its there a way to tell the origional NA verson copy from the player's choice simply by looking at the game discs?

Yes. Look at the bottom, around the center, for the words "DOL-GMBE-0-00 USA". If it says that, you have the original release. If those numbers say 0-02, then you have Player's Choice. 0-01, afaik, is no different from the original release.
