I had these in my mind for a minute.

Samus In Mushroom Kingdom:
A Few levels from Super Mario World, or SMB3. Vertical Doors would be pipes, Goombas would be Zoomers, and Health Points would be Coins.

Zebes; Previsited:
Re-make the First Metroid Game with SM graphics. Only Kraid and Ridley would be in the game, of course.

Feel free to post your own ideas.
Thread title:
First I will give my opinion on your hack ideas:

Mushroom Kingdom: You make me want to cry. ;( Haven't people done enough with the Mario series and SMW? Is the need so bad we have to bring Mario stuff into other games?

Metroid 1 Remake: OLD'D x 8000. This is the first thought that pops into someone's brain when they get a copy of SMILE.

as for my hack idea, which you are free to rip apart as I have done:

(I've been toying with this idea for over a year now, I've just been doing other things.)

-Set after Super Metroid (Metroid 3)
-Metroid Fusion (Metroid 4) need not factor into this plot. It could happen before or after

-Basically, A distress signal is received from a military research ship in deep space. Samus intercepts it and determines that space pirates are the perpetrators (as usual).

-Samus, who has been monitoring and waiting for the pirates to make a move for months, seizes the opportunity and flies off to
investigate the distressed vessel.

-When she arrives it appears that all members of the crew have been murdered. The magnetic floors are down, bodies drift eerily around the interior of the craft. (Hence it's zero gravity, and you could use Mode 7 to create a fully rotatable space ship experience).

-Though the crew was slaughtered, the ship itself is largely intact. Looking around the computer systems, Samus learns that the scientists were studying an ancient derelect space station - one that had crashed into and merged into a nearby planet.

-The space station, it turns out, was of Chozo origin (surprised?), but unbeknownst to the researchers, who had only researched it from the exterior, it was fortress used for weapons development. Hence the design was more or less of more transient clan of Chozo (probably a more violent, yet still advanced clan of the Chozo).

-The space pirates, with their neverending desire to rip off weapons from other races, smelled a big prize, and had attacked the Military ship in order to buy time before a larger military force could arrive. The have already set up a makeshift base inside. What could they be looking for? (guess)

-So yeah it has a similar plot structure to SM, which would make it fairly straightforward to edit. Though some modifications would be needed, such as the mode 7 ship thing. Plus recoding of things like cinema in the intro.

-Other details, like Bosses and how you get in and out of the space station and the military research ship. (blowing both of them up would just seem too cliché.) Powerup considerations are also key. A weapons research facility should have some nice goodies, but also some pretty clever traps (maybe some newly programmed types of Torizo). Plus, having the station embedded in the planet could allow for some side exploration and different areas. And with the station being of Chozo design, you have a lot of potential to make it more organic or extravagant (unlike the boring space station in Metroid Fusion). The hope is to create something more dark and more horrific than Super Metroid, and still keep it fun.
Well, I got a technical hack idea that would be a serious, serious topic :
Say : Mother Brains does less than 99 damage when it attacks you; when you fight him in its first form, you can damage him with charge beam. Is it what you need to complete it in less than 14%?
A real low% of SM, with everything needed to have one missile reserve, one super missile reserve, no energy tank etc. so a speedrun of it would be really exciting, that is what I am talking about.
Of course, I doubt that this would be on something like Internet Archive or SDA, but why not make some demonstration? What do you think? A hack of it would be made quick, and well, I would like to participate, so I can make the demo.
Right, I don't really have an argument, but just say if you would be okay for it.
So uh.... do you mean just tweaking the original so that it is possible to beat with a lower %? Or do you mean making a custom made hack with a new map that is designed to be beatable on a low %?

Either way, I think it's an interesting idea, but I'm sure some people would be skeptical, since it might cause confusion with legit low % runs.

Also, your comment on how a low % speed run would be exciting puzzles me. You have played a low % game, right? It's incredibly tedious, for example Ridley takes like 300 charge beam shots. To make a low % speed run exciting you'd have to make the game incredibly easy.
Yes, it is gonna be the original game, as original as possible, and yeah, right, I knew that people would be skeptical, and I know boss fights would be, somehow, boring (at least long), considering the fact that I don't want to make it easy.
But of course there is always a way to do it entertaining, since there will only be 99 HP for Samus.
Yeah I was wrong about the missiles, but I thought it was really possible to finish the game with one s.missile tank so I was disapointed when, in all low% SM speedruns, I saw everybody take it .
For an example I saw Smokey's 14%, and at a moment, when he's gonna acquire the gravity suit, he takes 90 damage to get to the chozo without the grapple beam. I thought : "Damn, it would not be the same thing if it was with 99HP!". It's an example, I have seen plenty other ones, but well I hope you get the idea.
EDIT : WHAT!? 300 charge shots? Wow, that wouldn't be advisalbe at all... what to do? I would still not make it easier.
Wow I just got a lame/crazy idea.
How about a lava pit under you and you have to walljump during the entire boss battle. *cough*
Except that you can't restart a spin jump in mid jump.
Yeah right.
Maybe if it can be fixed on the hack's physics, that would be possible, but anyway if I had to do it, I would certainly destroy my finger's bone...
Quote from SonicandTails218:

