I noticed some themes work better with lower resolution than others. The babylon theme for example works fine in 1024x768, while the current default theme, black rain, works best in 1280x768 or better.

But having them isn't taking away from anything. Looks like saber is going to make the default theme (black rain) as nice-looking as possible, so new users won't be put off by the forum. Then, if they want, they can switch to one of the many other options.
EDIT: Figured I should post some things I do like about the new forum, since so far I've done nothing but complain about the look. ;)
When you edit a post, the submit button is "save", rather than "post" (as it was on phpBB). This eliminates the confusion I used to have when I'd accidentally edit a user's post when I meant to quote it.
And you can edit your post in the thread itself? This is awesome.
I also quite like how, when writing a post, if you hit any BBCode button, the "[i][/i]" (or whatever) is placed where your cursor is rather than at the end of the post. Makes things so much easier.

i agree with you with regard to the color scheme
the forum is much too cold with the main site in mind
but regardless this setup is a great improvement
