My name is 4N6/Forensics.
This thread is for the NTSC version of Super Metroid. For a while now my brother (SnUfFiT86) and I have been planning a 100% Run both Segmented and Single Segmented. We've been holding back on creating this thread for a while but, now we finally feel comfortable enough to start getting serious about going for records. We recently bought a Capture Card online and we both plan on pumping out some Segments once it arrives. After the Segmented Run is completed we plan on moving right to Single Segment. This is an open thread as there are other talented runners out there such as 072 and Reeve who are both going for Any% Runs at the moment. Any advice, support or criticism is all welcome here. Both of us will try to keep you guys up to date as possible on the progress of our runs.

I have plenty of people to thank of course but, that will come when we get the records.
Thread title:
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Woah, that's a title and a half. Shocked

Good luck with your runs, and for what it's worth, it does make more sense to separate these from the PAL topic.

It's good that this thread is finally here. I very much look forward to runs from you two and any others that may show up for a stab at record beating times.

I will not bring PAL into this thread (oops I just did but that's the last of it)
I know I play..... That version..... for the most part but I know almost an equal amount for NTSC, just from watching speed runs for a few years now and playing it myself on emulator.
Nice to see you're serious about the records, i know that you and your brother can do it man!
I'm really looking forward to it!!!
So are you two going for separated runs or will join efforts and do a single run together?

Thanks for the support guys. Honestly I wouldn't have been so motivated to do it if it wasn't for all your support. Of course the room strategies we've all come up with and everything will all be credited of course.

Yea the title is a little much but, this is the official NTSC thread to help speed runners. Thanks Quietus I hope to finish it as soon as possible.

Yea I know I've been talking about it for far too long its about time I started it. Now that I'm ready to start taking this run seriously its pretty much needed. Also don't even worry about mentioning PAL on here because of all the NTSC stuff we posted on your thread. I of course respect and look forward to your opinions Behemoth. There might not be any more help needed to be honest because this run is pretty mapped out with the fastest strategies in each room. Thanks, Behemoth I really appreciate all your help man!!!

Thanks, Reeve!!! Its gonna be separate runs of course though all the room strategies will be the same. The only run we might actually do together is a RBO since SDA will not accept it as a category. I actually can't wait for that. We might even plan a 100% RBO together as well.

Anyway after my Capture Card arrives and I get it all set up I might even start a ustream page for you guys to watch my attempts live. I'm not sure about this though.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
The stream could get amusing. Wink Start, cock up Crateria shaft, reset, start, cock up Crateria shaft, reset, start, complete shaft, get crap Torizo fight, reset...

Also, after typing the words 'cock', 'up', and 'shaft', I couldn't help but snicker to myself.  I'm beginning to think I have a dirty mind. aiwebs_014

I'm actually not too concerned with that segment as I am with the next 2 afterwords. I probably won't reset so much if I stream because I will see what time I get anyway and it may get annoying to watch reset after reset. I'm concerned with all the segments of course but, that is the least of my worries to be honest.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Well, keep resetting can actually do more harm than good.  With segmented it's not quite so bad, but you run the risk of running the early portion of your run a hundred times, but due to resets, only running the later section fifty times.  This can result in your segments' quality dropping toward the end.  I'm sure you're aware of this, but I just thought I'd chip in.

Sounds familiar.

