A random question:

Several years ago I remember seeing a suitless run (not sure if it was max% or just activate as many Chozo statues as possible) of this hack on YouTube. I remember it having a pretty interesting route, including going to Maridia I think (or was it the watery area of Crateria?) to obtain 10 Super Missiles and 11 Power Bombs before Norfair.

However, when I searched recently, I couldn't find it. I thought this forum seemed like a good place to ask-- does anyone here know whether it's still possible to see this run? (I have a feeling the videos have been removed for some reason...)

Also, an unrelated question-- does anyone know the formula for how the item percentage is calculated?
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
The original thread was here.  The run was by FirestormXXL.

Unfortunately, it looks like he's removed all of his videos. Sad
I decided to give Redesign another go (so this will be my 3rd playthrough overall) except this time I'm trying to play it without using savestates unless I get really frustrated with an area. Now, with that in mind, I have just one thing to say:

Norfair sucks... Evil or Very Mad
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Post Grapple is the bitch of this hack.  Without saves, it's the real Hell's Run of the game.  After that, it's not much tougher than the original game.
Yeah, that was where I had the most issues and the one real place I resorted to using savestates, but none during the actual climb out of the acid room, just before and after so I didn't have to do the setup stuff or make the climb again. I'd thought about using them in other places but haven't really, which is saying something since I tend to go nuts with them while playing hacks simply because I don't know what the creator will have around the next corner.

But Norfair as a whole is reminding me why I still have mixed opinions of this game even if I'm enjoying it a heck of a lot more than my first run when everything was new to me. A lot of the smaller design elements that I disagree with, while OK to get through on their own, feel like they add up down there and drag down the fun I have in most other places in the game. The one that's gotten me the most this time though is the unforgiving falls you can have in every other room, where you fall into the lava/acid and either can't get out at all or else it requires a long trek to the one place you can climb out, and by then I'm either dead or close to it.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Yup.  As I said, Norfair is a bitch.  Even Drewseph has mentioned a few times that if he were to redo this hack, then he'd amend that section.  It's also true when I mentioned that after it the whole game opens up.  You get more beams, Hi-Jump, and the Gravity Suit soon afterward, and the difficulty drops right down to a more balanced level.
True, I'm not really fearing the rest of it as much now that I think about it, maybe Maridia a little since both times I've had some trouble navigating through there at points. (I hate the sand...) Forgot though that I needed Speed Booster to fully explore Crateria and am now sitting back at the ship and realizing I need to go ALL THE WAY BACK DOWN to get it. Might be the reason why I stopped playing last night other than the fact that I have something I'm doing all day so I had to get to sleep early.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Yeah, Maridia can be a little overwhelming, but once you've sussed it, it's not so bad.  Without trying to give too much away, it's basically: Head to the far left to get Space Jump, and then back to the right for Draygon.
Yeah, OK, it's coming back to me now. It's mainly traveling through the sandy areas and getting through the falling sand that slows me down, but I should be better at it now that I've done it a few times.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
For the sand thing, it seems to be 50/50 whether people struggle with getting stuck in it.  When I fall in I just keep jumping, while holding up and / or the aim up button.  It doesn't mean I jump out of it properly each time (as in full height), but it at least keeps me on the surface.  Give it a try, and see if it helps. Very Happy
You know, funny enough I tried using that method and had MUCH more success than I ever remember the first two times playing this. Marida wasn't nearly as much of an obstacle to me as it was the first time around where I also had trouble with wall jumps and space jumping through the sand. Granted, space jumps are still an issue some of the time, but once I realized the best way to get through the falling sand was to let go of the directional buttons when in motion to be able to jump again it was smooth sailing up that shaft to get to Draygon.

God, I forgot just how much I hate the first part of the escape sequence, specifically the part in Tourian. I do love the idea of blasting out of a Pirate base, since it definitely feels more like a real base than the Tourian in the original Super, but to me the execution of the escape is quite tedious and annoying in most cases. Now, I love the Morph Ball, don't get me wrong, but a lot of it feels like it's simply there to pad the escape and make it more complicated than it needs to be. And then there's the further torment of having Metroids fly in when you are actually starting to get somewhere and kill you before you can do anything at all.

I've decided that I seem to have a love/hate relationship with this game after almost finishing it three times. Just when I get to the point where I remember why I consider it one of the best hacks out there even to this day, some random element comes swooping in to utterly destroy that feeling, leaving me completely frustrated and causing me to lose any good feelings I may have had a moment before. Overall it's probably in my top three along with Eris and Ice Metal, but all of them have something that keeps them from being the "perfect" hack as far as what I'm looking for in a Metroid experience.

Edit: Got through it. 07:02 with 63.5%, both of which are my personal best.
Yoshi is back
Lame.
A new version is coming...
...or is it?    *eyeroll*
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Yup.  Drewseph has been working on it for quite a while now.  I think his other project got dropped, however, as his main coder dropped out.
Other project?

...But it's very exciting to hear about Redesign.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
It was called Endless Attack.
defrag in progress
New version? Any info, what he likes to change?
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I know he's tinkered with the bomb-jump timing.  The bitch area just after Grapple will no doubt be tweaked.  Other than that, I haven't seen an actual list of changes yet.
I know I am late to the party but I am in the middle of Redesign and wanted to say thank you to everyone involved in the making.  It is a work of art and something that will be admired for years to come.  I read the entire 65 pages of posts last night dating back to 2002!  Near the end of the discusion some were talking about a new game.  Is this still in the works?  I would be glad to start a "Motivation Fund" for Drewseph to give him added incentive to make another one.  Aware they take years to make but I am sure we could raise a significant amount in the community.  If anyone could fill me in, would be appreciated.  Anyway, just wanted to say still in 2012 I found, installed, and am loving this redesign.  I will recomend it to all I come across.  Well done sirs, well done.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Yes, the Axeil Edition of Redesign is still being worked on.  Endless Attack is not, as I mentioned above.
Quietus,
I am struggling in my attempt to retrieve the screw attack.  I dont want to spoil for others so I will be  discreet.  I know where it is but am struggling getting samus to shinespark during a fall.  I am holding run and pressing jump and left but failing miserably.  Any advice?
Come back with space jump
