What Hejira's saying is the woman has three children. All three are girls. This means that half of them are girls, while the other half are also girls.

This is really a "pseudo–riddle", similar to the one that goes, "I have two coins that add up to thirty cents. One of them is not a nickel. What two coins do I have?"

They're not really riddles imo; they're fairly stupid "trick questions".

The bone is only 5 feet away from the object the rope is attached to.

actually its just a ring. at that time, nobody knows what it is. and that was more of a joke riddle than a serious one that required spoilers.

id still call it a gameboy even if you told me it was a gameboy advanced. besides, the story never mentions that the ring of power even exists... not until the begining of the lotr trilogy. the hobbit is a prequal and not focused on the ring, so its not named as the ring of power. and as such, noone knows that its the one ring. most people dont know it exists anymore, yet. thats as in, if you havent read the series and know nothing about it, starting with this book would tell you nothing about it being the ring. sorry about the rant.

Rant? You want a rant!? Too bad. I'd rather not call it a trilogy, because it was split against Tolkein's will. The Ring is not always called The Ring of Power, sometimes it's called The One Ring, The One Ring to Rule them All, The Great Ring, The Ring of Sauron, etc..
