Okay, so the season finale is two parts. That's all I know about it. It's aired but I haven't seen it yet, haven't read anything about it, or anything. I don't even know the title of it when I post this, uh, post.
So, season four.
By and large, it's been a mostly forgettable season. It didn't start out shit but that was mostly thanks to one specific character. It quickly went downhill from there.
So here's short episode for episode opinions, summed up.
Princess Twilight Sparkle - Discord saves the episode, otherwise somewhat meh. Castle Mane-ia - Not too bad, really, but not great either. Daring Don't - Seriously the worst episode of the show ever. Flight to the Finish - Where season 4 got a good episode for the first time. Power Ponies - Also really fucking bad. Bats! - Not horrible but I didn't like it as much as some other people apparently did. Rarity Takes Manehattan - Eh, pretty stupid. Pinky Apple Pie - Dumb, dumb, dumb. Rainbow Falls - Not actually terrible. Three's a Crowd - This? This is a good episode. This is a legitimately really good episode. And Discord finally got a song, holy shit. Pinkie Pride - Might just about be the best episode of the season. It only has one piece of competition for the title. Simple Ways - Shit. Filli Vanilli - Dumb. Rarity learns the same lesson she did in Rarity Takes Manehattan. Twilight Time - Could have been worse, but largely forgettable. It Ain't Easy Being Breezies - Meh. Somepony to Watch Over Me - Applejack being a complete idiot does not a good episode make. Maud Pie - This, right here, is the other best episode of the season. Maud is a great character. For Whom the Sweetie Belle Tolls - The plot is "Sweetie Belle is an idiot". Leap of Faith - Not bad, actually. Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3 - Stupid. Trade Ya - Stupid. Inspiration Manifestation - Stupid. Rarity learns the same lesson for the third time in one season. Equestria Games - Episode of wasted potential. So, stupid.
So that's, uh, six episodes I'm ready to call legitimately good this season. I have low expectations for the finale.
Also finale theory that I hope doesn't happen but yeah I don't put anything past Hasbro:
They open the box and they all become ~alicorn princesses~. Alternatively and slightly less stupid, seeing as how Hasbro seems to have been pushing a rainbow theme for everything everyone becomes all rainbowed up somehow. Either way the odds are about one in one that it's something that'll make me just stare at the screen in disbelief.
It seems likely that I'll watch finale part one today and part two tomorrow.
Okay so part one has been watched. The title didn't instill any hope in me, and it didn't convince me at the start, Applejack being on fire notwithstanding.
And then? Things kicked into high gear.
There's a new villain. And with new, I mean holy shit it's Tirek. You know, the villain in Rescue from Midnight Castle. The oldest reference they could possibly make and they made it. They even referenced a Scorpan, who was also a character in that. Also, Discord proves again that he's best character.
So this actually has promise. And if the things said before To Be Continued are true then I am going to pray so much for a Certain Thing to happen. (it probably won't because fuck you that's why)
Whelp. Watched part two and I'm not even sure anymore.
At least it wasn't the completely retarded turnout but that would at least have looked less ridiculous because all I was reminded of was bad fancomic recolours.
So season four ends with six good episodes out of twenty-six, to compare with season three's four good out of thirteen. This show has lost it. Adventure Time has long since surpassed it. Maybe I should start a thread for that.
Adventure Time was always better tbh. Seasons 1 and 2 of MLP were good fun but Adventure Time has pretty consistently pushed itself to be more interesting/crazy. It also never let the weird part of its fanbase totally highjack it.
So I actually got around to watching season five. Originally, I had planned on waiting until the season was done. Considered picking up Steven Universe. Decided that no fuck it I might as well catch up. That was about a week ago and I'm caught up now. Turns out I did pick a decent time for it since it's on mid-season break.
It's been surprisingly not terrible. The opening two-parter introduced the season's overarcing thing, which seemed like it could get stupid but there's only been one other episode with it so far, and it was actually a good episode.
I mean, it's nothing like the early seasons when it comes to quality - but it's had its moments. Mostly relating to Pinkie, really.
Wrote down some comments for each episode so I'm just going to paste them here unedited.
