If any of you have seen the April 2004 Game Informer, look at page 113, far right, in the middle.
This tiny picture is obviously from MZM, and that's obviously Kraid, but it looks nothing like the one we see in-game.
He looks a lot like the modern 'fat' Bowser from the Mario games. The features are curved and exaggerated. The tongue, oversized jaw, and childlike claws make him look cute instead of sinister.
I'd just guess they dropped this Kraid at the last second, adding a new sprite and the fog.
You'll notice in the minimap that the area you are fighting him in is a single corridor rather than a large room, and there is some kind of translucent material, maybe lava, that the lower body of Kraid is resting in.
I can't say I'm sorry that he's been replaced, I wish I had a scanner so you could take a better look.
