Radix, the route I use for my any% runs is pretty standard, I think. I don't really want to give away everything I do just yet, but after collecting the bombs in Brinstar I go into Norfair, Ridley, Kraid, Tourian, then Chozodia to finish the game. I also get 75 missiles and 4 supers before Mother Brain. My sub 36 run will hopefully be finished in a few days, so everybody will be able to see what I do pretty soon. I also tried a speed run where I fought Kraid right after getting the bombs (did the horizontal bomb jump on my first try, amazingly), but the result of that was a crappy 40:38, so it looks like Ridley before Kraid is the fastest way.
If I could give the tape for you to capture, that would be greatly appreciated. Let me know if you want to work something out when my run is finished. I'm only a 30 minute drive away! O_O
Eesh, the final segment took several days... I usually had about a 1/5 chance of beating Mecha-Ridely. (He never kills you through attrition, no. He always kills you by horizontal laser into claw swipe. And you always get a Super Missle pickup just before you die.) All my past escapes ended with me picking up two hits and dying halfway through... I had to do it a while to get the feeling for where all the pirates were. Today, with just one session, I managed to get to the final elite pirates 3 times... I used the jump back up to get them to shoot wall wildly trick, but the first two times, after the first pirate, I panicked when the second pirate was uncooperative and I tried to shoot it out when the timer hit 20 seconds. The third... well, I'm here. Oddly I didn't get down below 40 seconds in that fight, even tho in my second escape I had 2 missles and a super for the walking thingy, and none in this round.

I'm clearly not up for doing MZM runs myself then ... i tried a ridley first run on _easy_ a few weeks ago and ended up with :53 or some crap. Then I figured kraid first must be quicker, and got that :48 which I figure could have been :43 if I'd have skipped the zip line boss.

Yeah ... I hate you now.

30 minutes? I figured it would be less than that. My problem is that my VCR is shit and can only play stuff that I record at SLP/EP so for me to capture something you've recorded, you'd have to bring your VCR along too. :?
Radix, you could probably beat my time once you learn all the strats I use. That is only my basic route, there are a bunch of other stuff that I do that make the run quicker. I'm pretty proud of my time because I figured out all the speed tricks on my own.
I did my first segment yesterday, finally. That's the hardest part of the run, actually, because there are a whole lot of random factors. I got most of them to go my way, but it still could have been faster. I missed a few jumps that cost a few seconds. Now I'm saved at the first save point in Norfair (after getting the Power Grip, the save point right by the elevator to Brinstar) with 6:13, which is the fastest I've ever done this segment. Hopefully the rest of the run goes this well :)
It seems I don't totally suck ... tonight I figured I'd try another any %, this time with ridley first since everyone seems to agree that's best. I grabbed the two supers in ridley's lair and then got him easily. When I got to kraid I made sure to try the power grip method of skipping the zip line boss and got it on about the 30th attempt. Tourian went extremely well, I only had to kill 2 or 3 metroids with missiles instead of supers. I died 3 times on the way back after the chozo test ... but finally I made it to the last save. After a few screw ups on the escape I finally got a time i feel worthy of posting: 38:46 / 25% ... exactly 10 minutes faster than last week's crap. I could probably get 36:xx if I did more restarts, but that's still not as good as gc04.
Ok, my best 10% hard is 01:09:23. I know I could do better than that, so I'm really just working on perfecting it... got the first two segments cut into one now, and in doing so cut off about a minute (00:06:09 before Kraid worm with Varia). I should be able to bring it down to about 1:05 eventually, but the fact that one run takes about 3 straight days kinda makes the whole process a lot slower.
I haven't had that much time to play in the last few days, but my speed run is progressing. I have a 19:29 Tourian save 8). Hopefully the finished run is in the 34-35 range.

wow!
really great to hear that other people's runs are progressing, as well!
I can't get the image up, but I just got hard 100% 1:46:43.
would've been a good 10 minutes lower if I hadn't missed a damned missile tank on the right side of norfair, having to backtrack all the way from the save point nearest iron ted >_<
BTW, I've noticed he's actually a lot easier than it seems at first. his pattern seems to be pre-programmed about 5-10 seconds in advance of each move, so theoretically you could use savestates to find out what exactly he's going to do, reset and counter it, and then easily beat him o_O
but I was jsut experimenting >_> I beat him w/o savestates.
Yay, my first speed run. Not extraordinary, but hey, I'm satisfied. I got under an hour on my first try. Saved only once or twice.
Also, which is faster, Kraid before Ridley or Ridley before Kraid? I did Ridley first because the Super Missiles make Kraid fall in about five seconds, but the speed booster might save that amount of time or more. Does either route have a proven speed advantage?
Also, besides the Wave Beam and Varia Suit, are there any other items I should leave out (I'm doing any%)? I'm thinking about trying going without the Long Beam...
EDIT: D'oh. Replaced "Wave" with "Long" in the last sentence. I'm an idiot.

Ridley first is faster by about 3 to 5 minutes. Although it is nice if you go to Kraid first, since there are several speed booster shortcuts, plus the advantage of having 4 (or 6) Supers for Ridley. All of that does not make up for the time wasted though; Ridley first is much faster.
Just noticed the second part of your post. I never get the Long Beam in speed runs. I think the only items I skip are Long Beam, Wave Beam, and Varia. I tried a speed run where I skipped the Screw Attack, but that is about a minute slower than if you would collet it (time was 38:xx). I don't see any other items being skipped for the fastest time.

Wow the screw attack is faster? It seems to me it would take nearly 2 minutes to get and it would only be beneficial for a few seconds to kill the space pirates in the mothership and the cheerios to get refills in tourian. I debated about getting the hi jump since it takes a lot less and is very beneficial in a few places (like the final escape) but also skipped it ... now you make me want to try again with getting these :?

Well, if you're getting the Screw Attack, the Hi-Jump lies on the route back up, so not getting it would be a waste :P
As for the Screw Attack saving time, I think it saves more time in Tourian that you'd want it to :?
Once you have screw attack the only enemies you have to stop to kill are metroids and bosses, everything else you can just jump through without thinking. Also, there are some bomb blocks (not many, though) that can be screw attacked saving time. And don't forget all the screw attack block shortcuts there are. It all adds up, I have no trouble believing it saves time.