LOL. Yea I know what your saying Quietus but, honestly I won't settle for anything less then my expectations.
Here's a part I've been meaning to enquire about for a while. In Hotarubi's 0:50 when going to grab the X ray scope in the long room. While space jumping he looks as if he falls purposefully onto the spikes and then get's a bigger run up on them before jumping again having faster space jumps to the x ray door. I did this in my run thinking that possibly it's faster but I think it could be just about the same. I was going to post the youtube vid of the specific part of the run but then I thought just a description was all that was needed
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
The only time it's faster is if you fall on the earliest part of the spikes, so that you have longer Space Jumping at the faster speed.  Hitting the spikes later negates the purpose, as the time becomes closer the farther you go.  For the best result, you could turn around (to face right), and then turn back left just as before you hit the spikes, , exploiting the turnaround animation, so that you don't get knocked back, but you still get the invulnerability, and can start running straight away, equalling more speed.  Getting knocked back, even slightly wastes some of the invulnerability time.  Tougher, of course, but the best option if you can.  Test it, and you'll soon get it.  I managed after just two or three tries, and it's easy to get consistent.
Edit history:
Behemoth: 2010-08-15 11:51:12 am
The earliest big run up you can get is just after the first grabber (dam I forgot their name). The area of spikes before the grabber behind the metal block is too small to be any faster in the long run. To not get knocked back you simply have to be holding dash and direction. The smv I've provided shows pretty much the maximum distance you can travel on the spikes before getting hit again (on PAL I believe you can go for a bit longer). Anycase I'm sure this is maybe 1/2 or 1 second faster than simply space jumping across as normal.

[edit] the earliest obviously is just before the grabber and in front of the metal block, which would make the method slightly faster, but this of course has more risk attached to it.
Where are these smv's SnUfFiT86 ? I need them noooooooow lol

I love you whores!
ummm... holy shit!!! a 52 Behemoth really? so sick!! and holy shit!!! im posting in M2k2. would u like me to breakdown ur run thoroughly later, do u want a quick summary, or could really care less (because i have nothing but good things to say anyway)? real quick, about the long room b4 x-ray, i'm gonna try what Quietus said because he's right about more invulnerability time so i'll see if theres a consistency there. it should be manageable. Oh speaking of Quietus. i have to thank u for that cool wrap-around in Brinstar cleanup. why? bcuz its fuckin' cool and i love it. and the X ray spike run (NTSC).smv i think still saves time ntsc or not. thats a really good find Behemoth. the only thing i hate is that god damn green gate. u somehow r so good with those gates its ridiculous. ok time for smv (Master88esque). i think Forensic made a little too much hype about it when the smvs aren't really that important.

ZebetiteNoAngle (NTSC)- This ones strictly 4 u Behemoth (Not that u have trouble). But now we can execute this at about the same speed as if we had angle down.

MaridiaFramesaver (NTSC)- This is something i been meaning to post for awhile. Not that what ur doing is wrong but do this and u save an average of about 10 frames. Just make sure u push right b4 u unmorph avoing the 6 frame turnaround animation. of course its just a suggestion, but it has proven to save time...more like a few frames but faster nonetheless.

thats it for now. A Room Everybody  Hates (NTSC).smv and ReverseKago (NTSC).smv later. so peace for now i'll be posting alot more frequent also and thats coming from my mouth so i'll talk to u doods later. later
Good to see you here SnUfFiT86 !. That's ok about my run. I'll be beating it soon anyway. In fact twice I've done two 0:52 unrecorded that were shit as hell. 0:51 is limit for PAL I truly believe that. In order to get it, every important strategy needs to be accomplished with only several minor mistakes along the way. Not an easy feat to accomplish ! But I know I can do it. If you want to do a summary of my run then by all means knock yourself out lol I'm sure it'll be a good read nonetheless but it isn't really nessassary. O yea about green gates. There's some portion of the background you can use for every green gate to line up the shot perfectly. I don't always get it but I have been very lucky to get nearly all of them in my runs you've seen, and then do some mock ball shit when I land to make the tricks a bit faster. Experiment with backgrounds is all I say and you'll have more success with them. But you may already do this.

Anyway enough about that, to the smv's...

ZebititeNoAngle - Man why didn't I think of this. I guess I just assumed that the shot would hit the zebitite first and not the rinka. Anycase I shall try this.

MaridiaFramesaver - I guess this is cool because all you have to do is turn right before the unmorph and you'll always cancel the turnaround animation when your upright. And you can do it while your falling from a ledge or when you have landed (PAL I think due to lower horizontal momentum while falling), it makes no difference because a ball turn is quicker.

