Oi.  I'm practicing IBJ in the room just before the Norfair elevator.  I got upward one full screen, then stalled out.  Now I can't seem to get my rhythm back.  >_<

Edit: Ooh.  I've made it all the way up to the door back to the giant sidehopper hallway three or four times now.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Did you check my vid?  Mucho IBJing. Razz  The tricky part is getting started, just like it was in the original.  Once you get going, I think it's actually pretty easy, as it's just laying a bomb at the peak of each jump, so you don't have to have as much rhythm, as you can do it strictly on visuals.
I don't have a whole lot of luck judging the timing by visuals, so I've been trying to get a rhythm going based on the sound of the bombs going off... it works okay, but I still can't do it consistently.

I'm trying to get to Crocomire at present, I think.  I keep screwing up the HBJs in the morph ball tunnel.
What'd you say?

Lay a bomb, tap left slightly, wait for the explosion, hold left.

If you're on about the bits in Norfair, then think yourself lucky you're playing a later version of Redesign, as that part was apparently hell in the early versions. Shocked

It was, I remember I kept getting to frustrated to play due to Norfair.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
It's easily the toughest area, and by quite some distance.  It seems like all of the tough sections, or sections with insta-death, are there, and in fairly quick succession.  It's worth percevering, though, because after you're done there, the game really opens up, and the difficulty becomes a lot more balanced, and focuses on exploration. Very Happy

I actually remember that from the early version... I don't even know how in the flying fuck I got to Crocomire.  I think I got lucky and made the game glitch me onto the other side after falling in the lava 3,511,008 times.

Edit: Well, I got Crocomire dealt with, and managed to hunt down the Grapple Beam, another E-tank, a couple missile expansions and another power bomb before returning to the Hell's Run save station in Brinstar (I was getting sick of Norfair).  Passed the High Jump on the way, but I don't remember what all you need to get it (come to think of it, I don't really know the item order at all in SMR)... taking a break presently because A) I don't remember where I need to go next, and B) after all the fighting with the grapple beam in Norfair I felt like I was gonna pull my hair out by the time I got back to the upper area. >_>

The section immediately after the Grapple's acquisition is the hardest part of the entire game.  Pretty mcuh every mistake is an insta-death.  Once you've got Grapple, you should be looking for the Speed Booster, and then the Hi-Jump boots, which will grant you access to North-Eastern Crateria, and eventually into Maridia.  You can acquire a couple of Beam upgrades before you do so as well, but they aren't required.

Wave beam isn't required ???
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
For the game, I think it is, but not to just get into the next area.
I could have sworn that you needed grapple to get speed, and speed gets you to wave (barring a crazy IBJ), which is required to advance.

That's two crazy IBJ's, as you have to clear the blocks at the top before climbing again.  If they don't respawn that is...  You can also freeze the hopping enemy in the room below, and use it as a mobile ledge, but it's too much hassle to bother with.  As for Maridia entry, I'm fairly sure you can get into north-eastern Crateria as soon as you have Super Missiles, as you can IBJ up to the ledge, and open the door.  I just don't think you can pass the speed blocks there without the other equipment first.  I know that Wave Beam is required if you come in the other end (up near the Bomb Torizo's room), but you cannot get far, as you do not have the Gravity suit, and cannot break the blocks in the long sloped room.
I'm kinda going crazy trying to remember exactly where wave is required (or at least meant to be required) in the game.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I always get it anyway, so I'm not really thinking in those terms.  There no doubt are some later on.  I find it very hard to believe that there aren't any.
Oh yeah, I remember that IBJ up to the Wave Beam.  I think Drewseph did it in his TAS.

Well, if the Speed Booster is next, I guess I get to see how many times I die in the escape sequence this time.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Just be careful with your jumps, and you'll be fine.  One or two wall-jumps at the top can help, but they're not necessary.
OMG FLAN!!!!!!!
I don't really worry about whether or not I'll need wave later in the game. If I can get it, I'll get it, regardless of whether I need it or not. It adds a ton of firepower to your attacks, and you can hit enemies from behind cover.
I'm positive that you do need it, I just can't remember exactly where it is required.
Armor Guardian
Ignoring the gate-glitch, it's required to get to the East Norfair Guardian. Other than that, I don't think there are any other points where it's needed.
Gate-glitch?
What'd you say?

Oh, right.  Drewseph abused -that- in his speed run too.
What'd you say?
I've never been able to pull that trick off.  Evil or Very Mad
Sometimes I can do it in the first try, sometimes I can't do it at all.
