Edit: I'm editing all my really big useless posts into this so you don't waste your time reading them. If I should just leave them how they are then tell me and I'll stop editing them, but I think it would be better to not waste room on the page and stop if someone tells me to, than leaving them here to be annoying.

no it doesn't work
many people have asked this question
True.
There is no way you can get pass that plant without collecting the Power Grip.

Here's a little movie showing all the ways I can think of bursting the spire (made with cheats)
Like other people are saying, there is absolutely NO way to skip the Power Grip. I've trying everything - Using AR codes to do this and that, nothing destroys it except for those little bugs (and there are none around).
Okay, I've never known what kind of legend this power grip skip is in ZM, so could someone please tell me it? I would like to know these things:

-Is it possible
-If not, why

And what item in Super Metroid would be comparable to try to skip when talking about power grip?

No possible. Game itself is possible beat without using power grip, but you not can pass norfair tentacle. Nothing works against tentacle.

Tentacle disappear when you get power grip. Weird.!!!!!!
Okay, I'm stupid I know. What's exactly the "norfair tentacle"?

And if you go to that place without the Power Grip does it mean the tentacle isn't there?

Tonski, skipping pgrip in ZM is like skipping Diffusion Missiles in Fusion. You can do ANYTHING at all not using it, but the programmers placed the tentacle/orb/Spire in one spot you absolutely must pass through to continue in the game. You have to turn back and grab the item and magically, the spire disappears. The main differences from Diffusion missiles and the pgrip are that a) pgrip doesn't advance the story at all, just changes the big room containing the spire to the big room not containing the spire, and b) pgrip is used in several places after you get it.

Forcing pgrip makes very little sense if any. Does the Zebequake from the rising totem platforms cause four bugs to fall into the big room, eat the spire and get bombed right after? Also, did the programmers originally intend there to be bugs in the top right of the room, so they added platforms to get you up there?

Then there's the plasma beam before it that you had to get to get pgrip. That's totally expendable, as is the space jump, but if they really felt you needed it, couldn't they just added it in the Pre-Tourian bridge, adding the Gravity Suit blocks and the Space Jump blocks? They could have had the statues blocking the blocks, too, making it more like Metroid.
Actually plasma isn't expendable. It's neccessary to kill the black pirates at the end of the game.

Damn it. It's been tested though, right? Nothing but plasma beam kills them? No other beam or combination, or even bombs can harm them? Probably not SA, most likely not emergency pistol, speed boost/shinespark is pointless to test although might be interesting.
Ridley!
I was trying to find a way to skip the power grip in my 15% Normal Run. Well actually I was also trying to figure out how to get past even getting Unknown Item #1/Plasma Beam I almost found a way to get up to the missile area in Crateria. But it's worthless if you don't even have the Screw Attack because of this "Norfair Tentacle" I tried and had no success.  :(

What's screw attack got to do with the spire. There is no way to destroy the spire (as shown in this movie)

Yeah, and that damned crumble block preventing a tricky HBJ to get through and get Pgrip from the opposite side.

Yes, those are the only elevators. There is a hidden path to Kraid (I think it's to Ridley, but I'm not sure), but it requires Peanut Butter and Skree Attack. As far as I can tell, that is the only spire in the game that cannot be destroyed, and you can't get behind this spire, either.

As for getting to the elevators early, the only other entrances to Crateria are blocked off by the Head statues leading to Tourian and the Peanut Butter blocks under the starting point, blocking a ball-shooter (you can't get a charge close enough to shinespark through that ceiling, I've tried), and of course you can't get to Chozodia before the escape.
The only reason Nintendo made the power grip unskippable is so that people can't skip any of the unknown items. Atleast, that's my theory.
They could've just made it so you needed unknown item#1 to make the tentacle disappear if that was the case.
Or they could've just as easily slapped an Unknown Item 1 block over the entrance besides a tentacle. Maybe Nintendo was trying to make sure you didn't skip too many things.
