I'll be back. Maybe...
I was playing Super today and using almost every SB there is, for practice mainly: I just beat Crocomire without Power Bombs, and I went to get the expansion from behind his room. When I did the dash jump onto the ledge I noticed that if you jump a little earlier you don't hit the roof and you land straight on the ledge rather than having to wall jump. If you didn't already know this, it could cut about a quarter of a second off of times.
Thread title:
Simply shinesparking into the room is even faster, and that's what I do. :)

I just found that a similar trick (dashing on a falling platform) can be used in Wrecked Ship to get the energy tank before the Gravity Suit. It's not really very useful though, as you go through that area anyway to get to Maridia after the Gravity Suit.
Well, I think I know what Energy tank you mean, and I always get it before Gravity suit, just remove your High-jumpboots.

Remove the High Jump boots? Never. However, getting the grapple and only using it to get back out past the water, because it's needed for 100%? That I'll do any day.
Get back past what water?

The water after the grapple beam. You can't Wall Jump up 1 wall in water without Gravity Suit in this game unlike Fusion, and there's not enough space to build up a shinespark. I don't think you can go back the other way; I hadn't actually got enough health to get back across the lava.
Not sure how much health is not enough, but you can go back through the huge room before the grapple beam and shinespark up most of that shaft by dashing from that side room (where the acid is rising and lowering).  I'm pretty sure Scarlet does this in her run.
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
Man, Skreemaster..watch a speed run sometime.  Wink

No one goes to Maridia via the Wrecked Ship anymore.  :o

You can go back to the right after getting the Grappling Beam, too.  If you jump just right, you can jump off the ledge at the top right and avoid running into any of those Ripper guys and get a mockball out of it (but I have Space Jump by then and at Crocomire, so it's a moot point for how I played the game).

Grapple is cool when it saves you 1 second!

Anyway, cool, I think that's what I usually would do for that PB after Crocomire, and the E-Tank with the water/grapple things when you don't have the Gravity Suit is much easier when you take off the Hi-Jump boots, like graveworm said.

A speed run? But it takes about 5 hours to download, and that's in poor quality. Maybe I can get more bandwidth if I download when no-one else is using the connection.

I wasn't trying to speed run, just doing SB practice.
It's possible even earlier, by wall jumping up the first shaft you encounter in red brinstar, even without the high jump boots.

Didn't manage to do it by bomb jumping though, since I was slow, might be possible though.

Anyway, rather useless for speed runs I guess; Just for the record

It's not easy either, because there are so many rippers. You could still get PBs before Kraid by the mockball to ice beam and then climbing up the rippers.

Do PBs actually affect Kraid, if his mouth is open?
you might kill the rippers by using super misslies first if they disturb you too much, of course
Or just don't do it, since it achieves nothing. :)
I'll be back. Maybe...
You can kill Rippers with Super Missiles? What a waste...
Hmm...I never turn off the High Jump boots once when I'm speed running and I still get past the room you guys are talking about easily...any one can do it...I just got used to the added height and when to let go of the jump button...I don't think I would be able to do it as well without the high jump boots on...

This is totally pointless though...
I take off the high jump boots when I play, since I save like 2 or 3 times when I play, and I don't want to fail and bring my time down. Some jumps are easier without the high-jump boots and allows you to avoid damage easier.
Hmm...

Once before Wrecked Ship...Once after...once after getting all the items I can before Maridia without glithces...once right before Tourian...

All of the times I save are always at the ship...the way I do it forces me not to mess up else I restart the game and have to do everything I did up to that point over again...it gets a little annoying at times...but it certainly does help...

4 times in total...

Turning off the Hi-Jump Boots gives you more horizontal distance than height, and that can be helpful in some places (why worry about bumping into those spikes in the Wrecked Ship when you can just remove the boots and not have to, and only worry about falling into the water).

You could spike jump, but I never tried it there..that's probably the most nerve-wracking jump in the game for me to get off (speedrun wise).
It just pisses me off when I fail...cause if I do miss a jump and land wrong I'll probably lose up to 200 Health...

Spike jump where?

To the Energy Tank from a platform (watch there aren't spikes on the ceiling at all..go brain fart).
Time bomb set get out fast!
You're half right.  There are spikes, they're just on the floor.
Ah, there, I think.

If I'm right, I must say I hate that jump too.
