So... a new Halo trilogy, huh? Who didn't see that coming?

Microsoft's conference was alright at first, then they went into a bunch of Kinect stuff for the second half. At least they're starting to support their mainstream games with it though, so I have to give them credit there. Still see the big issue of the Kinect only games all being on-rails and offering no free movement whatsoever, which is a letdown since they could do so much more with it. (Or better yet, have all of the Kinect stuff but still make the player hold a controller or something to get some of the harder to do functions like movement and such.)

Now comes the wait for Sony and Nintendo to see what they have in store.

Microsoft's E3 was... well...

Hopefully Sony's and Nintendo's will be better.

I still think given the right direction the technology could be used to create an amazing gaming experience one day. Up to this point though it isn't being utilized as well as it could be.

Must say, Insomniac's new game Overstrike looks like it could be interesting based on the trailer during the EA conference. Should have their traditional humor at least, which is always good.

I think any kind of Kinect technology would result in the kind of gaming experience I want no part of. I'm a little surprised and also disappointed they're still riding that piece of shit.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Ugh FPSes with Kinect. I hate video games.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Ugh, Ubisoft's really trying to top last year, but it just doesn't work without Joel McHale's insincere praise of their products.
Heh, so on that note, let's see what Sony will talk about this year:

Move
NGP
Uncharted 3
The PSN Outage (?)

I'm hoping there will be some surprises in there as well, but at the moment I can't think of too many other exclusives they have where I know another game is coming and I have interest in playing it. (Still haven't played Uncharted 2 either so hopefully I won't get too many spoilers during this tonight.)

*Crosses fingers for Crash and Spyro reboots headed up by Naughty Dog and Insomniac*

Uncharted promotional things need to stop showing Drake's face because that is a goddamned terrible face. Made worse by the actually really good environments.

Dear NGP Pitch Guy,

Get a smaller jacket next time, you look like a homeless man.

Oh fuck's sake, Golden Abyss guys you're going on stage in front of a bunch of people, fucking dress yourselves properly i.e. find shirts you did not sleep in. Goddamn.
I like turtles.
Okay, no Crash or Spyro.

But then I saw the bit about a new Sly game and just

All is forgiven
I personally loved how Modern Warfare 3 was 10 minutes of the exact same game we've been playing for years and it wasn't even the good parts (ie the spec ops). I remember playing MW and being amazed because it was different from all of the WWII games at the time. Now every other E3 trailer I see feels like a MW spinoff with equivalent graphics and just about as boring gameplay - oh and with some random multiplayer gimmick (most important part).
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Modern Warfare started this whole mess and by god are they going to see it through to the end. It is a strange day when a WWII shooter would seem original, though. We're certainly dangerously close to that day if this is not it.

Also:

Watch this. Everybody watch this. Somebody seriously did this and said "Yes, this is it. This is a good idea, I am comfortable selling this. People will buy it and love it as I do. This is good."

I want someone to promise me they will purchase and play this game with Kinect, record it and themselves playing it. They must also enjoy it unironically. I need this to happen.

One day soon someone is going to try to sell this to me and I am personally insulted that someone would believe this to be a thing that I would buy and enjoy. That there are people that think so little of me personally as to believe I could be convinced to purchase this product. That they think so little of any being with a fully formed brain would consider this a valid investment of their money. It is a travesty.
that is the lamest thing I ever saw.

'something you cannot do with a normal controller' my arse.
Plus, I'd like to see Kinect understand that french accent. thick as polar bear blubber.

Funny, I was thinking yesterday after all of the Modern Day FPS games that seeing something from the Revolutionary War, Civil War, WWI, etc. would be a nice change of pace for once. Pretty sure at least one of those has happened before, but yeah, it would be more original than "Modern Day FPS #23!" or however may they've had since the first Modern Warfare came out.

And I caught that bit yesterday about Ghost Recon. The gun swapping thing where you pick out the individual parts seems cool, or at least the mechanics of it. Not sure if I'd ever use the voice commands there, but it's not that bad if you ask me. Now the actual gameplay from the testing area... not so much. Didn't seem intuitive or natural at all, really.
Yes, potentially voice-mechanics add new depth to the controls. You can do more multitasking in a natural manner like controlling the player in the heat of a battle (let's say with the xbox360-controller) and simultaneously adding voice commands for additional management.  But Kinect as all in one solution simply isn't suitable for games like that by definition.
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
The character you play as should react to what you say, kinda like the speech recognition packages for the PC, so you can just say 'jump', 'prone', or something.  Actually, in saying that, what would happen when it all goes belly up, and you shout 'Fuck that sniper on the roof!' Shocked

Sure, there are many opportunities that Kinect offers, but pretty much everything that is has been used for is nothing but novelty or the obvious. Voice recognition is cool, but does it really offer that much more than a controller can do? Not really. Is it easier? Possibly, but voice recognition is still pretty sketchy. Kinect just really doesn't do it for me.

No, a  controller + voice  offer potentially more than a controller, but only if it is required simultaneously. Customizing weapons only (like in the vid) is performed better with a controller and voice becomes more than obsolete. That is why the content of the video is braindead. But some companies assume there are enough braindead people so they ride their cool-looking trainwreck-show.
Nintendo's new controller is worse than I thought it would be. I honestly expected more motion controls (like a fusion of wand and kinect or something), which I could deal with, but that is the stupidest controller since the Jaguar.

So is anyone else confused about the new Wii U controller? From what I gathered, it's either a new thing for the Wii or else the first part of a new console they didn't show off today, but they were kinda vague on that.

The controller itself has promise, and will certainly help around my house because we often fight over our main TV where the consoles are setup.
it's the new console's controller