That's when you fall into the lava and take damage.. then try and kick off the wall again to get to the boss. >>
Man, best idea ever!
Kraid's Palette to Blue, and an underwater Kraid Fight!
No, I wouldn't do that, until water physics change, or until you have gravity at that moment, cause I hate spinjump in water.
Example:
-You just spin jump right
-Then you say you will turn left
-You trun left but you are still continuing getting on the right direction, where Kraid stands
-No matter what you try, you just take painful damage for you clearly can't move around Kraid
-You die

Gravity Suit.
Then it's all okay, hope this is going to happen.
But I got a new idea...
You know everything that made the game magic are part changed in a hack. It's what I think, because I think it's for good purposes, I played Legacy and Limit and I have to say, they rock.
But what about something more original? You know, you can feel better even when you see something that is not part of SM (say Limit, lots of examples, ask if you want a good example), when you hear that ... the music is not changed.
I know THAT is WAY TOUGH to change musics, but since a SM player counts on it, then it's just like the old game revisited. It's my opinion, I repeat.
Legacy displays a moment in Maridia where everything is silent, and I have to say, that I didn't consider this was wrong at all. I would have felt seriously inside the game if I heard some new music, that fits in SM.
Okay, what do you think first?

I think that if someone makes a Super Metroid hack, he or she should first open a tile editing tool and change the names first.
Maridia, Wrecked ship.. BAA. Way too overused. We need something new.
Like, "Argadé Depths" or "Arcto-2 highlands". Much better.
And beams. "Spazer", "Plasma". No man, just no. Something better.
Fake Kraid? NO. Make new graphics, and use him as a regular enemy. Much better.
"Man it's hot. I need Varia suit to survive this heat!" Sounds familiar? Yes. Now, Varia is made for Samus to survive extreme temperatures. NOT JUST HEAT. WE NEED COLD ICE. COLD ICE!
Crocomire? A Red fat pigeon who spits desperately some marbles and tries to push you towards a spiky wall, but ends up falling in boiling-hot Lava?! NO NO NO! Crocomire needs a pallette change, and a icy lair. He'll try to push you in a ice pond instead of spike wall.

And Level editing? Yeah. ERASE EVERYTHING! Start from a sctratchand you'll get a much better hack.
Land on Zebes in a rainy day? NO. IT'S OLD.
Statues? No. Do something more innovative! Like, You get a Space Jump from Crocomire so you can get to Kraid, so you can get grapple, so you can continue to the next area, whatever it is.
Mother Brain? Sure. Mechanical interface? NO! How about, Mother Brain has gone down to the depths of Brinstar. Lowest that you can go, and Mother Brains lair is highly infested with overgrown vegetation. Also, 100% Completion rate? HA HA HA. NO. 150%, and I'm satisfied.
Botwoon a Miniboss? You've got to be kidding me. MAKE MORE BOTWOONS WITH DIFFERENT PALLETTES AND TREAT THEM AS ENEMIES.
Last, but not least; "Varia red, and Gravity Purple?" NOOO! New colors. SABS is your friend. Now get hacking.
Thanks.
It's a little, little bit exagerated ^^
I'm just a music lover, that's why.
Only music, not all that you mentionned.

Oh whoops. Got a bit carried away.. =D
Anyway, This guy named "Blackhole89" Is working on a program called "Solar Soundtrack". It can recompose any SPC (SNES) /NSF (NES) File and patch them into the ROM.
Hmmm, that looks good. Actually I'm afraid no music artist could replace the Super Metroid soundtracks. Kenji Yamamoto is the man!
By the way, we haven't seen Drewseph or Kejardon posting here for a little moment. I want to watch Redesign and Insanity now, I can't wait >_>.
Embarrasing Fact: Power suit made by lowest bidder
Insanity is going to take a long time to make. >_> I'm still working out some of the routines for animating Samus, and they're starting to get really ugly (seriously, this code is just ridiculous. It's like one person started it and another person finished it).
If I had to throw out a guess as to when Insanity might be coming out... I would guess sometime at the end of summer, at the *very* soonest. End of the year sounds more likely.
I'm not going to be posting many progress updates either, since I want the entire thing to be a surprise. :)

::edit:: Oooh. Solar Soundtrack sounds really handy, and I've heard that Super Metroid uses the same SPC format too, so if it works for SMW it should work for Super Metroid. :D ::/edit::
Ok, thanks.
Since Drewseph said he would release the hack in June, then it's all okay ^^.

Hirokazu Tanaka > Kenji Yamamoto
Hmmm... I said that because he's gonna make the Metroid Prime 3 music soundtrack, actually I like Yuzo Koshiro (streets of rage) better. Sorry >.<
Mister ...
Ok,

Hack: To manipulate a game in some way or form for other people's amusement. Normally consists of level layout changes, or complete remodeling of the game, or character(s).

People hack games all teh time, and I've played a hack before (BS Legend Of Zelda, translation and item hacks. ok, so not official hacks, but still.)  Is it possible to change the music in a Hack? OR do you only change the Back/fore/middle grounds and/or the characters/enemies?

EDIT:: just out of curiousity.
Wish it would be possible, in theory you can export mp3 in a PSX rom I think, but about SNES you must create your own SPC and export it to the rom with solar soundtrack
What'd you say?
How abut a hack where all the rooms are switched around (the door locations) so navigating would be extremely difficult  Shocked yet you still get all the itms in the same order as the original?

(what in  the world would the map look like in this case?  laugh new )
