I really think M2K2 should host Ventrilo voice chat if the demands on the server (the magnitude of which I really have no clue about) aren't too bad.  I just got a headset for participating in the Vetrilo on another site, and it really is way cool.  This would be a vastly more efficient way of testing things as a group with sequence breaking and so forth.  Hell, five people could be working on some speculative sequence break and vocalizing their thoughts about it in real-time as they work with the game.  Discoveries would happen much more quickly and more often.  Any thoughts on this?

I don't know about "much" more quickly. It also really depends on who's on at the time. I often find the forums empty when I'm on. Even the chat gets dead fairly frequently. I guess it could work, and it could be a good idea, but to me and with the little info I have on it, it doesn't seem much more different from the chatroom except you don't have to type.
Cook of the Sea
Well, perhaps not *much* more quickly, as you say, but consider being able to, while holding a controller and attempting a particularly difficult (and perhaps impossible) stunt, you are able to talk with other people who are also holding a controller and working on the same exact thing you are.

"Hey, try starting from this rock over here"
"the big one"
"No, the one shaped like a pear"
"Oh yeah, got it"
"Anything?"
"Hm...what's the timing of those bombs again?"
"Here, lemme show you" (puts the mike next to the TV Speakers and performs the complicated Bomb-jump-type maneuver again)
"Ah.  But it's still not working?"
"Not quite.  Not for me, anyway."
"Huh...what if we bypassed this section by doing an L-Lock Spring over there, toward that rock of there?"
"Hm..."

etc.  Imagine how streamlined that would be.
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
That's what the IRC channel has, and is, used for.

Well, you must admit, it does get distracting to put your controller down to type. Although it's not so bad with a wireless keyboard that you just hold on your lap and turn around and pick up the controller.
Cook of the Sea
Meh, I mean, it's not like I actually speed-run, since I'm not good enough at it and I have zero time.  In any event, however helpful Ventrilo would be to speedrunners (and listening to the timing of Bomb placement on the fly seems pretty useful to me) it would just a generally cool thing to have for the community.
everybody knows it's true
I think this is a good idea. Mr. Aran Approved!

Ready and willing.
There's a rousing seal of approval.

I think it's a good idea, although I'd never use it, since I don't really speed run.
Cook of the Sea
Heck, I'd use it anyway, since there would almost certainly be multiple channels set up, one being a random chat channel.  I'd love to be able to talk with you guys in audio.
everybody knows it's true
Now that I think of it, how about adding webcam? >_<
red chamber dream
Don't know about anyone else, but I personally wouldn't want my face somewhere chatting away.

with webcams, you can sort of see what's being played, though.
Cook of the Sea
True.  However, if you take everyone on m2k2, and then take everyone with a mike or a headset, think about that percentage.  then think of the percentage of the people who have a webcam.  I mean, it could be that most of the speedrunners are equipped for stuff like this anyway, but the general likelihood is something to consider.
What luck, there's french fry stuck in my beard.
I'd use it, if only to insult your mothers.

Well, I suppose I can just type those insults.  But a neat idea nonetheless.

...

Your mama is the third derivative of a position function!
lmao

I wonder how many people would get that? It takes calculus AND totally random physics!
Cook of the Sea
I'm trying real hard to convince myself that I do get it...
One shall stand, one shall ball.
I'm completely baffled...
I am nowhere near having a webcam, but I do have a mike built into my screen. ... Though, the microphone -> computer wire kinda got lost when my computer was set up. I blame my father.
Personally, I would prefer a SubEthaEdit guide-writing thingy instead.  It would be neat to have a LOT of people working on a guide at once and with speed runners, achieve (almost) perfection.  I would start one, but there are so few Mac users here that I would probably only end up with Nate and myself interested after the first hour.  I also have no starting content for it.

*grumbles about half-completed guide of Prime getting thrown out accidentally last year*
too bad this didn't hit two years ago. :/
If 5 Mac users posted here and said they would work on the guide (and hopefully someone has part of a guide to start), I would open a SubEthaEdit for it, with periodic saves (about every half hour) either on usbcd36.metroid2002.com or on my computer.

this is never going to happen

... teamspeak sucks moron. have a look at ventrilo's bandwidth usage. its MUCH less then teamspeak (especially good for the server) ventilo also has better sound quality then teamspeak.
