I've been lingering for quite some time, but I thought I should go ahead and post now. I've put together a run that proves that it's possible to beat the game with just the Maru Mari. It's emulated of course, and it's entirely based on Red Scarlet's 2 item run, but I don't stop to get the ice beam. Man those metroids are fast. Just FYI.
Thread title:
I want to see this.
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
Nice.  My 2 item run's purpose will be accomplished then.  :o

how can you get one item. to pass into tourian you need missles.
and to get to ridley you need maru mari bombs

You get missiles from Kraid and Ridley. As for the bombs, you use glitchy tactics.

Watch my 2 item vid to see how, and then watch the 1 item to see what zany dodging tactics you have to do to get to Mother Brain.
Well, I haven't translated it yet into video, but I submitted it to bisqwit's speed run site, where, if accepted, it should be an avi. But if anyone out there has the famtasia emulator, have a look-see:

Not console friendly (Kraid is not this easy!)
If any of you would like to see the finished product of the one item run, it got accepted - just not mine. I submitted a few versions of the run that got rejected for technical issues, and this one by Zoizite came out damn near perfect.

http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/movies.cgi?systemid=1 (scroll down to the Metroid runs)

All the details are there, but remember this is an emulated run with slow-downs, re-records, etc. It certainly is fun to watch Samus blaze through Tourian with nothing but a few missiles and the Maru Mari (lots of backing off the metroids with the basic gun and such)
Agh! I can't get Famtasia to work, and my campus throttles BitTorrent... can anyone gmail the 1-item run to me?

i did a 2-item run(with one useless item)so im sure i can pull this off

It's not on famtasia - the emulator is FCE Ultra. You can nab this from bisqwit's site or from mine at www.nintendorecords.com

I'd rather see an imperfect one than their 'perfection'.
Ah - the age old battle. Try to remember that these runs aren't humanly possible - they're just for entertainment. So, their take is basically, "You have the tools to make a perfect run - it had better be perfect." vs. "You're doing it on a console - I can't believe you pulled it off."

A 1-item (or even 2-item) run on a console would be damn near impossible to achieve, thus incredible. Pros and cons to each situation, I suppose.

The tool-assisted time attackers are certainly knowledged and skillful, just from a different perspective. 100 re-records on a single jump can take some patience and these are the details to which they pay attention.

However, with regards to the "technical demonstration" aspect of the run, one would certainly learn more from your run.

I'm looking forward to the mini-boss-less run I think I'll see in the next couple of weeks. Never before has this been attempted.

I second that. It's weird, but I feel dirty somehow after watching a tool assisted run.
I'd certainly be impressed with this one in any form if it wasn't tool-assisted, but I'm not sure that's possible.
