Edit: Here's my original post, to the best of my memory.

Can someone point me in the direction of a hack that isn't insanely difficult?

That means no hacks that require mockball or other glitch abusing, please. Also, I despise spikes, and I'm competent at midair morphs.

Acheron: I've played through SFI already; even on "easy", Cliffhanger was hell; and Reverse was somewhat buggy for me. Thanks for telling me, though.

Unfortunately most hacks currently released are intentionally weighted a bit towards the "challenging" end. I recommend Search for Items, Cliffhanger (easy version), and Reverse if you want hacks that aren't too tough.

I'm surprised a topic like this hasn't popped up sooner. Does anyone else have suggestions for hack "difficulty"?

Edit: Should mention I'm not an expert on difficulty of hacks. I know someone on these forums can step up to the plate though!

Would be great if someone compiled a list of hacks according to difficulty. Perhaps four categories: SM–level (if any exist), medium, hard, and insane.

For those just joining us, your host AutoFire has asked for suggestions about hacks to play; specifically, hacks that are not particularly difficult. Any other forumgoers want to suggest appropriate difficulties for the multitude of hacks out there? I'm not an appropriate judge, considering what happens to my brain when I play a hack with spikes.

I strongly suggest Limit. It was a perfect hack in my opinion.
I just started Limit, and already I've run into a serious bug:

I can't go through the doors on the space colony when I'm escaping.

If you had bugs with Reverse AND Limit you might want to look into the ROM you're using. Make sure you're trying patches on both headered and unheadered; also be aware that there is a "clean" ROM out there on the internets that is in fact not clean.
Tried both headered and unheadered; the game only plays when patched to headered, and I'm still encountering the broken Ceres doors.

I just tested it and had no problems on a headered ROM. I suspect your "clean" ROM may be a bad dump. Search the wide internets for a ROM, I can't provide any links but they're not super hard to find.
Fear Me! (Or else...)
Maybe Aeigus will work, when you have it done. From what I've seen, it looks like it's a good one. Ice Metal, maybe, but that one seems like it would be among the difficulty of 'medium' to 'hard', although that just might be that Acheron didn't provide that long a video about Aeigus. This is just my impression.

My ROM can't be a bad dump; every other hack patches to it just fine.

Try re-downloading the patch, then.

You know the escape from Ceres in Limit has a different route, right?  You don't just go back the way you came.

Anyway, the hack that most approximates SM in difficulty, IMO, is Legacy.  It's not too tough at all.  Limit has some pretty hard parts.  Dependence also isn't too bad, and is highly non-linear.
You could play my hack. I suggest you to play the Super Metroid RBO first. The rest may be hard for you. The link is located in my signiture.
SFI is very easy, Legacy is also relatively easy
I'd say Golden Dawn was fairly easy. As long as you don't mind exploring for a couple hours that is. It has very high visual appeal, with solid gameplay, the only hard part I remember is Draygon.

Golden Dawn was one of the hardest for me, i didnt have enough patience i guess

The first thought I had was to maybe color code or have rankings for the list in the [gameplay help] topic.  I'll need to work out what I can do to simplify the list.  Then again...  "Difficulty" can be subjective for each player. :-?

I will need to find out and sort what the zero mission hacks are.  Unfortunately I'm not familiar with Metroid Zero Mission.  Embarassed

I could actually implement that to my site, though I would need some input from others to determine a difficulty. Good thing TS Fay cancelled Classes tomorrow today....

Huh, nobody's mentioned Redesign? I'm surprised.

It's not insanely hard, it's just insanely huge. There are also neat additions to physics and some items.
In all fairness, Redesign is more of an entirely new game with the familiar sprites/gfx than a hack. A sequel of sorts at least.

I actually had a harder time with Redesign than I did with Impossible, but that's very possibly just me  Embarassed
A sequel to what? Metroid Prime? DOHOHOHOHO

Anyway, SFI and Legacy are definitely the easiest hacks. Dependence is a bit of a step up or a large step up depending on the routes you take. CHeasy, GD, Limit and Redesign are all in the same area I'd think but I'm not sure which I'd say is harder or easier since I haven't played enough of Limit or Redesign recently.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well, being the creator of two Zero Mission hacks, I can give info on mine; Neon City is probably about a 5/10 and Zero Rush is easily a 9/10, where Zero Rush is the harder hack. As a reference point, I give Cliffhanger Original Version a 9/10.

Okay, added.  As for the difficulty rankings...  I'll keep record of what I can and then add it later when I get almost all of them.

Edit: Then again...  That is pretty ambitious.  I'll leave that for Electrometer Prime.  aiwebs_017

If anyone has a hack topic here in the hacks/fan-games forum that I missed - send me a PM with a link to it and I'll add it.

If I don't add it - it may mean I'd consider it a 'bell & whistle' hack.  The one that comes to mind is the one that was released here just recently where everything is the same but weapons strengths are lowered and boss hp is raised. :-?  Sorry.

The original ROM I downloaded worked for the first four or five hacks I played, and then I finally found one or two it didn't. A bad dump may work with some hacks and not with others. Just FYI.
