There have been studies that show that it is counterproductive to make children go to school early in the morning.  Their brains don't actually turn on until around 10 or 11 am, so sending them to class at 6:30 is an absolute waste of time.  This makes alot of sense to me, because I could hardly keep my eyes open the whole time I was in 1-12th grade.

that's a nice story, but it's not true of course. i mean, i and many other students did very well in school as kids.

I guess i'm stupid then because i sucked. I still passed with flying colors but it wasn't easy. :(

I'm actually serious.  The studies were compelling enough to get colorado public schools to move their start ahead by an hour.

fork: safe to say you're the exception.

am i? seems like most kids make it through high school.

i believe my elementary school started at 9 am. i've never heard of any starting at 6:30 (hell, not even high schools), and i've talked to a lot of students all over the country. to suggest that 9, or even 8 or 7 am is too early for kids' brains to "turn on" sounds oddly like '50s propaganda to me (your children are ZOMBIES).

why would kids function any differently relatively early in the day as long as they're well-rested? our circadian rhythms are primarily triggered by sunlight, and it's always light out by 7.

so i guess i'm not saying that the study couldn't have found a lot of really tired kids; i'm just arguing that it's not because of the hour of day. parents should grow some backbones and put their kids to bed earlier if they want them to not be tired in the mornings.
yeah, it's entirely possible to critique the recommendations of the studies while letting the methods and the results stand. i mean i know if i didn't have to go in to school until 10 i'd be up three or four hours later and have the exact same problem as before. not saying it's not right, just saying it's not necessarily right.

fork: your "did very well" triggered me saying that. i doubt very many people "did very well" in high school. i went to one of the top high schools in the country and there was a lot of meh even there.

The problem is, is that if schools shave off time from the morning then they have to add it on to the end of school.  And for people taking AP or IB then it's stressful to finish all the homework when they get back home later.

On the flip side there's always that time to do it in the morning, but then they would probably have to get up early on some of the more homework stressed days which kind of defeats the purpose.

But I have to say that the IB (International Baccalaureate) is pretty ridiculous.  It puts students in rigorous classes in which they learn about the stuff students learn in say England.  IB is very well accepted in Europe and basically the whole other continent.  But in California AP is taken over IB, so those who don't plan on going out of the country have to go into prep school because their "IB credits" count for very little.

i hate to just link you somewhere, but crucial.com has a system scanner you can download and run in the browser. it will tell you exactly how many ram slots you have and how much ram is in each, then give you a list of the best upgrades to get, showing you the amount to put in each slot. you can also just buy the ram right there.

i like to do as little guesswork as possible.

That's actually what I used to make sure what I was planning on getting would be compatible :P Great website

So I just had to take apart a toilet seat and put a new one on for 10$. The problem was that the bolts were completely rusted one, and the seat broke off because it was so old and rusty. Took like 45 mins just to get the bolts off, about an hour total. Bleh :(
Eww I'm totally picturing bolts rusted by years of pee !

Damn I didn't take any pictures and my mom already threw them away, I totally would have gotten a picture of them. It was REALLY gross, because the rust filled up the part where the phillip's screw driver goes into the screw, and when I scraped it out it was WET. It didn't really dawn on me that the only liquid that gets on there is urine/poopy water, but by then I already had it half-way off. I made really good sure to not touch anything but the screw driver and the pliers.
LOL you took pictures of it ?!

I absolutely hated school.  Seriously, I hated every fucking minute of it.  High school, college, everything.  In high school, I used to start crying every morning simply because I was still alive and had to go that shit-hole.  In college, I was so exhausted from working and schooling at the same time that it was a joke.  I hardly learned anything.  It went from attempting to learn to attempting to cram info just to pass tests.

So, school sucks imo.

cool. that's just you though. i actually enjoy school and have enjoyed it. it's something to do. social interaction + learning. they're pretty crucial things for the real world, imo.
Yep.  It's just me.  I'm glad you enjoy school, wish I would have.

