The problem was not having many people around who get Festivus and are willing to just have fun with it. Also not enough people who don't get it and get mad. This hasn't changed in the last year.

oh yeah, last year I came back from my m2k2 hiatus right around when festivus was ending.

Well people around here aren't really stupid, so if a higher than OK # of us don't get it then it's not our fault. The explanation is either lacking or the idea isn't something people like.
Can it be changed to something that more people will understand and/or enjoy?
Maybe the rules are too strict and are taking the fun out of it?

What I meant about the people who don't get was that part of the fun has been people missing the joke and getting mad. Losing that element does hurt.
There was a period where the rules did stiffen up a bit for some reason, probably a product of the board growing and not really knowing what to do with Festivus to account for that. Now it's small again but I think most people here now just weren't part of the really good ones and so don't really care all that much about it.
Also doesn't help that the one of the few old people is me and I'm not funny. :v

Wasn't Festivus supposed to be something from Seinfeld? Seeing as I'd never been interested in the show and have never watched it at all I never found Festivus that appealing when you guys did it every year. Plus the fact that it doesn't really sound like my kind of thing to begin with since I wouldn't know where to start and I generally don't make fun of people randomly. (Especially when I barely know them)
