One shall stand, one shall ball.
Quote from Opium:
You say police do not use simple communication as if you are in denial that the cops did just that for up to 13 minutes before the start of the video. The cops only did what they did because they had tried simple communication over and over to no effect.
Police do not communicate, they bark commands and vague accusations. On the rare occasion they do try actually talking things tend to go better. See the situation in Ferguson, things actually looked like they'd get better when the police started actually talking to people, and letting the people talk. Then it all went to shit when they came back with AR-15s and gas masks again. When they break the intimidation tactics back out it serves only to escalate things.
Quote from Opium:
Yes, they were non-violent, but you seem to think that force is only justified when someone is violent. That is incorrect. When someone has demonstrated repeatedly that they refuse to comply, then force is not only justified - it is necessary. Do you have a better idea?
It is neither justified nor necessary in this situation. Until it is revealed that the police had legitimate reason for not just writing the ticket and letting them go there's no reason they should have been asking anyone to exit the vehicle and they are well in the wrong as far as I am concerned. Not showing "Proper respect" is in no way justification for force as much as cops like to pretend otherwise.
Quote from Opium:
Their guns were drawn in an effort to PREVENT the need for force as it was meant to reinforce the fact that compliance was not voluntary. But in this case, simple communication was ignored repeatedly, then demands with guns drawn were also ignored, so what's left? Physical force is the only option left.
Even the military doesn't point a gun at a person to simply "prevent violence". You do not point a firearm at anyone or anything you don't intend to shoot, that's basic firearms handling. Cops ignore this all the time and it has ended badly plenty of times. Pointing a gun at someone is not a peace keeping action, it's an active threat to kill and once again makes rational response less likely. It's indefensible.
Quote from Opium:
It went down like that because you complied. Had you not complied, you would have been asked to step out of the car.
He complied because they never asked him to do anything unusual. The cops in the video got what they needed then apparently pulled guns. They don't need to do that for a traffic stop. The occupants of the vehicle, according to the information available, complied up to the point they needed to at a traffic stop. No reason to ask them to leave the vehicle.
