Hi guys, I've been lurking for a while but never joined till today cause I have a quick question (and maybe if I improve at Metroid games some I'll be able to post more) :)

I'd really like to play some of these hacks, but the ROM I have just doesn't run any of them. I know certain hacks only work with certain ROMs, and SM ROMs seem to be pretty much impossible to find these days, so am I just out of luck?

Thanks gents.
Thread title:
You may have the PAL version. Does the name say (E) at the end? You'll need the JU (Japanese/US) version to play the hacks. There might also be header issues; any particular patch can only work for headered or unheadered, though major hacks generally provide a separate patch for both. You can tell if your ROM is headered or unheadered by it's size; 3072 KB if it's unheadered, 3,073 if it's headered. Changing this is easy enough; SMILE can add or remove a header, and it's easy to remove one yourself with a hew editor by simply deleting the first 512 bytes of the file.
You'll need to find the ROM on your own, though.
Yeah, I definitely have the PAL ROM (German and French subtitles. heh.), so it's not a header issue unfortunately. That's disappointing.

But I appreciate the info. Thanks a lot :-)
It's harder to find ROMs than it used to be, but it's still not that hard.  The google is your friend.
Yep, I found a headered Super Metroid(JU)(!).smc easily so I guess that's the one I'm loking for, right? I got SMILE to remove the header, that's cool. I'm excited. I figured it'd be a pain, but I was pleasantly surprised.

It may have been better to just copy the file to another folder, then take the header off on the other file...  For those times when a patch is for headered...  or not.  Very Happy

I've got a folder for SM_Backups, then SM_Headered & SM Un-Headered.

Whenever I DL a new patch; I right click and drag a copy to another folder.

I have a SM_Aegis and a SM_Cliffhanger folder both with unheadered SM ROMs in them - waiting on my computer.  :P
Hated by all
I mainly get a file in the WinRAR ZIP archive, so I pull out a good copy every time. Four copies of it on SMILE (Two each on 1.23 and 1.32), and a folder with the IPS patches and patched ROMs. I tend to use SNES 9X Version 1.51 or 1.43-Improvement 12 Beta 8, since they save the memory in a dedicated folder (don't want to look through 20 files of patched stuff just to find my saves and videos).

While of course I hate headers and think they are the devil, I still intend to release patches for either variation.
I pulled all the files off my transflash card and got it all working last night. And yeah, my \games\ folder now has a \Super Metroid\ folder which has a bunch of other folders with patches, copies of the NTCS ROM (cause I wanna mess with SMILE a little bit to edit the game, too), and stuff like that. It got pretty elaborate...
