How should Super Metroid for the GBA be done?
Direct Port (11)
Updated Graphics (28)
Totally Revamped (20)
*manly poses*
I know most people want a direct port, but I think SM should have new sprites, and have the Power Grip incorporated in. After playing through MF and MZM with it, I don't think I can play without it. >_<;

Edit: I messed the title up. >_>; Might as well add a poll too. :D
Thread title:
...

That would mean redesigning the whole game.  Most people (including myself at one point) would kill if SM is touched.  But, I think I'm now leaning more toward a remake rather than a port.

1- Graphic update.  They can be cleaner, but not so much to change the overall feel of the game.

2- Cutscenes.  ZM style to add a little story to it (though ZM's didn't add that much story... it was just cool).

3- A twist, like at the end of ZM.  That would be cool, though I don't know what they'd do.

4- Eliminating the bugs (Space/Time Beam, Murder Beam, etc.)

5- Control Redesign. SNES had 7 action buttons (counting Select) for SM.  The GBA only has 5 (again, counting  select).  I still don't like having to hold R to use missiles, though I guess it's good for quick changing.  Maybe like this:

A - Fire
B - Jump
R - Dash
L - Aim
Sel - Change weapon.

But that's just what I think.

I know having the PG would mean redisigning stuff, but it's just so cool. ;o

For the controller, I say we ttally eliminate the dash button, and make it:

Code:
Walk ---------------> Run ---------------> Speed Boost
         1 second 4(?) seconds

That way, we only need six buttons. R can simply be a use button. Missiles will function as in MF and MZM, with grapple it can be in place of the beam (No R holding), and you just press R to use the X-Scope. Power Bombs are simply always on, if you Morph (Once again, Press R to activate). That makes it:

A: Jump
B: Shoot
L: Aim
R: Use
Select: Change Weapon

Did I forget an action from SM? >_>
直死の魔眼使い
There's always the option to make it like the old school games: press once to walk, press twice to run. ;)
Bah, those always pissed me off.  I hate double-tapping my directional buttons.

But if they don't have a Run button, they can't do fun things like the n00b-bridge.

EDIT:  That's n00b-BRIDGE!  The n00b-tube is the Maridia one.
*manly poses*
I got stuck on the n00b bridge once. XD

Took me a while before I realized there was a button I never pressed. And, guess what, I ran. >_<

EDIT: Tube, bridge, what's the difference?
Ahhh! What the hell is the noob bridge? Can I get a screenshot of it or something?

Anyway, the following things I would like to see in a super metroid remake

1. Why Samus lost all her abilities AGAIN (ZM/1: She never had em, 2: Unexplained, Super: Unexplained, Fusion: The whole X deal)

2. Better Graphics but they were good enough.

3. Keep SOME of the bugs (for the love of god, keep the mockball)

4. Better controls, I think this is what I would like

A: Jump
B: Shoot
L: Aim
R: Switch (You know, like fusion and ZM)
Select: Weapon Select

5. If possible, original version playable for beating it

6. HARD MODE!

7. DO NOT PUT A HINT SYSTEM! I think this pissed off the veterans in ZM.

I'll come up with more later
Not impossible
just highly unlikely

Maybe the vetrans who didn't know that all but one of the statues are completely optional.

I might be able to get a shot of the n00b bridge.

EDIT: Got it.

Haven't We Already Had This Conversation Before?

I highly suggest you read that thread as well.

THAT noob bridge? I was a noob to super and I didn't even have trouble on it :( oh well, time to beg the people for their noob bridge stories...
I never really had a problem with the n00b bridge, but the n00b tube had me stumped for about two hours my first time through.  The I went through laying power bombs in every room.

The n00b bridge got me because my S. Metroid broke, so i had to pick up the ROM. ;/
Use the control scheme of Zero Mission and Fusion, cutscenes possibly update the graphics, get rid of all the bugs... That's about it.  No Power Grip (it would completely screw up the game), no redesigned maps, no new items... A mostly direct port would be the best.
I personally think a direct port would be a step BACKWARDS.  The series has evolved since super metroid, the controls have been seriously fine tuned, the jumping largely changed, controls have been tweaked, and it all around looks a ton better.

I'm also slightly greedy in the fact that, no matter how much they would screw with super metroid remaking it, i would always have the original.

I really doubt if they kept the layout the same, they could make it worse.  The reason that zero mission was so short was because the map was so damn tiny to begin with, super metroid has far more area to cover to begin with.

Sure, super metroid is still the best in my mind, and for obvious reasons, but that doesn't mean its perfect.  They could go for a simple port, (which wouldn't be simple, with the control scheme and all) or they could try and make it a better experience.  I would LOVE pirate logs on zebes, (though they should be optional) among other things.
Yeah, pirate logs would totally kick ass.  I'm getting a kick out of reading the MP ones.

"WARNING!  Bio form Samus Aran is able to hack our computer systems at will!"

"Now taking volunteers for a hunting party.  The target is Samus Aran."

I love watching them squirm.

That's a bit over stating it. Only 1 statue is strictly speaking required, but there are others that would probably be almost impossible to dodge first time through. For instance, if you get the long beam at the beginning, you have to go back out through a statue, IIRC. And I don't know anyone who'd pass up the long beam first time through.
I love Primes hint system.

shows up when needed, can turn it off if you want, then you'll never hear about it again.

A metroid game *NEEDS* a hint system at this point.  People who have played older metroid games dislike them, but anyone who's only played the newer ones think theyre required.  Theyre in roughly half the series, and theres no way of that stopping now.
An OPTIONAL hint system would be a nice addition, yes.
On second thought, optional would be better. I would like to see the pirate logs though, all of them concerning Samus made me laugh, especially the part when they tried to recreate the morph ball (I swear, that should have been a cutscene in prime)
Pretty much direct port for me. I don't like how they make the games nowdays... Sure, an update on the controls would be lovely. Maybe optional hints like in Prime, and variable difficulty as well (I'd go on hard the first time through), but that's it. I seriously don't like the new graphics style of the games. It looks good, but ... it doesn't do it for me.

But, as I read in an interview, there probably won't be a remade Super Metroid for us, unless the developers find a whole new way to bring the entire series forward (like they did with Zero Mission, incorporating several new moves and items, and updating the story).

Last time I played SM (on a EMU, couldn't find my SNES controller XD) I got stuck on that bridge too. I thought I need the speedbooster, coz I forgot that there is a dash button. >_>

@topic:
They should completly remake it, with a PG and w/o the dash!
i got over it without dashing. ;)

only found out about the dash button when i got the speed booster and couldn't figure out why it wasn't working.

Shocked

How the hell did you manage that?