I look forward to the other smv's later. I'll probably start recording again later as well.
I love you whores!
lol people tend 2 expect 2 much outta u sometimes its just funny 2 me. sometimes i laugh and think fuck u, u do it. after all the practice i put in i really understand when u say things like "unfortunate" because trying to put it all together i can understand first hand exactly what u mean. u also said it has to be like 2nd nature and with the experience im gaining thats the real truth 2 be able 2 produce a quality run.

oh man yea i do use a visual in the background, but sometimes man i swear i hit that shit but in reality i was probably like a hair off.

good luck with ur attempts man u know we got ur back. a 51\52 thats just fuckin' sick. oh man fuck u!
now i have 2 get like a 46\47 haha. soon Behemoth SOON i will be side by side with u in all our Super Metroid glory.

Oh also Behemoth about your run I think I was a little to critical when I first watched it. Honestly after re-watching the run its definitely submittable for SDA. If you really want to go for 51 though then more power to you. I can't wait to see it once its complete.

Also I was messing around on console a couple of days ago and of course something weird happened to me as always and I finally found out why. After you defeat Botwoon if you exit lair fast enough by balling over the pillar before his music changes he will still be in the room if you renter. Has this ever happened to anybody before?
I love you whores!
no thats never happened 2 me with Botwoon. but i do believe i read that somewhere b4.

however i didn't know u could do this (smv below). i was just messin around and thought it was funny

I think it's cool that some people push me to do better runs. I may have given up after my 0:54 if no one pointed out the mistakes and the obvious improvement it could have.

It's right when your in the heat of the run and your feeling fairly confident with only just a bit of nerves that you do the most ridiculous mistakes and your left in shock with what you've just done. It happens to me when I'm recording. Recording nerves I call It. could be constructive or it might not to some people but to me I don't do well with nerves. If only there was some mental preperation I could do to abolish the nerves from this run I believe I could get 0:51 soon enough. Of course I need the bosses to be helpful for a time like that (I'm looking at you draygon, no more swooping on round 2, bitch !)

Green gates - yea you can miss them even when you know you should have got it. I guess it's one of those things where you can only use part visual and part feeling. You get that little rush in your finger that says "shoot.......now".

You can do it man. Man that was a funny read. For me it's been a very long and tiring uphill struggle to get here. Constantly being surprised with what the new limits of the game are. Which is what keeps me coming back because a new record could be set. I'm not toally there yet. It also helps when your addicted to this game by default anyway like me lol. All I can say is, all the best with your run, and you Forensic. As long as you beat Hotarubi's 0:50 that's the main thing. Which is a good question. Has any of you actually got a 0:49 or lower yet ? That will be a momentus occassion in itself even if it wasn't recorded.

Don't worry about the fair and honest comments Forensic. I needed that because that's exactly the sort of comments that make me re analize what I've just produced and gives me the insentive to chuck aside the lazy side of me that wants to settle for something less than what I'm capable of.

The botwoon thing. Wow that is weird. I'm gonna try that.

Btw the zebitite strategy Smv is works a treat. You just have to shoot low as possible so your arm cannon is underneath the zebitite. So you hit the rinka instead.

yea man the nerves thing hitches me up. its weird bcuz i dont feel nervous but then i do the stupidest thing, like something i've never messed up b4. and its always something stupid like an enemy boost or a short mockball. Missing an item turn, u know, dumb shit, easy shit.

