oh.  I just went WAY too far without a bonfire.  I have to have missed one or two.  No way I'm getting back  :(  The enemies seemed relatively weak until I got to a huge door. I opened the door but didn't go inside.  I went a little further past the door and saw a bunch of guys praying, then some dude sucker punched me from behind for a one-hit kill.  I still had 7 estus!  What a cheap shot.
You'd love Tears of Denial! *cough*

If you got the bonfire in the chapel, that's the only one. As you progress you unlock a bunch of shortcuts.
What's through the big door?  I think I hear something breathing in there.
That's just the beginning of the inside cathedral area. It's pretty big.
I should probably backtrack to some stairs that I saw.  I did end up getting back there pretty quick because I forgot about a ladder I had dropped.
aw hell they went nowhere
damn ...killled by a mimic
Twice!
Clearly Bloodborne was designed to make everyone forget about Mimics so they could put more Mimics than actual chests into this game.
I still haven't used an ember.  What good are they?
It's the new Ephemeral Eye Stone/Humanity/Effigy
I guess I haven't died enough to see my health come down very far.
It's like DeS, it doesn't decrease incrementally. You're basically in Soul Form right now.
I don't remember how all that works in DeS.  I'm old and that was like a year ago.

If I use an ember, what happens besides that sliver of empty space on the right side of my HP bar being filled in?

Sliver of empty space? Your health increaes by at least 30% iirc. It's quite a bit.

Consuming an ember puts you into lord of cinder mode until your next death, which allows you to summon phantoms and makes it possible for you to get invaded.

Mine is a tiny sliver and has never even come close to being 30% of my health.  More like 1-2%. Weird.
btw there is no empty space to how much extra health you gain by consuming an ember. Your whole health bar stretches out when you do so.
oh ok I guess I never even noticed the increase when my ember is restored after boss fight
Actually that was like 5 months ago lol
Just means she should replay DeS
Or rather finish it
So far the main theme of the cathedral area for me is losing large amounts of souls.  I play forever and get a good chunk of souls, die, then die a stupid death right before reclaiming the souls.
Run past the stuff you already know, savequit to reset enemies, and explore from there. Will be easier once you find the shortcuts.
Just found rosarias bed chamber.
