I feel like someone could get to the GT with 6-7% items. Combining the norfair Backdoor with the start avoid death glitch, you could get there without the need of extra energy tanks. Think its possible?
Thread title:
The only items that matter toward your completion percentage with regards to an 100+% GT code run are Missiles, Supers, Power Bombs, Reserve Tanks, Energy Tanks, and Screw Attack. Collect as few of those things as you can to maximize your possible percentage. The reason for this is that the game doesn't keep track of the quantity of Gravity Suits or Plasma Beams you have, it just keeps track of whether you have one or not. Similarly, it doesn't keep track of a percentage number and then increment it by 1 every time you see an item box.

GT code gives you 53% right off the bat. The minimum you need to get there (that doesn't matter for extra percents anyway):

Morph Ball
Missile
Bomb
Super Missile (Don't get the ET on the way down to Brinstar!)
Charge Beam (probably want this for Phantoon)
Spazer (nice to have and doesn't count against you)
Varia (probably also want this for Phantoon, plus Norfair stuffs)
High Jump (don't get the extra stuff nearby!)
Speed Booster (make it across the moat)
Wave Beam (2-round Phantoon is nice)
Gravity Suit (grav jump into LN)

At this point, you should have everything you need to get into GT's room. When you use the code, you will be at 53%, and there will be only 3 items that you can't get anymore that you don't already have. Also, you already have 15 items that don't add a percentage point when you get duplicates. So 53 + 100 - 3 - 15 = 135% as the maximum percentage that you can have without space/time on a GT code run.

That's not true. Backdoor lower norfair and using the pause glitch will prevent you from dying. You can get there with 7%.

EDIT:
6% I should say. I'll make an smv later to prove it. Which still jumps it to 144% with what you said.
This isn't optimized almost at all so don't take it literally. I optimized some of it but most I did in real time. Its just to show you can get there. I tried the front door but the pause glitch doesn't work in the torizos hand. To use the pause glitch you have to hit start before you die and hold start for 6 frames or so the instant you can in the menu. Then hit start on the first available frame to avoid death and pause again. I didn't have a lot of time to do tbhos. Open the file like a zip folder.

The point is not that you can get there with less items, it's that only items with multiples and screw attack will count for the extra percentage. If you don't believe me, complete your GT code 100% run and tell me what the percentage is. I've attached a script that may help you.

So basically all beams and upgrades apart from screw attack and missles/ect only count once? I guess that makes sense now that you explained it a bit more clearly.
Actually... So everything in the item list apart from the screw attack and reserves don't count again... That's 13 items. Then there is the 3 items you gained, missles, sm, and PB. That's 16 items all together that you can't count towards your total. So... I don't understand why the total is 135%. With the math, that comes out to 137%. What 2 items am I missing than?
I don't know, perhaps Grapple and X-Ray?
It doesn't matter exactly what items have you collected and what not. It only matters of quantity of ammo and tanks. As for items and beams, the game checks only if you have collected the item or not. So, you can enter cheat code to get 1000 missiles right after landing on Zebes and another one code to make ship lift when you entering it. Enter the ship, watch credits. Result will be 200%.

Missiles, Super Missiles, Power Bombs, Energy Tanks, Reserve Tanks and Screw Attack are the only items you should collect as low as possible.

You could collect no Energy Tanks and no Reserve Tanks and don't get Screw Attack. It doesn't matter for other items. For example, you may not physically collect Spring Ball, but still get 135%, because GT code adds Spring Ball to your inventory. But you still must collect at least 5 Missiles, 5 Super Missiles and 5 Power Bombs to enter GT room.

When you have these items, you're entering GT code and get this:
700 Energy
300 Reserve Energy
100 Missiles
20 Super Missiles
20 Power Bombs
11 Items (one with value 0010 doesn't counts)
5 Beams

Since you have already collected one ammo upgrade of each type, you may collect:
225 Missiles
45 Super Missiles
45 Power Bombs

As for tanks:
1400 Energy
400 Reserve Energy

And Screw Attack

In the end of the game you'll get:
325 Missiles \ 5 = 65%
65 Super Missiles \ 5 = 13%
65 Power Bombs \ 5 = 13%
2100 Energy \ 100 = 21%
700 Reserve Energy \ 100 = 7%
12 Items = 11%
5 Beams = 5%

[\ means integer division, so 2199 energy still gives you 21%]

65 + 13 + 13 + 21 + 7 + 11 + 5 = 135%

So, 135% is maximum in original ROM. You have also item with value 0010 that doesn't counts in percentage. If you make it counts, you'll get 136%, but it will be in modified ROM.

To summarize the above.

Pressing a select button combination while entering the Golden Torizo room sets your items to a large amount (not ADD, SET).

So you can get far above 100% if you aim straight for the GT room.