uphill it is my friend. im not trying 2 rush it either as it would put unnecessary pressure on myself. i know people wanna see it done but if they're patient they wont be disappointed. 2 answer ur question simply no. no i've never made an attempt to do so. could i? yes. hell yes. Forensic knows the good from the bad and he's watched me play live and very well knows what i'm capable of (im sure hes boasted). all the time i wasnt posting i was...we were working on the weak points of our game. Alot of my fails were from some new tricks i haven't put much time into and just assumed i would b ok. the rest of the fails were due to fatigue. Forensics is also an elite player and is working hard 2 get this done. This game can eat u alive if u let, so we take breaks rest our minds more than anything, i cant stress how important rest is. but so happens we're just as addicted as u, and i get that sm jones in me also, u know that itch that u cant stop scratchin' and your bleeding but u dont care u need it...............where the fuck am i going with this, fuck it, post
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I found another little time-saver.  During the Brinstar Cleanup section, by charging your beam as shown, you can clear the shot block to allow for a small mockball.  It looks tough, but it's actually not too bad because the jump is basically a very light tap, so it's not so much about timing or anything.  I got it a few times in a row after a little practice, so I'm sure you guys'll get it quick enough.  Since you're waiting for the Power Bomb to go off as well, even if you fail this, you'll just carry on as normal.

Also, v1.52, so hopefully no desynchs. Cool

Nice Quietus!!! but unfortunately Behemoth not only brought that to our attention but also nailed that or almost that same trick in his 54min. 100% run. your efforts are very much appreciated to let u know my friend. i like that u step up and can offer very good input\advice so again good work man and not a bad play if i do say so myself.

[edit] hmmm while im here i might as well post these smvs

A Room Everybody  Hates (NTSC)- ok, i dont care who you are, all of u, yea all of you hate the old motherbrain room going either way (i swear those platforms were there to annoy speedrunners). Well what im gonna show u guys is by no means an easier way to clear the room but, omg its so rape.

v1.52 (thanks 4 reminding me Quietus)

fuck no attachment in an edit?

for those who try it -

1st - u need a pretty deep jump in the door for the transiton (it doesnt have to be perfect).

2nd - hold jump, shoot and angle up on the D-PAD (it wont work with ur shoulder button) in-between transiton and just work on your jump release timing to reach the platform where the 2nd Hunter is (the first Hunter is an auto-kill if done as said).

3rd - note that after u kill the first Hunter make sure to release ur shoot button. then b4 u collide with the 2nd Hunter hold the shoot button for two quick shots to kill the 2nd and 3rd Hunters (note: shooting twice fast later like i explained manipulates the 3rd Hunter to NOT shoot his beam, which in turn will impede ur progress), then proceed as usual.

Behemoth: 2010-08-17 09:45:02 pm
It is a good trick queitus. I decided to not do it in my latest run because it's just a bit hard and I keep hitting the highest pillar for some reason. The main reason for not doing it now is because of the strategy before it that makes us turn back onto the power bomb and therefore we have a bigger run up which means more speed and therefore harder to make it through the gap. So your better off just jumping over there and dropping. I was lucky to get it in my old run. Even with less speed from the old strategy.

That mother brain smv is cool SnUfFiT86. That actually looks like a wortwhile strategy. Faster shots hitting mother brain while not needing to shoot the rinkas nearbye as they hit you and don't move you. Plus it has comedy appeal too for extra win, Mother brain: "Yea I know I can't move but don't take the piss, get back on that platform", Samus: "I'll just sit here... don't mind if I do... BAM, BAM". You could imagine a comic book picture interpretation of this with the glass broken in the middle and samus having one hand on top of the tank and the arm cannon hanging down blasting mother brains face.

A room everybosy hates. Well I have to say, I still hate it. I can't find total consistancy with the jump. The height requirement has near no room for error. I think the most basic method for this is the best. Stop on a dime with up on d pad, shoot pirate, let go of up, shoot ahead, jump on the first pillar ahead of you, shoot ahead again and then cross gap with down and then you can (hopefully) jump to the next platform and continue the room. That jump is the only hard part.

Also I don't know if you know this but I feel stupid for not reealising it till this day... well two things actually. one is regular bombs destroy mother brains grenades instantly with no ground covering explosion. It's certianly something put into the game to make things a bit more eventful than just shooting her to death. The other thing is after reset glitch go into the room opposite the crateria map data room where the missiles are and the chozo sitting there will emitt a searchlight from it's eye. The same ones you get when you pick up the morph ball. I feel stupid as hell for not knowing this. I may have done it ages ago and completely forgot about it.
