It seems cool, but it sounds like one sequence is being forced on the player with no option of breaking... (especially with the grapple rails) But I hope it would turn out otherwise...
Thread title:
Don't put too much faith in IGN figureing out anything outside of what they are told. They comonly mark games down for not having features that are actually there if you read the manual, play more than once, or just try actually reading what the stuff in the menu says. Things like alternate routes, unlockables, and boss tactics beyond spaming all your guns escape them.

-Edit- Besides, if you mean sequence breaking, you cant ever really sequence break the opening segments anyway.
1. The earliest areas of Prime and Echoes were linear (save for single room offshoots).
2. The Echoes demo (on the Bonus Disk and elsewhere) was linearized and not indicative of the final areas.

A lot of places have reviews up, and they are all extremely positive!

Have you never played the beginning of Super Metroid? O_o

Edit: "The artistic presentation of the space stations, craft and planets that make up the universe is very impressive, seemingly more on par with the original Prime than its purple-drenched sequel."

HUZZAH!

Edit x2: "The camera pans in on the blonde-haired, blue-eyed beauty..."

I want to see as little of Samus The Human in this game as possible. Her annoying grunts when she's attacked are bad enough, and both their frequency and volume has been increased this time around.
my umbrella goes directly to Bankai
you can't even SB the beginning of mp1 and that game was SB heaven.

ign complains about stuff that are actually good thing for me often.
they present real issues where everyone agrees not that regularly.

Maybe Retro can be encouraged , before it's released, to turn down the volume on that impeding violation of the game's acoustics
Besides her shield is taking the pain, not her....

.. i mean ok she is wired to the suit, but her CNS to the shield's damage? The Chozo decided to give her the pain that might distract her from the battle at a key millisecond? Nah. (huh it's prolly there to let the player know something( besides the sound of the shield + the screen flash) that energy is being lost)
red chamber dream
I think it's supposed to be more of a grunt out of frustration than due to pain, as it doesn't sound very, well, pained.

We never needed it in the other Prime games, though.

i don't mean it was needed. Just seems retro thought it was needed. Or maybe cute. O maybe they are thrilling in reminding that she is a woman. "i'm a lady hear me grunt'
I really like the detail of hearing her grunt.  its like getting the wind slightly knocked out of you.  she gets hit out of the way and thrown into a wall, no pain, but the air in her lungs have to go somewhere.

seriously though, whats wrong with hearing her sounds?

Exactly what I was thinking.
I'm a little annoyed at it, too. And also that they're seriously overdoing the whole visor-reflecting-face thing. It was awesome in the first game because, depending on how you play, you might see it once or twice on your first playthrough and it'd be like "Oh wow, cool".

But now you apparently stare at her giant face reflection every time you switch to the scan visor? Why? That'll grow tedious after a while. Or you'll learn to completely ignore it in which place they'd be better off not having it there in the first place. I mean, first of all, it doesn't make sense to have the inside of a visor be reflective. That just hinders visibility. Second, it reinforces the sensation that you're controlling a character, instead of immersing you in the world AS that character. Which I believe is what the whole awesome visor detail was meant to do in the first place. Make you feel like you're in that helmet, yourself. Having a girl stare at you every time something flashes nearby either breaks immersion, or causes you to believe you're actually a girl... Either of which are undesirable from a game.

The grunting can have the same effect. Even more, it gets really annoying. I never liked hearing it in the first two games, and now it apparently happens every time you take damage? I hope you can mute her somehow...

Rox hit the nail on the head. I think Retro is trying to show off the fact that Samus is a girl or something, but it comes off as just stupid to me. I like to think it's me in the game when I'm playing an FPS/FPA.
Bananas GOOD, Kremlings BAD
BUT, they will most likely have the option to disable to reflection, just as they had all those visor options in the previous games.
(user is banned)
the grunting in prime 1 was fine.  however, if they've increased it, i know it'll get annoying.

the grunts from MC in halo are fine too, and they let you know how you're doing.  however, that only happens when he has no sheild left.  Grunts should not happen when your whole life support is based on your shields.  IMO the only time we should be hearing it is when you fall from too high a  height.

also, a reflection on your visor is stupid.  why would someone with incredibly advanced equipment have a reflection on their visor?  in reality, it really should be like a one-way mirror, with samus looking out at the world, while they cant look in.  reflection into your own eyes just shouldnt happen.
The one issue I have with Corruption is with the overdone Samus face.  Why does she so overly gussied up?  To push the visibility of this, they've lowered the opacity in the visor and added reflection when scanning.  What for?  I'm with Arkarian on the issue.

Jackie's impressions are up (she's the on-stage demo person).

A spoiler quote in that article relating to the recent discussion:
It was also overheard that Samus will also, for the first time in the Metroid series, be playable in the famed Zero Suit.

How the heck is that going to work out? And wouldn't it be the second time?
red chamber dream
Think he meant in the Prime series. Which I wouldn't mind one bit-- not like you ever see the suit anyway.

Quote from SkippyJr:

I agree, that really sucks. Considering she's a bounty hunter, Samus should, if anything, cut her hair as short as possible to keep cooler (yet look dirty, rugged, and sweaty at all times anyway) and wear no makeup whatsoever. But like I said before, it's not as if we have to look at her all that much. If they give Samus a personality and start adding huge, dramatic cutscenes with lots of dialogue, I'll probably stop playing Metroid altogether.

Also, I noticed that the amount of icons and other stuff on the HUD seems to have increased, and the jagged lines on the side jut out pretty significantly into the players field of view. Anyone else find that kind of annoying?

I feel the exact opposite. They don't show the danger warning thing, the visors, the beams (obviously), and the whole left and right sides have nothing in them. I like the new HUD. Trust me, you won't notice the HUD jutting out when you actually play the game.

When MC grunts he is in serious tsunami. It makes one very careful or more alert.
Grunting is nothing new, and personally I'd rather hear a variable grunt sound than an unidentifiable hissing noise that appears to come from nowhere.

I also think that face reflecting is cool, and overdoing it can look a little less slick; nonetheless it's more immersive, since the fact that you're playing as a real person is more reinforced. Casual players thought that Samus was a robot- I don't really mind a few reminders here and there that you're more than just a random robot with a few aliens to shoot, as Metroid is WAY more complicated than that.

That said, you all are taking this way too seriously.
The face thing is lame; the cool thing about it in the original was that it was so minimal.

Grunting is awesome, but the very best sounds Samus has ever made are the ones in the original Smash Brothers. "WONK!" when she dies or taunts, and "FWHOOSCH" when she does her forward smash.
red chamber dream
Seriously? That "wonk" sound makes it seem like she's a robot or something and is part of the reason why some Prime players new to Metroid also thought so.

Quote from rekameohs:

They're obviously going to be filled once you get more items, though.
If people think she's a robut, that's their problem... besides, if the designers really want the player to hear Samus' voice and tell that she's a woman, they should have her yell "WONK!" whenever she gets hit.

Edit:

I feel she is so at one with her suit and training, that her gender matters not, when it comes to actually doing her thing.Unless the game brings her childhood into cutscenes or whatnot, in which case the new player will discover soon enough.
But okay, good to understand that she ain't a Bot. But also, it's the player's experience and if they make up their own story for the character, and it works, hurray. Personally, I'd rather not hear her grunt Every bleeping time she gets scathed though. But whatever i'm gonna play the bloody thing anyway.