S05E01&02: Not actually terrible, but what the fuck. S05E03: Surprisingly decent, despite what it looked like at the start. Except why were there no books, gaaaah. Just barely not an Actual Good Episode™. I'd trust Rarity to be an interior decorator... the others, not so much. S05E04: LUNA UP IN THIS BITCH. Episode without Twilight and I'm just about ready to call this an Actual Good Episode™. S05E05: RD is an idiot. Handful of funny moments. A fucking Game of Thrones reference in ponies. WINTER NUKE. RD slippers lol. PINKIE. Fluttershy is a stone cold motherfucker. S05E06: Not bad, actually. Small improvement, but not Actual Good Episode™. S05E07: Oh my god Discord and Maud in one episode. Minus for a Smooze and not one character uttering the phrase "nothing can stop the Smooze" (it was referenced though). Maud has two lines and they're both the best lines. S05E08: PINKIEDASH EPISODE okay not really but still. Yeah, that was a good one. Actual Good™. S05E09: Blatant fan pandering, the episode! Far, far too much of it. Hell, it was literally a fanfiction episode. Not a good one. S05E10: Spike is an idiot. Again. S05E11: Pinkie's parts were amusing, but the episode felt a bit eh anyway. PINKIE PHYSICS. S05E12: Surprisingly not bad, despite the opening. S05E13: Eh. Didn't get as bad as I feared at the start but still kind of a whimper with a VERY rushed ending. One of those plots that felt like it should have been a two-parter.
Edit: Oh and I watched Rainbow Rocks at some point too, it had some moments and gags I appreciated - especially two of them - but in general a pretty meh movie. I'll say that the stinger made me legitimately want to see how they'll follow it up aaaaand there's a new movie coming in September and it's probably going to be terrible anyway
I feel like I just can't bring myself to get back into this show. The minute they started catering to the unexpected demographic that sprang up, the show lost the charm initially responsible for the phenomenon.
Also, I'm not sure if it's a coincidence or not, but I stopped caring about FiM about the same time Sherclop stopped caring about FiW.
Yeah, Turtle, I feel the exact same way. It was really fun, but then it just got way way too full of itself and the self-pandering was obnoxious.
However Sherclop kind of come out of the woodwork and uploaded this somewhat recently:
But MLP is definitely past its prime, it was a god damn phenominal ride while it lasted, but there's nothing it can offer for me now. I tried to watch the more recent stuff, and I just couldn't connect to it anymore.
and dear lord KennyMan stay away from Stephen Universe. It's just not good for you man.
I can barely even call it that I'm being into it anymore, but I watched it anyway.
And, like, it's not shit, it's just mostly... bland. It's lost most of the magic (pun intended) of the first two seasons. The episodes still have certain gags that are legitimately good and funny, but on the whole it's... eh.
If you're tired about catering to the fanbase, don't watch Slice of Life. That was an entire episode of making various fan memes canon.
I can't recommend watching season 5 in general, but I needed something to watch while eating. (and now I'm watching SU instead. Rebecca Sugar worked on Adventure Time and Adventure Time is basically the best cartoon right now so I'll give it a bunch of episodes at least)
However Sherclop kind of come out of the woodwork and uploaded this somewhat recently:
The fact that their most recent FiW stuff is still over a year old combined with their confirmation that they don't really have interest in working on it anymore is a bit sad. That, and their last FiW "regular" episode was a big middle finger to a specific fanfic rather than a parody of the show itself.
Yeah I never heard of that fanfic until now. I don't really think it was a big middle finger to it, just a playful parody. Kinda like they do to FiM to begin with
Maybe so, though my issue either way is that it caused the episode to go from parodying the actual show which everyone had seen to parodying a specific fan work that many had never heard of. I have to wonder whether they lost their interest in FiW halfway through that episode and that's why it shifted so suddenly and permanently.
yeah probably. i mean you can only do so much of one thing before it gets boring or gets stale. maybe they tried to spice it up to see if it worked but it didnt really but it was too late to go back
We're like the mormons. We're gonna trick people into thinking this is just a casual social topic and then introduce them to our lord and savior princess celestia
I set up my new tv and it's fucking damaged. It works though. Conflicted as to whether or not to send it back. The housing is cracked on the back. Now how will I watch hundreds upon hundreds of hours of My Little Pony like I had previously planned to?
