Yes, there is, incase you fall in the other side. However, the problem from there lies in morphing and bombing quickly enough to get into HBJ.
A silly question from someone who hasn't played this game in years.

Why do you need the wave/spazer/plasma beams?
Is there something you absolutely can't get past without them?
You do not need them.  The 14 items required are:

3 energy tanks - 3
Varia Suit - 4
Gravity Suit - 5
Morph Ball - 6
Bombs - 7
Power Bombs - 8
A total of 4 sets of missiles or Super Missiles - 12
Charge Beam - 13
Ice Beam OR Speed Booster - 14

I think.

3 Energy tanks, presumably to survive the first Brain Beam.
Lots o' missiles to kill the Zebetites and break Brain's case.
No-one's ever actually done 14% Speed; it's just too difficult.
Smokey did a 1:18 14% on zsnes, didn't he? I thought that was very fast until I saw the "quarked" :35 14% run. But really, you can speedrun 14%.
Embarrasing Fact: Power suit made by lowest bidder
Skree meant 14% with speed boots instead of ice beam.
It's not that difficult now; there's a glitch that lets you get a super jump charge in Tourian, just in front of the Zebetites. It'll take a lot of practice, but it probably won't turn out to be much harder than dbjing across the moat in 14% ice. As far as I know, nobody's seriously tried it yet, though, outside of the re-recorded movie first using the glitch.
And the missiles and super missiles are used exclusively to kill Mother Brain. The zebetites are skipped.

No, I mean 14% Speed Booster, as opposed to 14% Ice Beam. It's far more difficult than Fusion 0% to get through from Draygon to MB's room without running, doing a non-spin jump or saving. (and that's even without the problem of getting back through Draygon's part of Maridia without touching the quicksand). People have done 14% Ice, but that's because you don't have to do the whole of Lower Norfair in an odd way.

I'll assume that was a simu-post, as Kej just shut you down majorly.

I am probably missing something obvious… why could you not do Lower Norfair, then Draygon?  You do not pick up any items in Maridia after defeating it, do you?  Also, what is the blue suit needed for in Tourian (since I assume that is the reason you cannot save between Draygon and the end)?

Because you can't get into Lower Norf... the Gravity Get into Lower Norfair thing... yes... You still need to get past the Metroids with the Blue Suit.

Long answer: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/snes/game/588741.html -> Kej's FAQ.

Short answer: With the Blue Suit, you get one free shinespark by crouching (then you lose the suit). You use it to get imbedded in the wall below the first Zebetite, from which postion you can get hit in a postion where you can run through the Zebetite before your invicibility wears off.

That's what the 15th% that was skipped is: a missle tank.
Don't you mean Ice Beam?

If I'm reading it right, no. The Ice beam isn't included in 15%. The Speed Booster is. Although...

Quote from Kej's FAQ:
Technically, you can get many different comboes for 15%, but they all require glitches.

Since the 15% he gives is the glitchless one because using glitches, you'd go for 14%, it could very well be that another, optimal 15% uses Ice Beam. Beats the hell outta me...
