Hey, it happens, and I'm not going to pretend that my post wasn't a bit too hostile.  The problem with message boards is that you can't hear someone saying something, so the only clue you have as to how they said it is by their choice of words.  I need to be more careful.

Well, it's a great game that was way before its time, but the "You never start with more than 30 energy" thing was the big thing that makes it so frustrating to play through.  I'm about one-third of the way through, and it's pretty fun anyway.  When I finish the whole thing maybe I'll re-evaluate it.  Till then, I'm sticking with II.
The problem with the older metroids is that, compared to the newer ones, they're not so user-friendly, as in helping you along. Hell, #1 and 2 don't even offer explanations of their items in the game, and 1 doesn't give you any names. It's tough to like a game like that when you started off your career with Prime, or worse, Fusion. I enjoy the older games, but they took some getting used to.

My personal favorite is Prime, super's control is just too awkward for me. I've been spoiled.

Amen. Course, I've never played Super, cause I...uh...can't find the ROM...and since you can't give it out on the boards...well yeah. I played Metroid by unlocking it in Prime...it's...hard...

I use Zsnes, but I can't get used to the keyboard. ARRGH!
Although I like the original for its maze factor and just how many secret passages and dead ends there were and how badly you could get lost, it had so many flaws/issues that were covered by the later games.

Super Metroid is my favorite, hands down. Best blend of storytelling, gameplay, and atmosphere for me. And the music is just excellent; a blend of ambient/mood while still being very structured, which is something that seems hard to come by.

5. Metroid Fusion [GBA]
As a game, Metroid Fusion is great, but as a Metroid game, well, it isn't. When I hear "Metroid", I think of exploring. Fusion killed the exploring part. When you don't get a target (like when chasing Nightmare) it's so obvious where to go anyway ("hmm, broken doors, maybe I should go there?"). So I place it here.

4. Metroid II - Return of Samus [Gb]
If Fusion was anti-exploring, this is over-exploring. When the terrain looks the same everywhere and you have no map, you just have to try to remember where you have been. Little frustrating sometimes, but I'd pick it over Fusion anyday. And the soundtrack is just great,

3. Metroid [NES]
Ah, the original. Never actually played it on NES. I've emulated and played it on Prime. It still rocks today.

2. Super Metroid [SNES]
Perfection is the word. SM is just perfect all along. I've played it through five times. It's as magical every time. I love. But...

1. Metroid Prime [GC]
...this is more Perfect. MP is, I dare say, Teh Most Perfect Game There Is™. It's the best game I've ever played. EVER.
Fusion is my favorite. All the others are very close though. Except Zero Mission. I don't like that one too much.
I liked Fusion because of the atmosphere and the story behind it. I still see the next Metroid game in the series being a free-roaming game with Samus on the run from the Federation.

People say Fusion is too linear. I noticed something. In RoS, you can't proceed until you kill some Metroids, right. You are blocked until you acheive that objective. Fusion isn't much different except it tells you where to go and gives you a map. Take those away and you have RoS in color on a space station.

I gotta go with Prime, because it's the only Metroid game I've completed twice (so far). Once on normal and once on hard.

I also emulated Super Metroid and Fusion, I don't have my Super Nntendo anymore (and it's very hard to get a hold of a SM cart nowdays anyway), and I'm not about to buy a GBA just to play one game (well, two games maybe). Also, I don't even have a Gamecube, I play on my brother's. So I guess I should get the title "biggest freeloader ever".

ive completed fusion 38 times and super 12 times and prime 1 time and metroid one half time but super is still the best
Out of the ones I've played (haven't played Super/RoS)

1. Metroid Prime
2. Metroid Zero Mission
3. Metroid
4. Metroid Fusion

Prime is Prime. 'nuff said.

MZM is too linear, but actually sequence breakable, and the stealth was cool.

Metroid is just great. The only things I have against it are the confusion and difficulty, but that makes it fun.

Fusion is much too linear.

Ever since I've played MII and MF again, I've switched them around on my rankings, if anyone cares.
I haven't played RoS or Super, and Fusion's not so bad, but I decided on Prime.
