Apologies if this is common knowledge, and it isn't really a big deal; apologies also for my inability to simply produce a VIDEO of what I mean (in the meantime, suffer through my long-winded and confusing explanation of what you probably already know).
For anyone who's having trouble performing the dash jump while climbing up observatory (while skipping the boost ball, for example), this might save you some time. Especially if you have to practice it for hours, as I did.
You know where the initial scan point to activate the holo-projector is? (Once all the pirates in the room are dead, it's clearly pointed out to you in a short cutscene, so YES, you know.) Once you walk into that area, three viewscreen arrays slowly unfold from the ceiling. OK? Now, while facing the holo-projector, get on the platform to your left (the one you'd usually get on first to hop around the room), turn toward the viewscreens, and jump on the MIDDLE one. You can jump on all of them, but I've found the middle one to be the most friendly in this regard. From there, you can easily jump to the platform you perform the dash jump on. With practice, you can jump across a lot quicker than jumping around the room--sometimes without even stopping.
Like I said, this isn't very useful as a speedrunning tool (since you have to activate the viewscreens first), it's more for people who are practicing the dashjump/boostball-skipping for hours on end, and don't feel like running around the entire room everytime they blow it.
Now that I've said that, all I have to do is kick back, relax, and wait for someone to point out where this has already been mentioned. Thanks!