Wanted too, but they got thrown away before I had the chance :(

@The school thing, Really the only thing I enjoy out of school right now is getting to hang out with friends. I don't hate school, and I feel it isn't too long. I only go to school now from 10:30 - 3 except for on wednesdays when I get out at 1, so that probably plays a big role on why I don't hate school. What I do hate is the way school is set up, it just seems extremely flawed. I guess the only thing I don't like is that I'm not learning anything that I want to learn. I really do like hanging out with my friends though. Funny thing is, this will be totally switched around once I finish high school. I know I'm going to a different college then all my other friends, so that's really going to be sucky. I'm kinda dreading but looking forward to that final day of highschool. Idk its a depressing bitter sweet IMO.

I think you just hit on one of the reasons that I hated school so much: friends.  I HATED the vast majority of the kids in school.  I only had 2 actual friends in the whole school and seldom had any classes with them, so I spent the whole day surrounded by plastic, warped, assholes whose very presence filled me with rage.  They were all bitches who talked a good game, but when it came down to it they were totally insecure cunts who were petrified about what other people thought of them.  They seriously were so obsessed with wearing the right clothes, listening to the right music, and hanging out with the right people that it overshadowed all concept of morality.  It really depressed me to no end.

That sums up probably every highschool, sadly. It also reminds me of Catcher in the Rye. So far it's been the only good book we've read in English class in highschool.

I enjoyed my time at school, but would add that I think what they currently teach is fooked.  I'm still of the opinion that all children should be drilled on English, Maths, and Science - everything else is an addition.  England is currently facing an epidemic of dumbasses, all of whom are leaving school, but can't actually write basic English, or do simple arithmetic.  Things like spellings and the times / multiplication tables should be memorised (mostly anyway), and spellings and sums should be done in each of the relevant lessons, every time.

Like Poision Envy said, that is true for a lot of highschools it seems. Looking back on what I picked up of the people around me, there was definitely a good percentage of students like that where I was too. Even then, there was also a fair share of students who seemed like they were beyond that nonsense and were actually good people if you took the time to talk to them. But unfortunately, I kinda screwed up those chances because that was back when I did care a little too much about what others thought of me. Not to the point where I was changing myself completely to make them think I was someone I was not, but enough that it made it hard for me to strike up conversations with people I barely knew. (So... more shy than anything else, really.) I didn't really move beyond that until part way into college, and by then I was at the point where I only cared about how my friends felt about me, and again not anywhere near the degree those students in highschool took it.

If people don't like who I am, well... tough luck. I'm not going to change myself just for anyone you know.

But going back to the original part of my post, either I was just lucky and had a highschool with not as many people like that, or else I didn't know some of those good ones enough to see that they too were the insecure type. I'm hoping it's not the latter of those two, because that would definitely be depressing after all of these years of thinking otherwise.

did you ever actually talk to any of those people though? they may be very unlike you but in my experience they can also be fairly entertaining. in a pathetic sort of way of course, but if something is entertaining to me it has value. so i would sometimes hang out with those people just to experience something different.
I was reading online about cults, and was reminded of 'Heavens Gate', the cult that committed suicide years ago because they believed that a spacecraft was following the hale-bopp comet and by committing suicide (leaving their 'vehicles') they could board the craft and prceed to the next highest level of existence.  I went to their website and to my surprise, it is still there and untouched from when they all killed themselves.  It contains their goodbye statements and everything.  It's amazing what people are capable of believing.

On a related note, I read this yesterday, and it's probably to your liking:

Hey guys let's start talking about religion because this place has totally proven to be full of level headed people capable of making that sort of discussion not retarded the last three times!!!

Hey don't look at me!  The Heaven's Gate link was not really put there with intent to start a religious discussion.  I really just wanted to talk about the creepiness of it.

That Heaven Gate thing is reaaaallly messed up. I respect people regardless of their beliefs and stuff, but honestly this is pretty weird.

Anyhow, in Science class today we were talking about microwaves and stuff, and this kid asked the teacher if when things vibrate they get hot. Then he said something else I couldn't hear, and the teacher responded with "I get hot when I have something vibrating in my body". The whole class started laughing, and the teacher said, "Come on guys, get your minds out of the pit". It was really funny, thought I should share it.
Two things that I can remember which made me laugh in class:

Some kid read aloud the name 'Penelope' as PEEN-a-lope

The term 'Flying Buttress'

more like get ur dick out of my pit rite

in my experience, i've had a lot of teachers say stuff like that on purpose. i used to think stuff like that was immature, but if it's anything i could make a urmom joke out of, i'll probably find it funny.
