Yes, I'm yet another n00b attempting to get the Spacejump First.
Yes, I'm on the PAL version.
Yes, I know you have to use the creature in the next room over, not the scan visor.
Yes, I've read all the sites about it, and watched the movies.

So basically, what the hell am I not understanding?  What does a normal dodge look like vs a dashjump?  What kind of rumble effect should I get out of the controller if I'm doing it right/wrong?  Where can I practice this move with a clear idea if its working or not?
Thread title:
Dash jumps are very hard to describe.  You have to hit left or right on the analog stick and *tap* B very quickly, you'll hear a "whoosh" sound.  To do a dash jump, IMMEDIATELY after tapping B, you have to release both the analog stick and the L trigger.  If you do this right, you'll go flying.  That move is VERY VERY useful when fighting Meta Ridley, for when he drops bombs on you while he's flying.  Lock onto him and dash jump, all his shots will miss you by a mile.  In the PAL version, you CAN'T dash jump using the scan visor, so if you're trying to get space jump first that way, you can't.  You have to target one of the seedlings on the other side of the door going to the artifact temple, and back up, keeping the target lock until you can jump back onto your ship and dash jump.  I've never successfully done this in the PAL version, but I'm not really into sequence breaking.  The dash jump comes in very handy in some boss battles though, if you need to get out of the way of something FAST.
Wow, I somehow missed that you already knew about having to have a target lock and not the scan visor.  But then, I'm at work, so maybe that's distracting me.  ;)
So, the exact sequence is:

Hold L
Move Right
Press B
Release L and Right simultaneously
Release B

or is it slightly different?
Not quite...you have to tap B very quickly or you won't go into a dash.  So you basically have to tap B very quickly, then release L and direction almost immediately after.  Don't hold B or you won't dash.
okay, I've got the standard dodge sorted.  can't for the life of me figure out how to do the uberl337 one.
Yeah, like I said, it's very very difficult to describe how to do a dash jump.  I can pick up a controller and do it, but it's very difficult to describe.  You basically have to tap and immediately release B, while you release the analog stick and the L trigger, all at the same instant.  It took me forever to get the hang of that too.
at this point, I'd ask someone to send me a savegame file of SJfirst, but I couldn't get it to my cube anyway.

I give up, unless someone's got a better idea.
anyone want to make a house call?
running sequence breaking gag. we could probably have you doing it in ten minutes tops if we were there with you physically helping you.
ten?  Shit, I'd say three.

Did I mention I hate text as a communication medium?
I have the exact smae problem. I can do the dash to the left most of the time (though I think I lack height in either direction) but not to the right where it counts :) Usually when I pull it off sort of to the right I bounce off the edge. Had I gotten like an inch higher I would've made it. Very frustrating...
Keep trying. That's my advice. I've been doing it for months, I still can't make it work more than 1/5 of the times. One tip, though... Don't stand TOO close to the ship's edge. I was doing that at first. I figured, the longer back and the more to the right I'm standing, the further I get... That's false. Watch those videos. Find that exact spot. It's possible from other angles, but that one spot makes it all a lot easier... or should I say... it makes it take less time to manage.
You actually do not need to let go of left or right in order to do a dash jump. I've never really had to think much about what buttons to press/release while dash jumping. Just think of it like this: You're doing a normal dash, as you would on an enemy, except you let go of L right after you push B.

If you're on the very backright of the ship and you let go of L immediately after you push B, you should never miss that dash jump.
Heh, it took me forever to get it, too. I'm still not good but I can usually get it with a few tries now. Just keep trying, you'll get it eventually.
It's not that I'm not quite making the distance, it's that I'm not even doing the move at all.

No progress at all.  Very annoying.  Makes me want to ditch my cube.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...

Erm..

Seriously, tho. If you're anything like me (with the NSTC jump, but still), you'll try a skillion times, make no progress, get frustrated, try again another time, and repeat until one time, you randomly make it, and you weren't even expecting it.
Maybe I should mention that I tend to do things in a very specific rhythm... I lock on, back up to that exact right position (fall of and try again two times), then take a deep breath... I tap B, a fraction of a second later I flick the thumbstick to the right (just flick it, don't hold it), then another fraction of a second later I let go of L.

I'm not sure if that's the most reliable way, but it works for me. Sometimes... It's neat to note that you can jump straight up for relativly long before you have to tilt the stick to dash, though. I think you might actually get a tad higher from doing that, since you're higher up once you start your dash to the right.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Every time i make the Scan Dash, I just stand there for a couple seconds then suddenly realize I made it to the ledge, probably in shock after trying a bajillionskintillion times to make the jump .
