That scan also popped in my head when I read the topic. I agree with being individuals.

Also, the scan about the illegal intake of phazon or whatever, shows that sometimes they even disobey commands.

Hmm, the scan about asking for volunteers to hunt samus.

That's all I can think of.
Poor little space pirates :)
The hunter in metal knows no pity.

I forgot about that one, that's a funny mental image, space pirate drug addicts.
Samus Lauren
lol! Space pirates high off of phazon.  Laughing  That brings funny images.
I think it may be a mild mix.

they are individual enough to think for themselves, obey or disobey.

But they also work together in a sort of Hive form, with workers and fighters and leaders etc.

Probably a bit more like an ant farm than a hive mind but still...

I laughed so hard when I read that! That log is my favorite!
I think the pirates are pretty much like humans. So I think they are individuals.
keep in mind that it's the metroids in the metroid series that were based on the aliens, not the space pirates (their presence was virtually unseen in the original game), and i think there's no reason to believe the space pirates are a collective being other than 1) the above invalid comparison with the alien series and 2) the fact that they seem to have an exoskeleton like insects or aliens (xenomorphs).

Yeah, but from the end of Super Metroid we might be able to assume that Metroids are individuals to the extent of, say, a cat or a dog, in that they can care, an ability which puts them above insects and stuff.
yeah, didn't mean the metroids are the same things as aliens, just wanted to point out that the space pirates were not influenced by the alien series (as far as i can tell) the same way the metroids were (they're evil space beings that suck life out of you), but obviously the metroids are different from aliens. i guess we don't really have any group mind beings in the metroid series.

The X?
yeah, can definitely see that, actually. remember in noc when the first few are consumed by the newly varia suited samus, and then the others all over the station magically know to keep away? also, the computer several times refers to them "gathering" or doing something else as a group. the sa-x always seemed to act on its/their own to me, though. good thinking.

Thanks...  It was the mentioning of the Space Pirates that got me thinking about them, with that damned Pirate Gauntlet before Yakuza.  Pure Hell in my 1%...
Yup. Pirates are individuals, metroids pack animals.. er... creatures, and X hive mind. Or so it seems, at least.

Nice 3-month bump, by the way.
