Putting moonwalk on completely screws up certain parts of the game, like the Phantoon fight. I hinestly don't see why the developers even bothered making it.

how does it screw it up?
I'd like to know, too. I've never heard of any Moonwalk-related glitch.
Moonwalk itself would be cool, but the implementation isn't very good, and some parts of the game design are a total mess if you cannot turn around while charging. It's been awhile, but I seem to remember some trouble with Crocmire when moonwalk is 'on'.
Why would you need to turn around against Crocomire? He's less mobile than Kraid.
It slows you way down, and has a crappy "sticky" feel. Very bad for charged shots. I never said it's impossible to beat Crocmire with it, just that it hinders. There are many places in the game where it's highly obnoxious.
If moonwalk were well-implemented, it should logically be a big help against Croc. But it's not.
If you want to slow to an 0.1 pixel crawl while charging when you could be grabbing powerups instead, have fun with that.
Oh, heh, I don't mess around much with moonwalk so I forgot just how slow it was, plus if I fight Crocy at all I have the Plasma Beam by then so I only need to hit him once or twice. I tend to forget how the fight's supposed to work. :-)
I hadn't played the game in a few years and I fired it up last week... I had also forgotten how slow it was... I figured "hey, Croc is always on the right side, perfect excuse to use this pointless feature!"
Actually, I read the controls for Wii-SM the other day (from the 'Home' menu or whatever) and it mentioned shooting while you walked backwards. 'Shooting' as opposed to 'charging'. So I guess the developers originally meant for moonwalk to be used before players got the charge beam, and actually I have to admit that sounds useful (since without charge beam there's no reason to walk around holding in the shoot button); maybe the devs thought the charge beam was reasonably well-hidden. Maybe.
Next time I play I'm going to skip charge beam and try some hardcore moonwalking.
If nothing else, the moonwalk sprites were helpful in making a bad Michael Jackson-style dancing Samus sprite:
Cute sprite. Also, I believe you can shoot continuously while moonwalking with or without charge. Just hold shoot. Also, releasing shoot for just a moment won't break the moonwalk.
I have moon-walk turned on. I'll sometimes use it, but there's not a 'right situation' for it. And it always screws me up during boss fights (Mother Brain phase 2 might be the only exception). So, why do I keep it on?
Quote from mooseproduce:
It is a neat little feature, but again, not necessary.
And I must say, that is the smoothest animation I have ever seen.
