During my 2nd playthrough I suddenly started thinking about it. When you first see Dark Samus you can see (or hear) he/she/it opening a portal to Dark Aether. That explains why the fog disappears. But how did he/she/it do it? Dark energy is required to open portals and DS' weaponry consists of Phazon beams and missiles. Could Phazon beam have opened the portal? Or does DS have hidden weapon systems?

i think the phazon shot opens portals when you use AR to have it so yes, phazon can open portals.

I know this post might be old, but if Phazon opened portals, then how come the Space Pirates didn't use Phazon?

Either they:
-Didn't have the technology to fire bursts of Phazon at the time,
-Found the Dark beam first and kept using it cause it worked, or
-Didn't think to do it at the time

Personally, I'm veering towards the lack of technology, since they only started using actual Phazon weaponry in Corruption. Metroid Prime used Pirates that were mutated and bulked up by the Phazon, and Echoes, as far as I remember, had the pirates using Phazon as an energy source. I could be wrong, however.
I think you are right. The pirates in MP1 were very much bigger than in the second one. They had lesser technology, but still packed quite a punch.
