And a these things get bigger you get to cast a wider net and draw in more people with talent than you might have thought existed, more new people start picking up the game, net gets wider etc etc and who even knows where it can go.
back in kip's day .... IIRC prime 2 would run on dolphin, but prime 1 wouldn't, and neither game would play in realtime obviously, I remember checking at the time
but ... it's funny how little new stuff has actually been discovered since kip
the techniques are the same as they ever where, BSJs, dash jumps, ghettos, it's still all the same shit, just applied more effectively

there are a few things like that prime 2 cannonball glitch which we didn't know about, but by and large it's just new applications of old shit
Also people can literally make it their job and hang out with their fans during attempts instead of sitting alone in a room hoping this amazing run is over before the DVD recorder is out of space
yeah that's also true, and make money doing it too :(

I bet the drama is way better now though
I still think I got out of speed running at exactly the right time though, I quit updating SDA just as twitch came along and made it obsolete

by better I mean terrible

No one's gonna out drama rm/rf-ing a forum imo.
and about a year or so before the first AGDQ

was a good time to call it a day I think, it was precisely the time when the community didn't need a big centralised place any more
Someone should stream their old VHS tapes full of failed runs and monetize it

Maybe there's a niche for vintage speedrunning
I actually have a lot of my outtakes still
Club 27 Goals
in that case I'll just record myself playing on an emulator and slap a shitty vhs filter over it

say "vintage speed running in the 80s wow so good"

I liked the first two AGQD
I never did anything with the DVDs, just ripped the finished segments off them and then they went on a spindle as the raw masters, so I will still have a lot of my failures on those discs

They were alright but the SDA chat would be insufferable for the next month or so while all the people who were at the event filled the channel with jokes at the expense the one guy with Asperger's.

Motherfuckers, you were all at a speed running marathon you ain't better than nobody,

I guess I should be thankful that I only stayed for the stream and largely ignored the chat

I actually remember it was close around the MLP days I think,  or at least I lived in that same house.

I ate so much foddam coacoa puffs while watching that stream

Avoiding chat is often the correct move.

The newer marathons definitely suffer from the whole thing getting too big for the people running the show to handle. Also running a lot of boring games. Hell yeah lets watch a guy count steps in FFVII for a thousand years good run.
yeah you're going to run out of worthwhile shit eventually and just have to scrape more and more obscure games
Club 27 Goals
don't forget, ban the runners that are having too much fun!
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Also a lot more runs do out of bounds stuff now which is absolutely shit to watch. Runs that rely heavily on it really shouldn't be there.
