Soooo... I've started playing Metroid 1 in earnest. You know in the planet with all the pruple bubbles and like 5 free missile tanks packed into 2 rooms (WHOO HOO!!), if you do some stuff and run around to this place you get a little blue item from a Chozo. I checked a map and it said "Ice Weapon". It appears to have no effect whatsoever; was it a planned item that just never got programmed? Or is my character all magical now and I just can't tell? :P

P.S. I love Metroid. I've never really played it before, and I'm having a blast. I've got my bomb jumping up to 3 every time... and diagonal bomb jump to out-of-marumari-jump is fun as hell.
Thread title:
直死の魔眼使い
That's supposed to be the Ice Beam; it freezes your enemies, effectively allowing you to use them as platforms, and also (unfortunately) effectively making you waste double the time killing them, since the first hit will always freeze them, and the second will unfreeze and damage. Are you sure it doesn't do anything? Have you tried actually attacking someone with it?
Do you mean to say that there are 2 places where you can get the Ice Beam? Because I got my Ice Beam from under the lava in that other area. I had it when I got this new item.

Also, how do you see your password without dying? :P

Edit: Here's a map. Note the two different items. I got Ice Beam a while ago; the Ice Weapon is the new thing I'm confused by:

There are, indeed, 2 different places to get ice beam.  If you already have the Brinstar ice beam, getting the one in Norfair will have no effect.  And, Norfair also contains wave beam.  The only way to switch beams is by visiting the appropriate Chozo Statue.  (So, if you have wave and want ice, you'll need to visit one of the two statues and "re-acquire" ice beam.)

And, the only way to get a password is to die.  :P

Actually, even though it indeed effectively resets your game, there's a way to get the Password screen without dying: pause the game by pressing Start, and press Up and A on the second controller -- this'll take you automatically to the password screen. :P

Ready and willing.
Eh, that sort of counts as dying. It's effectively a suicide code, and it's almost the same code used in SMB2(US) to commit suicide. (Up+A+B on controller 2 rather than just Up+A). Also compare to Zelda.

That is, in fact, extremely helpful and exactly what I was looking for. ^_^ I'll use save states once I've beaten the game. Until then, I want the real experience all the way through.

I assume when you use the pause-Up-A-method, you'll only have 30 energy when you re-load the game? Also... does it HAVE to be second controller? :P 'Cos that's lame. But since I'm on an emulator it's of course not a problem.      ...but still lame.
