That's what I figured, but I just wanted to be sure since I don't remember Nintendo themselves coming right out and saying it.

Speaking of which, just found this on IGN even though they didn't show off the console today:

I'm assuming that's just a prototype, but in any case it doesn't surprise me given that the console still has Wii in the name.

Edit: Oh, and other than Luigi's Mansion 2 for the 3DS and the Smash Bros that will supposedly incorporate both the 3DS and Wii U somehow, I was overall disappointed with their game announcements this year. I knew about the other ones I'm interested in already, and even then we didn't get that much on any of them.
Jagger ftw
perhaps it supports nes and snes cartridge:P
One shall stand, one shall ball.
That fucker is going to be the most expensive controller of all time. And Wii U is such a mind blowingly awful name it almost makes Wii okay.
Yeah, not exactly the smartest name they could've chosen here. I've already heard tons of jokes about it, the most common one being how if you say the name a few times it sounds like an ambulance.

It's actually kind of funny that Nintendo's doing something like this the day after Sony had a bunch of hype based on PS3 - Vita being able to sort of trade saves back and forth.

Guess we'll have to see what they do with it though, lord knows no third party's going to stick to it for too long. :v

Oh lol, everything I'm seeing indicates that only one controller is used per console, any local multiplayer would see one player with halfway competent controls everyone else gets Wii controls. If local multiplayer wasn't already dead I'd be disappointed.

IGN just finished streaming a demo of Arkham City and oh my FUCKI want that game right now. Combat looks fan-fucking-tastic as expected, using explosive gel during the was rad as hell. Movement across the city looks incredible. And the Riddler challenge they showed was the most Batmanest goddamn thing I have ever seen.

I have the most tremendous nerd boner for this game holy shit. The Goddamn Batman indeed.
the more i think about it, the more i like this new controller. it's a given that comfortability is a huge problem, but it's very likely that the controller's current design is more of a showcase. it'll probably end up looking much better on release.

just the really simple, yet cool possibilities by making the controller adoptanother camera. constant backview for racing games, backview for horror first person games. i think there's a lot of potential for this to be dug up.
Having the Batman "Detective" mode or the new Tomb Raider's "Survival" mode always active is another possibility, although that might make it too easy since you normally have to stop to use special modes like that. Heck, even a first person viewpoint in a 3rd person game could work if done right.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
By all accounts it is actually very comfortable as is, but day 1 E3 impressions tend to be glowing and all are based on limited time with the controller so it's possible extended time with it will cause hands to cramp up, who knows.

True, the only way to really tell how it feels is to play for an extended period of time, but that's still good news at the moment.

Oh, and I know I'm not the only one that caught the fact that Skyward Sword was, as far as I remember, the ONLY Wii game they talked about today. I didn't forget one, right?
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Yeah, Zelda's the only one I've heard about, which is fine by me really the Wii is like the least interesting thing in the world to me right now.

Quote from Prime Hunter:

Oh another thing about Arkham City is that they tweaked detective mode a bit, it looks like it makes geometry like buildings and such sort of blurred silhouettes, so it's more geared toward finding people than getting to them. Should make keeping detective mode on for half the game less tempting.
Heh, I seem to remember doing that when I played it since it was so useful. Kinda cool in a way that they changed it, but hopefully that means things won't be super difficult to locate. If anything I see the opposite happening if it's harder to use now.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Nah it all looked pretty good, the only thing that's really changed is that navigation in detective modes is just less desirable. Important things were still highlighted and all, but the way to those things was a bit less clear until you turned it off so you could see the details of the surrounding area.

Also pretty crazy that I kinda don't care about a Zelda game, I was at least a little hyped for Skyward Sword last year, but the motion control thing has left me less than thrilled. When I look at screen shots I think it looks cool but then I remember the motion thing and just... *sigh*

"Wii U"...? why couldn't they call it (not Wii 2) Wii²?
i have a feeling that Sony and Microsoft is going comeback with a much more powerful system real quick probably like a month or 2...

Oh hey, we're getting TWO Kirby games in the future, one on Wii and the other on DS. (Kirby Wii and Kirby Mass Attack) Looking at the images of Mass Attack it seems like we control multiple Kirbys at once, which sounds like it could be a blast. Found a couple of other game announcements for the Wii and DS, but not that many.

And from what Nintendo said today, Wii U is supposed to mean something like "We and You" in an attempt to show that they are returning to the main gamer audience with the new system.

Edit: 4 Player Kirby Co-Op??? Am I seeing this right?
All aboard the soul train
Microsoft and Sony can't exactly afford to just come out with a new console in a few months, let alone a couple of years. They're going for a ten-year plan, I figure the 360's staying until at least 2014.

Anyways, I've been reading up on some very likely specs for the Wii--the thing's a beast. IBM's Power7 is likely to be the CPU within the WiiU, which raises a lot of possibilities. Basically meaning, at worst, the WiiU will be around twice as powerful as the PS3. Sounds like Nintendo skipped the seventh generation in terms of strength, and just went straight on to the eighth.
Where did you see that? Granted, I'm finding things out on my own that weren't shown today, but I haven't heard anything about the specs for the Wii U yet. Either way, from what the hands-on impressions are saying the system will at least have as much power as the 360, or close enough to it. Wouldn't surprise me given that the 360 and PS3 have been out a few years there will be something more powerful next time around.
technology far better than the one used for ps3 and x360 is probably too expensive for nintendo. i don't see them going for that

I think IBM confirmed that there was at least some form of that processor running in Wii U, I highly doubt it's some top end version of it though. I wouldn't make many assumptions about the machine's actual capabilities just yet.
defrag in progress
Anyone saw the demonstration of the frostbite 2 enginge? Wow, gotta buy some new hardware for this...
I like turtles.
Unless there's a new Metroid game announced for it, I don't think I'll be going for this one.  I just can't afford to spend money on consoles as often as Nintendo seems to be putting them out.

Nintendo has stuck to the same console schedule as they always have. The only difference is that Sony and Microsoft are going for a ten-year this time around.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I think it's nice to see an extended lifespan.  I would hope it'll enable developers to really get a closer understanding of the tech, and produce some quality stuff.

Reasonable point of view. I am just interested to know what you think. Assuming devs have better hardware the next-gen around, what games do you expect to see? Do you expect to see new concepts or just all the same stuff with better visuals and put overs like that.

If you expect new concepts try to find one that can not be realised on current consoles. You have to find something that requires much ram. That is the only weak point of current gen, other than that there is not much benefit to go up right now.
Wii U is just a DS where one screen is a TV. Expect to see the same old touch screen ideas as we saw when the DS first came about.
